Show Your Hand

1036

When I grew up everyone knew about Thalidomide, a drug given to prevent morning sickness in expectant mothers, which caused severe limb abnormalities in the child.  The drug was used for only a short period, so those suffering from the condition are all of a certain age.

The condition is both very recognisable and rare, so there is a good chance you will have noticed Gerry Cleary (above) at a Celtic game at some point.  When I was a boy I saw him at Love St and heard about the scandal later that night from my (animated) mother. There was a fresh news story only yesterday, detailing the history of one uncompensated victim.

Gerry is part of a campaign by Thalidomide sufferers to raise awareness of the condition and put pressure on the drug’s developer, Chemie Grunenthal, to compensate UK victims.  On this occasion, you are not being asked to put your hands in your pockets, you’re being asked to register your support of the Show Your Hand campaign.

Gerry explains the campaign below:

“My name is Gerry Cleary, I am a 51 year old Celtic supporter from East Kilbride who was born with a condition called Thalidomide caused by a so called wonder drug manufactured by a German pharmaceutical company, Chemie Grunenthal.

“There is currently a major awareness campaign underway to put pressure on this company to face up to their responsibilities, finally apologise and compensate all thalidomers affected by their actions over 50 years ago.

“I know being a hoops fan all my life and following the team all over Europe our club is open to all and our fans second to none, and all I ask is the Celtic family to show their support by logging on to our campaign website www.showyourhand.org which enables you to register your support.  It also details the history of the biggest pharmaceutical disaster in modern times and is both enlightening and informative.

“I look forward to your support.

Hail Hail !!!”

I know we can’t all afford to participate in the many needy causes we feature regularly here but we can all support this campaign, as can the club, I am sure.

  1. Delaneys Dunky…….don’t worry pal, I’ve no even

got a bet on due to the fact there is nothing in my

    account……on a real losing streak.

  2. I understand that Artur Boruc is only on the bench tonight. A bit surprised given his early season form although I wil openly admit I know hee-haw about the Polish #1.

Butterflies really kicking in now. Well it’s not everyday that I stake a whole 20 shillings on a double bet ;-)

    Thanks for your comment.

Well, today is another day that both the US government and Ally & Co are shutdown.

There are no games at Ipox in October, so no money coming in.

Today, Ally and his pals have shed 40 000 pounds (sterling not fat).

    A pittance for some, perhaps.

But that makes 6000 000 since premier Octobre time.

When they say that, come premier Avril time, they will have one million in the bank…

… Ally is walking a tightrope wi’ no’ much o’ a safety net.

Always assuming that the oft’ quoted £OneMillion is not just said to calm the ol’ nerves…

This is something I’ve not seen discussed anywhere, but I get the impression that the point of their continued delays for the date of their AGM, is to allow the SPIVs the chnace to cash their 1p Caley vaouchers for 50p cash (after a lockdown period expires?).

Whatever… I’m sure Ray Davies was a Tim:

    No money coming in,

The rent collectors knocking, trying to get in.

    We are strictly second class,

    We don’t understand,

Why we should be on dead end street.

People are living on dead end street.

Gonna die on dead end street.

    Dead end street (yeah)

I dont know much about the Mc Cann case but one thing struck me was if the complex had baby sitting facilities how did the abductor know who availed of it and who didnt? Many unanswered questions

    19:18 on 15 October, 2013

With regard to last nights discussions about the McCanns…….I’ve holidayed in the complex they were staying…..and something that never seems to get mentioned is the fact that the complex supply’s a baby sitting service…….it might cost…ah don’t know….€20 an hour……so for the sake of €40 they lost their baby…….

    —-

Read Kate McCanns book and it was stated that the babysitting service was normally provided by the complex but because of the time of the year was not available.

It was also stated the service which was offered at peak times was a 30 minute bedroom check on the kids by complex staff. When the McCanns found out it was not available they just implemented their own babysitting service based on what the complex normally offered I.e. 30 minute room checks.

    18:13 on 15 October, 2013,

I’m in the same boat, think I bought them too late to receive an invite.

My main reason for buying them was to assist Canamalar to achieve his figure. I have the utmost respect for his pursuit for some form of action from the board…hat doffed to Canamalar. HH

  9. I hope and pray no Celtic supporter shows any interest whatever in Whyte’s nonsensical “gala” event. If he’s reading on here, Derek, thon team fae Govan died. They were liquidated and a newco were allowed to enter the bottom tier of Scottish football. Oldco were not banished. They DIED. Anyone who “represents” Celtic at this nonsense, like Peter Grant and Andy Walker should not be allowed anywhere near Celtic Park in any official capacity ever again. Makes me sick to my stomach that some will go along with the big lie to make a few bob.

  10. Good evening Ghuys:

I will be brief tonight, been a long day on the go from 06:15 and not long home, Preston and back.

Linda and the kids are going away for a few days but will be back in plenty of time for the Ajax game and I will pop over with their tickets.

I have been in touch with Paul67 who in turn has spoken with the CQN Fund raising Committee. Once all monies received and cheques cleared I will transfer the amount to them with a letter outlining where and when the donations were made and they will write a cheque, which will be presented/sent to the ‘Mini St. John Doyle’ fund.

To date you have collected £1,373.80, once the tickets and floral tribute were taken off we presently have the amazing total of £1,119.30 that will be be donated.

If you have not already done so and wish to make a donation please contact me; these can be made up to the Ajax game on 22nd Oct:
