Shocking result but expected performance

1103

I’m not going to say I saw this coming, I didn’t see defeat, but when I wrote a couple of days ago that you and I have seen a lot more games like Celtic’s away to Lincoln Red Imps than Brendan Rodgers, and about European football in July, I knew this one was never going to play out in a triumphant manner.

On the first day he was appointed I asked one of you to compile Brendan an Efe highlights video – I assume we were all busy. God love Efe, he’s a fine man by all accounts, but he’s three years into a slump which is not going to end at Celtic. Brendan must now be aware. It’s no longer Efe’s fault if he costs us again.

I also made the point previewing this game that we can’t expect a squad comprising only one addition to last season’s group to perform remarkably different in qualification than a year ago. In this sense, Celtic performed as expected, this one had all the hallmarks of our recent Icelandic ventures.

The manager may not be embarrassed at the result (I suspect he might sound different privately) but many supporters are. Gibraltar has a population similar to Bellshill, but without the football heritage and support mechanism. Would defeat to Bellshill Athletic be embarrassing? You bet. Yesterday’s result was too.

We are woefully slow in build-up and have only one player in the squad who can create the 7 or 8 chances per game needed to get a result, and he’s 33 next month and currently injured.

We remain strong favourites to qualify for the next round but there is an enormous amount of work to be done in the next month. This is not a Champions League squad.

  1. SunnyJim, Superb post. We need more of that type of analysis on here & less of the over the top hysterical hormonal reactions.

  2. Evening all.

Just received my new season ticket. My question: why? I was told by the TO that old one would be automatically updated. I wonder if it has been and I now have 2 tickets, albeit for the same seat.

  3. Good post Paul. The reaction amongst Celtic fans and the media is immature and dramatic. Absolutely no consideration of the situation Brendan took on. He is still assessing the players. He would have learned a lot from the lack of leadership and accountability in a competitive game for the first time. The question remains, is he mr.nice guy or will he be ruthless and ring in the changes with the help of the dithering Lawell.

PS why does it always take celtic so long to close deals, ? the team is on its knees

Let’s face it there are just some Celtic fans ,who no matter how bad things get ,live in denial.”

…..and there are many others whose opinions are shaped by the most recent result ( and I don`t include you in that group,TT).

Right or wrong I think most fans criticising are looking at the bigger picture in what is a crucial season, we must reach the UCL group stages this year, looking at last night efforts I believe there is cause for concern.

It’s not what Brendan says that’s important it’s what he does.

Play-re Colin Murrays honourable decision to resign from Talksport,as it has been taken over by a Murdoch owned company,CM is Very likeable, from the dark side but never slow to talk Celtic up,might find it hard to get a good gig,bad mouthed BBC when he could…

I fear Scott Brown, could get the same treatment as BR gave to Gary Monk at Swansea….

tfft – I was logged on as ‘A Right Hames of it ‘ yesterday who I haven’t been for 10 years .

Anybody else feeling queasy coming up to 24 hours since we we were beaten by the gibratlar gimps !

Sweet mother, that was another new low. Ronny must have been tittering away wherever he is – managing a youth team for a small norvegian team I’d imagine.

money , we get the money, we get better, we don’t the money, we don’t get better.

We know we don’t have the answers without money, we just get shi* players. The football world is affected by the new financial world and seems to be changing yearly.

Agree with much of your analysis on last night’s game except for your comment on Tom Rogic. I watched him carefully from kick off and his first ten touches resulted in him giving the ball to the opposition…that ultimately ensured his substitution I’m afraid.

The team is crying out for a Sissoko type, someone who picks the ball up and makes powerful runs directly for the opposition goal as was demonstrated in the European Nations Cup final. Yes that type of play may result in losing possession but it can create chances for others unlike the crab-like play witnessed last night which allowed the opposition type to re-group and created very little.

It’s a good thing, Celtic will thrash them next week and the first leg will go down in folklore, but still meaningless as a stand alone game.

If Celtic were serious about the CL then Ronny would have been gone long before he was.

If something else happens, BR would be gone before he started.

  11. I don’t feel a bit queasy, if we won 5 nil last night next Wed. would be irrelevant, I’m really looking forward to it now.

By the way if I wanted to follow a really great football team, I’d have followed Barcelona.

I just want to follow the famous Glasgow Celtic. Yes I want us to be as good as we possibly can but even when we are not great or even when we are damn awful, I still get my kicks out of following Celtic.

When I spoke to Oltim67 one week back he told me that story :-)

Anyway, very sad to read about yesterday on Polish websites.

There are plenty living Celtic legends who I would take before anyone from current Celtic squad if I needed to go play in Europe again. Big turn was the game against Shakhter Karagandy 0-2.

Word of advice about wifi here in the US- use the free service offered by coffee shops. By far the most reliable. Starbucks, Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, and all the independent one’s of which there are loads everywhere.

Some shite on the blog today. A lot of mouths will surely need washing out in the morning.

I am sorry to say time catches up with us all and for me it has caught up with Scott Brown he has been a good servant to Celtic but he has lost a yard of his pace and he tries to overcome that by being more aggressive on a one to one basis. He no longer encourages his team mates or drive them on.He will still have a few seasons left in him but at a lower level than Celtic the sooner Brendan realises that and brings in a new player with Captains potential the sooner we will turn the corner to a better future. H.H.
