When I grew up everyone knew about Thalidomide, a drug given to prevent morning sickness in expectant mothers, which caused severe limb abnormalities in the child. The drug was used for only a short period, so those suffering from the condition are all of a certain age.
The condition is both very recognisable and rare, so there is a good chance you will have noticed Gerry Cleary (above) at a Celtic game at some point. When I was a boy I saw him at Love St and heard about the scandal later that night from my (animated) mother. There was a fresh news story only yesterday, detailing the history of one uncompensated victim.
Gerry is part of a campaign by Thalidomide sufferers to raise awareness of the condition and put pressure on the drug’s developer, Chemie Grunenthal, to compensate UK victims. On this occasion, you are not being asked to put your hands in your pockets, you’re being asked to register your support of the Show Your Hand campaign.
Gerry explains the campaign below:
“My name is Gerry Cleary, I am a 51 year old Celtic supporter from East Kilbride who was born with a condition called Thalidomide caused by a so called wonder drug manufactured by a German pharmaceutical company, Chemie Grunenthal.
“There is currently a major awareness campaign underway to put pressure on this company to face up to their responsibilities, finally apologise and compensate all thalidomers affected by their actions over 50 years ago.
“I know being a hoops fan all my life and following the team all over Europe our club is open to all and our fans second to none, and all I ask is the Celtic family to show their support by logging on to our campaign website www.showyourhand.org which enables you to register your support. It also details the history of the biggest pharmaceutical disaster in modern times and is both enlightening and informative.
“I look forward to your support.

I know we can’t all afford to participate in the many needy causes we feature regularly here but we can all support this campaign, as can the club, I am sure.

I doubt CANAMALAR is being hung out to dry.
I expect that he will carry the show of hands,with majority support of those shareholders in attendance.
The simple fact is he does not need to win the vote-which he won’t-as it is how the club react to the question which is his goal.
And to be honest,that part worries me.
Do they see Celtic the way we,the fans,do?
Or do they see Celtic as one half of the Old Firm(spit)
I think we will shortly find out,and it may not be pretty.

I have still contributed to charities meantime but none that have Celtic associated with them.
Our charitable bent the present plc reconcile with good PR. Mannah from heaven and a defacto release valve when the money grabbing accusations present hemselves.
It was proven THIS WEEK absolutely that we are indeed the Old Firm … I am owed a few apologies ….. not that I will be holding my breath … and until we are Non Old Firm not then I cant contribute to them
I have also decided not to watch any domestic competition because its not a competition.
But this plc are well aware of this. DD will be delighted that all that will be left in the support are the glory hunters. Unambitious , Submissive, Neutered , Sterile and obedient as long as we are better than the huns

Gerry Cleary is my mate, and has been for 30 years.
I first met him playing 5-a-side football which he continued to play (in strong company) until he was 40 years of age. He is, as Jobo Balde said, a brilliant chanter but he is also a fantastic father, a wonderful husband and a true inspiration to anyone who knows him or has had the pleasure of his company.
Although Gerry’s attitude in life and his determination to have nothing other than equals throughout it, is amazing, no one can argue that the quality of his life has not been diminished by the use of this drug. I know for certain he would still be kicking a ball with the rest of us if his condition did not prevent him and that there are other aspects of his life that are restricted as a result, so it is time that apologies were offered and compensation is given to the families affected by this.
