SFA hesitate as Newco rally troops over Morelos

157

It has been a week since Alfredo Morelos made a murderous gesture while leaving the field at Celtic Park.  In that time, Newco and their media acolytes have done what they could to mitigate his actions.  The SFA have yet to decide what action is appropriate.

The matter is straightforward: throat-slitting gestures by players towards opposition fans are at the serious end of the scale.  It falls short of Eric Cantona’s kick at an opposing fan 25 years ago, but not by much.  Intimations of serious physical violence towards opposition fans is the type of action that can lead to serious crowd safety issues, as well as violence away from the ground.

Police officers warn players about their behaviour in front of opposition fans prior to games.  If a fan was caught on TV making this gesture at a player, he would have been arrested by now and would be facing a lengthy ban from football.

How this issue is dealt with has sporting ramifications.  Morelos is Newco’s top scorer and prized asset (not against Celtic).  If he is banned for 6 – 10 games it will have an impact on Newco’s title bid, there is no point in any of us pretending otherwise.  This is why commentators, who would otherwise be appalled at murderous gestures in our game, have spent a week downplaying the matter.  They cannot pretend otherwise.

Similarly, Celtic fans calling for a ban that reflects the severity of the issue, do so knowing the sporting consequences.  I believe the SFA’s actions are likely to be decided in the next few days.  Whatever they decide – to impose a 10 game, ban or acquiesce to pressure from Newco and issue a rap on the knuckles – will have sporting consequences.

My hope is that fantasy statements on your website are more likely to gain engagement with your own support than the SFA, who like you and me, know fine well that public comments are designed to gain a sporting advantage, not to encourage the acceptance of the throat-slit gesture in our game.  But this is the SFA, so nothing would surprise.

We all know he should be banned and that the ban should be significant.  He was sent off last month for a gesture to Motherwell fans, which resulted in a single game ban and taught him nothing.  His club are prepared to support his behaviour.  There is no learning, no acceptance of what is an acceptable way to conduct yourself.  These are all reasons why the SFA must act appropriately.

The Road to Milan

In April, a group of cyclists will set off from Celtic Park heading for Milan, where they will arrive 50 years on from our ‘other’ European Cup Final.  The route takes in the Southern Uplands, a ferry to the Netherlands, Rotterdam, Brussels, the Champagne region of France, across the Alps and into Milan.

Our own Mouldy67 has organised the event after the incredible success of The Road to Lisbon in 2017.  If you are a cyclist and could be interested in taking part in this incredible event, see here for more details.

One week on and still feeling defeated. Think it’s because having played so poorly in the LCF – yet winning, we then played even worse in the League game – but this time we got what we deserved – nothing. So in between those 2 games it looks very much like zero lessons were learned. For me that’s the real concern, not learning anything at all from the LCF. Not learning from your mistakes and then repeating them. We all know where that road leads. The confidence I had in Neil, plus the other 2 guys, has definitely taken a large dunt.

Yes indeed – looked a player. However I don’t think our ‘face fits’ at Liverpool.

I know business is business, and football is football, but I believe there is real investment in Gerrard’s Ibrox progress by Liverpool. The Kent transfer clinched it for me, and of course the fact that they allowed their entire youth academy backroom staff to relocate en masse to Ibrox – mind you watching the game today it seems they are not being missed.

The Rangers had looked incapable of helping themselves for over six years, who’d have thought that Liverpool would come to their rescue – funny old world.

PhilBhoy – definitely not giving in – just finding it difficult to get over the very recent poor performance of our management team. The players I can forgive much more easily, but if Neil and co dont up their game in 2020 we could be in a bit of bother.

    Happy New Year btw.

Your confidence in Neil or as David66 refers to him … the Messiah (a wee joke) in regards to Netflix watching

December was a very busy month for the champions as well as our challengers (although not as busy) … the Sevs winning the league cup would have brought euphoria to their legions .. they didn’t … “if” they lost on the 29th their season would have been gone (in my opinion) … Celtic have achieved so much in 2019… do not let our first home domestic defeat on the last day of the 2019 domestic season cloud your judgement … we are in a very good place … fact 🍀 :-)

  9. GFTB,

Yeah I had heard these rumours about Shved in training.

If he doesn’t train well or whatever, what does he do every day ?

Do we have a plan for him or does it just go down as another lack of homework signing.

I think we are all still feeling numb after last Sunday’s defeat, coming hard on the heels of Hampden, I know I am.

After twenty-minutes it became apparent that again we were going to be dominated in midfield and not allowed to play our normal game.

Eddy was making a difference but sadly not enough to change the flow of the game.

The stats say we were not completely neutered, but it didn’t feel that way.

I was disappointed with the tactics we used – truth be told Gerrard & co repeated the LCF dose, only this time they got what they deserved.

So like you, I was a bit disappointed in Neil & his coaches – but more so in certain players who didn’t fancy it.

    Billy Sharp? Glenn Murray?

It doesn’t seem that long ago that we were sneering at the huns for signing oap’s Davis and Defoe.

  24. If Alfredo lands at Glasgow airport and the stories about the tunnel assault are true OR if the SFA do even half of their job right and give him a 3 to 5 game ban then he will never get to leave sevco unless he runs down his contract OR goes in the huff.

Traynor, who is the de-facto leader has made a massive erse re his valuation.

If they had kept their mouth shut about £11m bids being rejected then a club like Norwich would have had a go at 3 or 4 million…. All they clubs are now out of the game.

Clubs who can afford 10m + do NOT have teams that can give guys like Alfredo a game to see how he gets on..

    Sam Cosgrove’s stats are better

Anyway, the fact that we are being linked with 27 yolds and 35 yolds pleases me fwiw.

Not saying Murray or Sharp are the answer but we don’t need to find the next Messi- we need players ffor a 4 month war to win the league.

If El Hadeem was playing at full back and Jas McLean n Aiden McGeady were in midfield then I believe we would have beaten the new club last week.

    Nally81,

I’m with johnjames on moreloss transfer, he does not qualify for a visa to play ing England.

  26. TBH – I thought the Ryan Kent gun to the head gesture was far worse.

One would imagine he knew or somebody told him the significance of that.

Plus, he’s supposed to be happy after scoring whereas Morelos would have been severely hacked off.

  27. I agree with Nally, this is not time for projects, we need guys who are ready to go to war and get us over the 9 in a row line. I wouldn’t take too much notice of who we are being linked with. 9 times out of 10 those linked players never materialise. Likewise I don’t care what age they are as long as they can do a job over the next 4 or 5 months.

Re the Colombian gurrier , there was a strong rumour of an incident in the tunnel and that Police Scotland had requested the Clubs to keep it under wraps.

Must admit I find it hard to believe but if it did happen, I reckon the punk won’t be back in Scotland.

The Huns need the money, could be their perfect excuse for cashing in.

Having said all that I repeat I’m of the opinion that the original story is bull.

  28. Not sure where the information is coming from regarding Slippy G and his backroom staff moving from Liverpool. I read that he was elbowed out as U-18 coach because he failed to meet his performance targets. As for Kent and a favourable deal, who else was linked with him. The guff about last day of the window signing to get one over Celtic is just that , guff.

The idea that Slippy is being groomed for Liverpool and England, is for the fairies.

    HH

  29. Both threatening/inciting gestures says all you need to know about the Mindset in the Zombie club.

They could have taken a better path, alas they are going down the same wan again.

FWIW – If it was a choice between a EL win or 9/10 in a row. EL for me.

  30. Canamalar. Might be talking through my hat but did I read that Scotland are likely to have 2 Champion League slots next year.

Having said that my priority this year is the 9 in a row.

  31. There is no Ibrox: Liverpool Alliance. It’s another made-up concept to terrify us about our impending doom.

The only player on loan from Liverpool is Sheyi Ojo, who has been loaned out previously to Wigan, Wolves and Fulham. His most recent loan was to Reims in 2018 and he ended up playing for Reims II before landing at Ibrox, where he has 10 league appearances and 1 goal.

They managed to sell Kent to them for circa £7m, after he had been loaned to Coventry, Barnsley, Freiburg and Bristol City. Liverpool were delighted to get the money for him.

The only other ex- Pool player there is Jon Flanagan, who was released from his Liverpool contract in 2018 after pleading guilty to assaulting his girlfriend. He had shown some early promise which was unfulfilled and he was struggling on loan at Burnley and Bolton. The Huns are welcome to him.

On the coaching front , Steven Gerrard had 8 months as Liverpool under-18 coach and 7 months with the under 19’s.

Gary McAllister had 2 years as player manager with Coventry and was out of the game for 4 years before getting a 11 month stint with Leeds. He joined the coaching staff at Boro for a few months before becoming Asst. Manager at Villa, where he had a 2 months spell as caretaker but was overlooked for the permanent appointment as they preferred Alex McLeish. He had another 4 years out of the game before joing the Liverpool coaching staff in 2015 but left the position after 3 months, in October 2015. 3 more years out of work followed before he joined Gerrard at Ibrox. He is hardly a much sought-after coach.

Michael Beale had 4 years as coach and manager of Liverpool Youth before becoming Asst. Manager of Sao Paolo in Brazil for 9 months and returning to Liverpool and Sevco. He, at least, has had a continuous record of employment. How much influence or ability he has would have to be answered by someone who knows their Youth set-up better than I do.

Tom Culshaw was with the Liverpool U-18s where he was Gerard’s Assistant.

Jordan Millsom was th e Head of Fitness for the u-18s at Liverpool- now at Ibrox.

Their goalie coach is home grown- Colin Stewart. he has never been to Liverpool

Currently, Liverpool have a Dutch and a Belgian Asst, coach under Klopp. They have a Portuguese Elite Development coach, a Ducth goalie coach, an English asst. goalie coach, a Belgian head of Fitness, an English Academy Director and an English Under 23 coach.

All of the above occupy more senior positions in the liverpool set up than were achieved by Stevie G in his time there. In addition they have 3 English men acting as Director of Scouting, Chief Scout and Director of Technical Performance.

Outside their first tem set-up they list 23 other as follows (the first few occupy posts that rivalled Gerrard’s position at Liverpool):-

    Academy director: Alex Inglethorpe

Head of Academy business: Andrew Powlesland

Head of Academy football operations: Nick Marshall

Head of education and welfare: Phil Roscoe

Head of fitness & U23s fitness coach: Andy O’Boyle

Head Academy physiotherapist & U23s head physio: Andy Renshaw

    U23s manager: Neil Critchley

    U23s coach: Mike Garrity

    U23s goalkeeping coach: Mark Morris

Head of development analysis: Tim Jenkins

    U18s manager: Barry Lewtas

    U18s Academy physio: Liam Kershaw

    U18s goalkeeping coach: Neil Edwards

    Sports therapist: Joe Lewis

Assistant Academy sports scientist: Oliver Morgan

Head of local recruitment: Ian Barrigan

    U18s performance analyst: Scott Mason

    U15-U16s performance analyst: Brad Wall

    U10-U12 Lead coach: Michael Yates

    U6-U9 Lead coach: Anthony Ryan
