Rundown of possible opponents

1223

Austria Wien have played three league games this season, won one, drew one, lost one.  Scored six conceded eight.  Stuffed 5-1 by Salzburg two weeks ago.  They have only had to play one round of Champions League qualifiers so far, which they won 1-0 on aggregate against the Icelandic champions-cum-day-job-professionals. Send them over, please, Uefa.

Ludogorets Razgrad, from Bulgaria, knocked Dinamo Zagreb out of the Champions League qualifiers last season before going down to Slovan Bratislava in the play-off round.  They’ve won two, lost one, of their three league games this season.  Beat Partizan Belgrade home and away in last round, beat Slovan Bratislava on aggregate in round before that. They also have to play their home game for the next round at an alternate venue to due to a date clash with a concert. Happy to take this lot.

Legia Warsaw, won all three league games this season, scoring 12, conceding one.  Eliminated Molde, after drawing both games, in last round, took care of The New Saints (Wales) home and away in earlier round. Would be a great European tie though not sure if Zbyszek can arrange the result for us.

Maribor, from Slovenia, have won all three league games this season, scored 11, conceded two.  Eliminated APOEL Nicosia after two draws in last round.  APOEL got to the last eight of the Champions League in 2012, so this team are no pushover. Maribor also have the distinction of being the last team to knock Rangers out of Europe. Ever!

Shakhtyor Karaganda, 12 points off the pace after 22 games in Kazakhstan.  Beat Albanians, Korce, in last round and Bate Borisov (who recorded Champions League wins against Bayern Munich and Lille in 2012) in the earlier round.  The travel would be an issue; Karaganda is farther east that eastern Afghanistan. If I can paraphrase an Ibrox legend, define Europe. The fact they are midseason and, like Celtic, they’ve won through two rounds already, makes this a less attractive tie, but they are surely not a Champions League team.

Preferences: Shakhtyor Karaganda are the easiest possible opponents but a trip to Austria or Bulgaria would be best.

Would rather avoid: Legia will be the most difficult draw. Maribor will be a similar challenge as Elfsborg.

Lots more to blog about: last night’s performance, Kelvin, Honest Dave King… maybe later.

  1. My 5 cents worth on James Forrest.

I have thought for the last two or three seasons that the lad was a fine prospect.

However, I am now beginning to think he will remain a fine prospect.

Despite his frequent first team appearances and his CL exposure, I don’t see him reaching the heights of other great Celtic wingers.

He is rather easy to contain when you play are playing a defensive game at CP.

Have your wide left midfielder force him wide and let the full back hold for the ball pushed past. Either that guide him inside to traffic and his left foot will let him, and us down.

I would like to see Celtic inviting the likes of Henrik, Lubo, Sutton and Hartson back to Lennoxtown for a week or so at a time and have them work on specific skills and shortcomings in our current squad, especially the forwards. All our management team are more experienced in defensive duties and our midfielders and forwards would get a real boost from learning from these legends.

    No to mention the fans.

  3. James Forrest is a Wonderful talent that Celtic have nurtured correctly.

Wee Jamesie, if he was put up for sale right now, would easily go for £5M+, that figure could easily double next season and then double again the following season. The Bhoy is a matchwinner but he isn’t the age of the Bo Richter, so he isn’t quite as seasoned as that guy, yet!

The way he played in Udinese says he has Real Balls, unlike so many.

I guess if Jamesie is to become a real Great at Celtic, he has to beat the boo boys first. Nah, it disnae always have to be that way.

Support our most precious players, the ones that come through Our own system, because they are the ones who are unlikely to care about the paychecque and will give their all for the Club.

    I won’t rant on but I will say this….

Aidan gets 2 hours of PE in school a week?

FFS – Even if it means the kids are in an extra hour every day, make sure the kids get at least 2 hours of PE EVERYDAY, I’d suggest 3 AT LEAST and cut away all the academic stuff that most kids have no real interest in at that age.

It is brainwashing…. You have to do this to get that.

Absorbing post. It begs the question. Where are similar plaques in Glasgow?

You are saying kids should get 3 hours of PE every day at school “and cut away all the academic stuff that kids have no interest in at that age”.

Sorry but that is utter nonsense and, to be quite frank, highly irresponsible, especially coming as it does from a parent.

So if kids turn up at school and say they have no interest in Maths, English, Geography, Art etc, your simple answer is to just say, “That’s ok son, just go out and play football instead.”

No wonder the world is in such a mess.

CELTIC could end up playing both their Champions League play-off matches at Parkhead if they draw Bulgarians Ludogorets Razgrad thanks to Pink Floyd.

One of the five teams they could face in today’s draw in Nyon are the Bulgarian dark horses

However, if they are drawn to play their home tie in the second leg they will need to move their game away from Bulgaria.

Bulgaria only has one suitable venue for Champions League matches – the Vasil Levski National Stadium in Sofia.

However, that is being used as the venue for a concert by Pink Floyd founder Roger Waters, who is performing his rock extravaganza concert The Wall Live at the end of the month.

Razgrad president Kiril Domuschiev said: “I never thought that such a thing can stop us from playing in the Champions League at home.

“There’s an option to go and play in Romania, probably at Steaua Bucharest’s stadium. There is another option too – to play both matches away.”
