Scouting and development, from Lanarkshire to Dumfries

804

There’s some fresh enthusiasm in Lanarkshire this morning with the appointment of Englishman Ian Baraclough as Motherwell manager.  Baraclough had a couple of successful years with Sligo Rovers from 2012-14, winning their first title in decades, before things fell apart this year, but his role as a scout for Huddersfield over the last six months is likely to interest Motherwell as much.

Motherwell directors have had a long-term tradition when looking for a manager of saying they want someone ‘plugged into’ the scouting and agent network.  This game is all about the right contacts, you don’t get to acquire a promising Blackburn Rovers reserve (as Motherwell once did), but this particular activity is also very competitive.

The small matter of how to deploy players is, of course, equally important, but if you’re Motherwell, Celtic or Barcelona, that call is a shot in the dark.

I watched newco Rangers for the first time last night, although I ended up watching a lot more Queen of the South than I expected.  The latter, each of them journeymen, were excellent, the former were symptomatic of everything that’s wrong with comfortably well-off footballers.  Newco’s medium-term future, if they have one, will be to spend the next few years building a self-sustaining lower league club, capable of winning promotion and remaining a top-flight football team thereafter.

Get along to Celtic Park early tomorrow, Davie Hay will be signing copies of Caesar & the Assassin in the Superstore.  If you ask him nicely he’s promised to sign your CQN Annual too.  Don’t forget your camera!

Also remember to look out for the Foundation bucketeers as you approach the ground or enter the turnstiles.  My boys and me will be at the North Stand, turnstiles 1-13, say hello if you’re around.

Thanks to everyone who donated to Mary’s Meals yesterday, the response was overwhelming.  Emails went out this morning to winners of the Magners’ tickets.

You can order your CQN Annual here, or get a special Annual-DVD bundle here.

As a special offer, everyone who buys an Annual, or bundle, before Christmas will be entered into a prize draw for a VIP Meal of 4 at a Celtic Park restaurant on a match day. One entry for each Annual bought; pile in.

Delaney’s, my first game against the now defunct club was the dryburgh cup final at the start of 79/80 season, we lost 3 1.

Igc, haha. Definitely a sticky bun trying to be smart. The use of tatty muncher is a dead give away.

Let ‘s hope our bhoys do their jobs tomorrow and if they do, we should win.

Players have to know what their job is on the pitch and make sure they do it.

No trying to walk the ball into the net like we tried to do against the jolly jagsters .

My intro was a winning one. I soon realised why my parents did not let me go to that game, at the final whistle. I learned later that my dad almost lost his life after the 69 final at the hands and boots of Partick huns. I just remembered he had an accident that ended in the Western Infirmary.

  6. My thoughts on who to keep, and who to ship out in next transfer market

Out because they are not good enough

    Berget, Boerrighter,

Out because they need a change of club, we may get a bit of cash or manager doesn’t fancy them

Stokes, Griffiths, Kayal, McGregor, Commons, Zaluska

Out ( on loan) because they will stagnate in the Reserves

    Henderson , Fisher

    Out permanently

    Pukki and Balde.

    In

Back up keeper – wouldn’t fancy Zaluska away from home in Europe

Prestonpans bhoy, the downside to selling souls to tv companies are the ridiculous kick off times which affects the most important part of football, supporters.

We will miss the first half hour tomorrow, my son’s game won’t finish until after 12 30. He’s playing on astroturf so the game will go ahead.

For all you stargazers out there this is a night for you. From about 10.00pm through to a peak at 2.00am there will be any number of meteor showers. Look North from whatever point. Somebody posted a link to Perry Como the other day, apologies for not noting who, but anyways, if you are looking to catch a falling star, this is your big chance!

  9. No use complaining of kick off times if you do nothing about it.

The fans are being taken for mugs, don’t attend and contact Celtic and tell them why.

James Kelly was right television is killing the game.

Delaney’s, partick stickies, in particular, are horrurs even by sticky standards.

There used to be a bit of graffiti, the other side of the bridge from the hayburn, on the first floor of a close saying partick is protestant.

We were playing at firhill the same day the stickies were at hampden in the league cup final. There were four of us walking up renfield street, on our way to firhill. Some middle aged stickies came out a boozer and booted one of my pals just because we were young tims as they questioned our parentage.

with two injury prone RB’s I can’t see Fisher going anywhere and I think we will see more of Henderson as the season goes on.

The rest yeah you’re probably right, Pukki and Guidetti:))))

    Could be a winner..

  12. ClashCitybhoy, You are getting rid of all our strikers except Guidetti & Scepovic. Guidetti is on Loan and may not stay, Scepovic is yet unproven, our record in buying in Strikers is terrible Hooper being the exception.

Stokes & Griffiths may not be uber strikers but I’d not leave either go until there are 3 better proven permanent strikers at the Club.

  13. Iniesta.

    Applause?

I consider it an honour to have seen that gent live and stand to applaud him.

The huddle, sorry, i never worded my post well.

The united game is on tv.

I was trying to make the point early kick offs can affect attendence for all sorts of reasons.

I understand that 1pm kick offs on a sunday are to help far travelling fans get home at a reasonable time.

  15. Craigellachie10 on

The trouble with kick off times is everyone has their own preference. The club had a vote on preferred times on a Sunday and 1pm I think came our on top. TV games are a different story the clubs preference will have limited influence. For my part 1 on Sunday suits ok but I can understand wh for others it doesn’t work. Sympathy specially for those involved in playing or officiating.

Simple but not allowed under the present set up.

Agree on 2 current RBs , but , I still think it would be better to get Fisher guaranteed game time

    CorkCelt.

The reality is that of the 10/12 players on my list for the exit lounge, only 3/4 will actually go, and we may well end up losing some players we don’t want to go.

If it was my decision, I would try to get Gary Hooper back, as I think he would fit in with our 4231 system really well.

  25. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Jamesgang, iniesta and xavi are a dying breed, class on and off the pitch.

I thank my lucky stars that my son and i have both seen xavi and iniesta playing, against scotland and us. Elbows played against xavi and iniesta at hampden and couldn’t get anywhere them to do his usual. Once elbows went off, scotland improved.

Barca no longer seem to be bringing in humble players, suarez and neymar for example. When they signed that fabregas character , as well as changing their style of play to fit him in, his inflated ego seemed to get worse.

My point was more a general one, next time the league TV rights are due don’t sell them to a TV company. Sell our games live online, spread the money around other clubs in the league.

Why would we get big crowds if all games could be watched on your TV or in the pub for a fiver? Saw some of the arsenal game on an 8ft screen. In the warm pub with pals and a nice wee swally and could immediately understand the empty seats at the emirates.

  28. corkcelt

Always been a Stokes supporter, frustrating as he can be at times, and would have liked to have seen Stephen Fletcher play alongside him at Celtic before he headed South. No point bringing in lesser players than our own. Both Stokes and Griffiths finished last season well, as did Commons of course, so enough goals there to win in Scotland. A committed Guidetti would be a step in the right direction.

Well you can do that at the moment without spending a penny, so no difference really.

But you could limit all transmission to outside the UK like they do currently with Celtic TV.
