Relax and you’re finished, Belfast awash with Seville spirit

655

The day after the opening Champions League qualifier of the season can get a bit tasty on the blog but business has been pedestrian since last night’s professional performance by the men in hoops.  If you wanted to be pushy, you could point to a couple of glimpses of goal which fell Cliftonville’s way as a result of Celtic defenders being dragged out of position, but that’s about the measure of an unfamiliar defence at any time.

Congratulations to Georgios Samaras, who scored in Celtic’s first five European away games last season and obliged again yesterday.  A remarkable record for a player who is never employed as a penalty box striker.

It would also be tardy not to congratulate Celtic and Cliftonville supporters on their exemplary behaviour throughout the day.  After recent disturbances in Belfast there were fears that a group of travelling Celtic supporters could find trouble in the city but the casual observer could be forgiven if he thought we were in Seville again.

Maybe Belfast council should invite us over every July to spread a bit of cheer. We do football very well, in all respects.

Neil Lennon can now kick back and relax with a formality of a second and the next round not for another…. 12 days!!  Maybe not.  12 days is not a lot of time to do anything in football, so every day, including match day against Cliftonville, will need to be meticulously planned to ensure we are ready to face an opponent who could well be midseason. Relax, and you’re finished in this business.

  1. Lord but its roasting here. Tried to sit out on deck but twas too hot. Now I’m just sipping my Magners & watching the golf. Life can be hard. Very pleased about how last night went. Supporters enjoyed themselves and all appear to have got home safely. We won with style and yet Cliftonville can hold their heads high, all in all a result all round.

Nice post re australian soccer. From what I heard, Rogic andf the Kiwi/Chilean guy at VfB Stuttgart were head and shoulders above the rest of the A-League last year. Any truth in that?

Also – really interesting that the ‘Rangers road show’ turns up in Oz looking for players (and Stoke too….) I am aware that we have had Rogic, Irvine, and the young keeper (Thomson??) in recent seasons – any idea how hard the ‘Celtic Road Show’ scouts around Australia? (For me it is a very important market, and produces strong fit athletes, who normally out-perform as a national team. Their players usually gravitate to England (an ignorance of foreign cultures perhaps) and so australian players who we pick up can expect to possibly be sold on into the english market – beneficial to us as a Club.

Apologies, I watched and listened again to Neil’s aftermatch comments. Yes, most of last night’s team will NOt be involved on Saturday!

From the Brentford FC website. The Brentford FC Ticket Office is still selling tickets for the BIAS Stand to Celtic fans. No tickets will be sold on the day of the game and sales will end at 4pm tomorrow, Friday July 19.

If correct I think it goes a long way to explaining (to me anyway) why clubs are not kicking up a stushie now. At the time they were suckered in and / or didn’t want to be the one to bring the whole of Scottish football to a crisis point.. That things are now patently worse only explains why there will be a need for even more hatches to be battened down. No-one wants to be part of the blame and no-one want to be the one to start pointing fingers.

    ============================================================

The BIG question is when were the SPL Board members who represent a number of clubs in the League told what was happening. Were they part of the deception of the other SPL clubs?

I assume all SPL clubs knew the score by 21 November 2011 about Rangers and that they had been fed a load of bullsh*t at the meeting of 31 October 2011.

So who exactly knew on 31 October 2011 the details of the plan to keep Rangers in the SPL at all costs that had obviously been put together from the bombshell dropping on 5 October 2011?

Of course when fan integrity kicked into gear we ended-up with the corruption spreading to the SFL to ensure Rangers didn’t drop below SFL1.

I am now beginning to understand the undertaking sought from Rangers in the 5-Way Agreement that neither Rangers nor executives of it would take legal action against footballing suits over their ‘conduct’.

    Rangers AIM Prospectus

12.1.7 5 Way Agreement between SFA, SFL, SPL, RFC 2012 plc and RFCL

RFCL also agreed to release the SFA, SPL and SFL and their directors and officers from all claims connected with their conduct, the registration embargo and the obligations under the 5 Way Agreement. Further, RFCL agreed to procure that its directors and officers will not commence any proceedings

    in this connection.’

No harm in being honest I thought so I was honest with him, I told him they were fit and fast and ever so skilful, some of the most skilful players I’d ever played with for sure, but they didn’t understand street football; they played with their feet and with heads down and thought they were Barcalona and no thought for guts and courage; obviously married to their blatant .

very good post.if you ever have the pleasure of meeting AULDHEID don’t ask about boycots or rules ask him about learning football in THE CALTON back streets and the playground at THE MUNGO DUKE STREET.his mentor was a boy called JOHN MCMAHON.he would have been a BOBBY M or PAUL MCSTAY but he gave it all up to become a priest .died in a car crash in ROME 50 years ago.great guy from a great family and a great place.
