When I grew up everyone knew about Thalidomide, a drug given to prevent morning sickness in expectant mothers, which caused severe limb abnormalities in the child. The drug was used for only a short period, so those suffering from the condition are all of a certain age.
The condition is both very recognisable and rare, so there is a good chance you will have noticed Gerry Cleary (above) at a Celtic game at some point. When I was a boy I saw him at Love St and heard about the scandal later that night from my (animated) mother. There was a fresh news story only yesterday, detailing the history of one uncompensated victim.
Gerry is part of a campaign by Thalidomide sufferers to raise awareness of the condition and put pressure on the drug’s developer, Chemie Grunenthal, to compensate UK victims. On this occasion, you are not being asked to put your hands in your pockets, you’re being asked to register your support of the Show Your Hand campaign.
Gerry explains the campaign below:
“My name is Gerry Cleary, I am a 51 year old Celtic supporter from East Kilbride who was born with a condition called Thalidomide caused by a so called wonder drug manufactured by a German pharmaceutical company, Chemie Grunenthal.
“There is currently a major awareness campaign underway to put pressure on this company to face up to their responsibilities, finally apologise and compensate all thalidomers affected by their actions over 50 years ago.
“I know being a hoops fan all my life and following the team all over Europe our club is open to all and our fans second to none, and all I ask is the Celtic family to show their support by logging on to our campaign website www.showyourhand.org which enables you to register your support. It also details the history of the biggest pharmaceutical disaster in modern times and is both enlightening and informative.
“I look forward to your support.
Hail Hail !!!”
I know we can’t all afford to participate in the many needy causes we feature regularly here but we can all support this campaign, as can the club, I am sure.

Enjoy
greendreamz
thot you had a riddle goin there.
the longest serving after mr malley would be 2nd longest
the 2nd longest after mr malley would be the 3rd longest
that was my logic, however flawed
Macjay/ GCT,
My old dear taught us strong socialist values.
Was pretty much common sense to me.
But in this capitalist utopia you both live in, thank feck for John Candy eh?
Cos you’d both be the first to take any of us off the street and clean your bannisters, kind souls that you are.

Not so long ago they had Fergus Mc Cann assimilated with Saddam
the bannisters the easy part it the ballustrade thats the killer :o)
Thindimebhoy
I don’t need reminded of that.
Have you read back?
This is about Celtic Supporters asking legitimate questions of the board, and the responses hence forth.
Nothing to do with the the meeja, although that is what some posters are trying to reduce it to.
Disappointed to see you in that role as well, intentional or not.
FFM – I’m the only conspiracy theorist in the village)
Why should I read back
You asked for negative stories and I gave you an example
Thindimebhoy
No, you didn’t.
You did NOT give an example of a negative story posted today on CQN about the Celtic Board.
I suggest you sort this out now with a decent response, or forever have your contributions in question.
FFM – I’m the only conspiracy theorist in the village)
I was talking about the smsm
As for the Celtic board are they not doing a fine job while the mob implodes.
I guess you disagree
Thindimebhoy
“I was talking about the smsm”
You jumped in on something and then qualify it with that?? The “smsm”??
“As for the Celtic board are they not doing a fine job while the mob implodes.
I guess you disagree”
Where did I say the Celtic Board weren’t doing a fine job? Why do you “guess” you should disagree??
Mibbes you aren’t doing too great a job of contributing anything to the crucial debate of the last two days??
Celtic supporter????
If ever I was middle of the road, I’m right in the mine-shafting camp now.
The list of whys is endless.
The disgusting way diversion tactics have been conducted here has convinced me.
Along with the treatment of Celtic Supporters asking questions.
And Celtic Supporters being arrested with nothing but the contempt of the Celtic Board to look to for help.
Disgusted and appaulled.
This is not the Celtic I want for the future.

But what is The Celtic bar a football club in the grand scheme of things…?
thindimebhoy
not for a minute am i defending ffm, he doesn’t need me to but if you think celtic are only a football club you are in the wrong place.
celtic are a way of life to some an identity to others a movement of people who share the same goals.

If that’s all you see CFC as, then that’s your choice.
Good luck with the share issues.
Given that mines and many others recognise the work our forefathers put in to make this a club for all, regardless of income, then, aye, the ole income-dependents might get a tad worried and offended.
To answer your oddly predictable answer question – we are more than a football club. And as soon as we allow others to limit us to being “just a football club”, then we have lost every breath of spirit, every bone of our being, to those that would have us die a death of a thousand cuts.
But we won’t.
And this is why some of us demand answers from the current board.
I usually start my late night reading from the last page and work my way back.
I’ll give it a miss tonight and go back to the NLDS where the Cardinals are leading the (TAX?) Dodgers 4-2 going into the 9th.
Quite appropriate?

I made one point.Hypocrisy.
Nothing to do with socialism or bannisters.
I can`t support an organisation run by people for whom I have contempt.
Like Rangers.
macjay1
Your claim of an argument for “hypocrisy” was one the poorest arguments/ claim I’ve ever read you make here.
And it’s disingenuous of you to claim that you were trying to out hypocrisy.
Just when things are depressing, then you and GCT came along and made it worse.
Utterly disappointed in the both of you.
Particulary GCT – points made were moronic Tom.
They often are, but today was special.

Celtic are more than a football club I know that for various reasons some personal but more can sometimes mean less in the corridors of power when it comes to change.

No you didn’t.
When we’re at the stage that we are lying to each other, it’s surely time for the board to move aside?
Only in an honourable society.
Are we not gentlemen??

Some of our fans continually jump oan these stories and berate our club..
Negative story about Deidco
Quickly followed by a negative story concerning Celtic

i had no wish to enter or take side in your discussion but i found it an odd thing to say regarding our club.
maybe tad hypocritical of me given that i questioned something you said in discussion with another but i find in general, taking up the baton where others have left off is a fruitless and thankless task on this blog. well left alone methinks

Fellow Tims….
Please vote FOR the resolution…and please hold the Board accountable for their absolutely disgraceful recommendation against. I hold them in total contempt for that.
Why do you support an organisation run by people for whom you have total contempt?
Is that not contemptible hypocrisy?

That’s a reference you brought up right there, to defend your insipid point.
Who, today, on CQN, used that argument, that Fergus McCann was Sadam Hussain??
F@cking nonsense.
Forever find yourself cast into the bog of eternal stench, from which you shall never recover.

“F.F.M.
That`s what I said.I stand by it.
Your politics is your business.”
Where did I mention my own politics?
Do you know how all this infighting kicks off, part of it is because some wish not to allow others to have doubts and to have them voice them.
Where is the respect in that?
As far as the books go, the Celtic board are doing a great job. Marvellous even. Unfortunately it does not take a lot of imagination to produce honest books and when it comes to other sector/departments of the club, then that becomes patently obvious.
Some supporters have concerns where the present incumbents are taking us, most valid concerns too.
Regards canamalar’s resolution, I have come to the opinion that those presently in office do not have the will, or the bottle, to accord it the credence it deserves. For whatever reason they do not want to rock the boat one iota. That in itself should ring alarm bells.
But when we eventually arrive at our destination on this shhhhhhhhhhh! ‘quiet’ Celtic bus, then don’t whinge if the panorama doesn’t quite tally with your minds image.
In the interim, you want to stop the infighting, well maybe a good place to start would be to desist from making inane posts about others concerns. You know if you do so then you’ll only be countered with their side of the argument, which you already knew. Canamalar once said he thought ‘personality’ was an obstacle to his garnering enough shareholders, unfortunately I agree with him, but to his eternal credit, he started it and he achieved his goal. More than could ever be said for the snyde back-stabbers and attention seekers who have nothing to offer the issue beyond personal insults. Regardless whether they are camouflaged with a wee smilie.
Canamalar is doing nothing more than what is his right and some, it would appear, wish to deny him that right or if not, then to smear and ridicule his name.
Sad really, now that is what I would describe as the work of ‘green huns’.
Macjay, you might like to scroll back and answer the question I asked earlier. Actually, on reflection, I don’t want an answer, I’d be more than happy if you just considered the question with regards your accusation of hypocrisy.
Now is it cold enough to have some cheese on toast?

Its not odd from a practical point of view
Our club is a football club its not a political vehicle to make change in society, that can only come from the people pardon the hun pun.

Morning,all.
Just popped in for a coffee and a fag, have a wee decko at what’s been going on since about midnight.
Seems I picked a good night to be out and about, canny leave yeez in charge at all….
One point I will make though is that if Celtic are already paying around £7 an hour min to their staff, why are they intent on blocking the resolution on The Living Wage?
The difference is relative peanuts;the goodwill and excellent PR such a gesture would bring would be worth so much more.
Go on,Celtic-you know it makes sense!!!!!!!

i dont believe our club is a political vehicle but practical or otherwise it not just a football club it is clearly more than that.

Kitalba,
Canamalar has argued his points for years here as you know, and never done it to win friends or influence people.
His arguments have always been strong, and in my mind right,
He’s also been an easy target it seems here for that very reason.
Something stinks in Denmark.
I have the utmost respect for Paul and WC, but won’t sit back and watch genuine Celtic Supporters be dismissed by half-witted nonsense amongst our own.
Am angry and depressed.
Cue fudwit arguments.
Next question to them….you are comfortable with arrests of our supporters….why is \THAT never dealt with or discussed????
