Remarkable singlemindedness of O’Riley

245

The arrival of Matthew Sean O‘Riley (surely, nominative determinism at work), our fifth signing of the window, looks like another incredible bit of business by Celtic.  Like Moussa Dembele, he signed senior forms with Fulham as a 16-year-old.  Whereas Moussa experienced regular first team football in his third season there, Matt found opportunities rare, so declined a three year contract  in 2020 and left the club.

That contract offered the then 19-year-old financial security.  Instead, he went looking for first team football elsewhere and was without a club for six months.  He spent the time training with MK Dons, whom he eventually joined in January last year.

This is a remarkable example of singlemindedness, I cannot recall anyone else in the game going without money in the hope that they better their long-term prospects.  At the time he would have been asked, “What if you get injured?”  It was a risk that had a significant probability of not paying off.

I love this attitude.  Matt will enjoy life at Celtic, but be clear, he is here because we have made him a career enhancing offer – not a career ceiling.  Like so many before him, he will want it all in the EPL one day, which is actually a good thing.

MK Dons fans and EFL analysis rave about his abilities.  He has been a star there and was destined to go higher soon.  Dons confirmed we relieved them of his services due to a buy-out clause (I expect the same is true of this month’s Japanese imports), reportedly £1.5m.

Michael Nicholson is playing a blinder in his first transfer window.

  1. Bada,

Any mention of which party, called the meeting”Constructive”.

Although,in this instance, it would not make a difference.

    Shameful.

  2. Thoughts with CQN’r Mea Culpa

Kevin Clancy added to the list of whom Sevco can’t guarantee safety at Ibrokes ?

Sounds like Willie Collum’s year long ban could be about to be topped if the ‘constructive talks’ ( no laughing at the back ) go Trump FC’s way.

Maybe the refereeing union will back their members and go on strike for harrassment? Then again maybe not.

Agree this bhoy looks the real deal.

Agree this is the sweet spot we should be aiming for given our place in the food chain.

Hats of to Nicholson. Enhancing the squad and doing excellent financial deals that enhance the asset value of the squad and business. Another sweet spot.

See, they don’t have to be mutually exclusive.

  4. Matt O’Riley is getting the headlines today, but in truth the real headliner should be Ange Postecoglou!… 😊 🍀

We all know now, and the SMSM know (and fear), that Ange Postecoglou is a man of integrity, a brilliant man-manager, and has a real eye for a player! 😊 🍀

On watching Matt O’Riley’s welcome-to-Celtic interview, and considering Leigh Griffiths recent exit, it just occurred to me that Ange Postecoglou also has a real eye for a PERSON! 👍😊🍀 Every single player at Celtic now knows that only 100% dedication whilst playing, whilst training, and whilst living their life will give them a chance of making the team! 👍🍀. They also know that with squad rotation they will all get their chances to play…

Ange Postecoglou is setting the highest standards across Celtic, (Club and *family), as a professional and as a person; altruism, decency, honesty, dedication, integrity, class, compassion, consideration, skill, creativity, no-nonsense, hard work, ruthlessness, Common-sense, astuteness, learning, focus, ambition, (and I could go on), are all watch-words that sit easily with our Manager! 👍😊🍀

*We would all do well to be inspired to live up to Ange-Values in our own Celtic lives methinks! 👍😊🍀

I have said this before and I will say it again; we are at the beginning of a new Celtic dawn! 👍😊🍀

    Yours in Celtic,

    TB&F. 😊 🍀

P.S. I thought about adding a compare-and-contrast list of ‘SMSM-Values’ (sleekit, biased, etc.), but thought better of it because it would be far too depressing!… 😂

  5. Any club has the right to compain.

If the Huns feel it is their right then thats their perogative. I would hope that if their is retrospective action for Broony, Clancy their will also be some for McGregor.

If we as a club are intent on sitting at the back of the bus and accepting the same shite we have endured for years as it looks like we are then that is what we get trodden on and cheated.

BRRB – for those comments you are Centre forward for the opposition when we play our 5s game at the shipbank against me Dangerous Dave, Shamrock ya bass :) :)

  6. Managers this season again ,fined and banned to the Stand for complaining about Referees.Just what is the difference?.They are publicly calling out Clancy’s performance.

Funny how both Refs who have been the subject of their wrath are a bit Timmy for their liking. They even slyly hinted about Colums “Background”in their complaint.

This is a disgrace. They should not have been entertained.Just WTF does”Constructive” mean,in this instance.

BBC,SPFL,both bodies they have stabbed in the back, repeatedly, fawning all over them.

Big Jimmy hope you are well. Don’t take up that offer of playing football with D66. The Garngad ruffian plays with spiked studs, knuckle duster and unwashed oxters. Apologies, that was Terry Hurlock.

No worries mate, this Auld TOONHEID/EASTERHOOSE Bhoy has a few auld Fitba tricks up his sleeve.

Does the recent spate of incoming players in any way alter your opinion that Dermot Desmond wants/needs Sevco to win the League?

  11. Chairbhoy (from the last thrread)

So- “National” or state level conflicts do not count as sectarian. Neither do gender struggles, political rivalries or gang wardare. Only the ethno-religious divides of the WoS fits this generic term?? You have offered no other definition of tribalist or binary conflict which mets the definition. How about Sunni and Shia?- that is trans-national. How about Hindu castes? Tutsi- Hutu?

Even then you add Republican (largely) and Unionist (largely) split to this but that is a distinction that is roughly 25 years old. There were depictions of sectarian conflict when both WoS communities were largely Labour Party supporting for the majority of the 20th century- so how does republican vs Unionist manage to make the definition any clearer.

ThebhoywithMcGraininhisside adds the court story that “Billy Boys” was proven to be a sectarian song but singing a sectarian song is not an offence on the statute books (because of the difficulties of definition that you routinely ignore and answer by providing a definition that cannot encompass any situation outwith WoS bigotries) and the charge sheet must have been for BOTP or intimidatory behaviour, if it wasn’t one of the few successful prosecutions under the “mince” (A Sherrif’s own description) OBaF Act which no longer applies.

McGrain adds that a crucial element was the evidence of seeing one section of the community as inferior and subject to threat. Well those conditions apply to the English occupation of Ireland (even when they were co-religionists) and they were applied, even today, in the coverage of the Russia: Ukraine conflict from Geneva when the untrustworthy Russian spokesman claimed the Ukrainian Leader had referred to the Russian minority in Ukraine as “not people but specimens”. Such demeaning language was used by the nazis to the jews (and communists) – was that sectarian? It is used by Trumpian Republicans towards Democrats who are depicted as Paedophiliac NWO types. But political rivalry is not sectarian?

Finally, you state that I do not see sectarian conflict in the WoS (or Ireland) as I am blind to it. Far from it- I see the same things you do- I merely find “sectarianism” an inadequate and poorly defined term to cover it. I accept you have provided a definition of sectarianism so it can be defined you state. I agree that a definition can be attempted but repeated attempts have failed to come up with an adequate, far less, a good definition. It is a fairly worthless term for analysis.

Unless sectarianism can encompass all tribal conflict, in politics, religion, gender and nationalism then it is inadequate to the task. Confining it to sub-national ethno-religious fighting leaves it as too limited to be worthwhile. In fact defining WoS conflict and/or NI Troubles as the only recognised form of Sectarianism, is a form of dehumanising in itself.

If I could invoke the 3 classes style of Cleese. Barker and Corbett on The Frost Report:-

My tribal rivalries are based on genuine ethical disagreements with my revered opponents.

His tribal rivalries, however misguided, are based on deeply held and honourable grounds.

But yours are dehumanising, primitive and unjustifiable examples of Sectarianism!

  12. there was no “£100m investment” for the Ibrox club.

Confetti shares purchased to plug losses, that is not an investment.

    It is a busted flush,

  13. Just had a look at the January transfers in the SPFL. Only two Clubs did not bring in any new players.

    Guess who?

  14. where would Celtic lay its hands on that kind of money in adversity?

comments like that make me wonder if the fella actually knows anything about the owners of celtic plc.

2 billionaires, 2 institutional investors, multi millionaire supporters on speed dial, and an ordinary fanbase that buys shares anytime there was an issue.

If Celtic PLC had a share issue to raise that amount of capital it would be underwritten by one of the owners and over subscribed with investors.

    I am confident of that.

You meanwhile have not got a clue.

Last week it was Mr Luther King Jr Day.

I have a dream that my two children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the type of church they were baptised in or by the primary school they were taught in but by the content of their character.

  20. Just read this from a 2104 Scottish Survey:

” However, relatively few Catholics support Rangers or Protestants Celtic.”

Really? I know loads of Celtic supporters who are not Catholics.

That’s great news. And is increasingly reflected here in the north.

From my perspective racism, sexism, sectarianism, anti-Semitism, islamophobia, homophobia & all the other relevant isms & obias are all examples of the same thing.

That is the misguided belief that you can judge someone & weigh their worth not based on who they are- what they’ve said & done, how they think, their failures, their accomplishments, how they have reacted to both, & the content of their character- but rather based on what they are- that is the box society has put them in. Whether it’s a racial box, a religious box, a gender box, a sexuality box, etc.
