Show Your Hand

1036

When I grew up everyone knew about Thalidomide, a drug given to prevent morning sickness in expectant mothers, which caused severe limb abnormalities in the child.  The drug was used for only a short period, so those suffering from the condition are all of a certain age.

The condition is both very recognisable and rare, so there is a good chance you will have noticed Gerry Cleary (above) at a Celtic game at some point.  When I was a boy I saw him at Love St and heard about the scandal later that night from my (animated) mother. There was a fresh news story only yesterday, detailing the history of one uncompensated victim.

Gerry is part of a campaign by Thalidomide sufferers to raise awareness of the condition and put pressure on the drug’s developer, Chemie Grunenthal, to compensate UK victims.  On this occasion, you are not being asked to put your hands in your pockets, you’re being asked to register your support of the Show Your Hand campaign.

Gerry explains the campaign below:

“My name is Gerry Cleary, I am a 51 year old Celtic supporter from East Kilbride who was born with a condition called Thalidomide caused by a so called wonder drug manufactured by a German pharmaceutical company, Chemie Grunenthal.

“There is currently a major awareness campaign underway to put pressure on this company to face up to their responsibilities, finally apologise and compensate all thalidomers affected by their actions over 50 years ago.

“I know being a hoops fan all my life and following the team all over Europe our club is open to all and our fans second to none, and all I ask is the Celtic family to show their support by logging on to our campaign website www.showyourhand.org which enables you to register your support.  It also details the history of the biggest pharmaceutical disaster in modern times and is both enlightening and informative.

“I look forward to your support.

Hail Hail !!!”

I know we can’t all afford to participate in the many needy causes we feature regularly here but we can all support this campaign, as can the club, I am sure.

  1. Does anybody else remember that the Rogues in Brogues use to finish their set at the ole Burns Howff with a rousing version of the ole classic

“Hey, Lord (Nimmo Smith), don’t ask me questions”?……or is that just a rumour?

  2. weeminger:

They could always print a programme that was just full of advertisements. No editorial or articles… just adverts.

But still charge you a tenner for its exclusivity and novelty factor.

I don’t know what they are going to write, but I think we might just get to read diplomacy and spin being stretched to Pluto and back.

  3. Gordon j,

I noticed Sammy and pukki both played last night. Both subbed off so Hopefully tactical. Broony and Charlie played ok and looked fit enough imo.

Corkcelt tells us Tone played well.

Forster, biton and lustig all named on bench but didn’t feature. I’m not sure if lustig was fit enough to play or if it’s common practice in internationals to name all subs in 2nd game regardless of fitness.

Is it true? Has our hero really cut off his flowing locks?

Not to worry bhoys, remember when Henke cut off his dreadlocks?

    He got even better!

  5. Montrose said in their programme:

““Playing their first season in Division Three, The Rangers are a newco of the now defunct Glasgow Rangers. Currently top of the table, they will be hoping to go on to seal the title and clinch their first silverware.”

    Kitalba,

Celtic fans and maybe all other SPL fans should take a full page of the matchday programme (shouldn’t cost too much but would be priceless) the first time they play Newrangers with the above paragraph in big bold type.

This all stinks to high heaven…and its time something was done

PL and DD don’t represent me….they can wish for the Old Firm all they like…imo…it wont be accepted.

  7. Kit lullaby or battlecry. The battlecry seems aimed at our own. The implications are that the board are not Celtic men or are cowards. I don’t believe that. Misguided? not by their own admission and not by the evidence of the rotting corpse of Sevco. They may need to chnage tactics if more than a few demand.

  8. Taurangabhoy:

They are not going to go bust, they might very well go back into admin, that might even be part of the plan, but they are coming back and one day they are going to rock right up at our door in the biggest shiniest bus money can buy. And in the front seats will be sitting the families of the match officials.

I repeat, we can try to do something, or we can try harder to do nothing and just leave the mess for our kids, and their kids, to sort out. Very generous of us.

The incumbents on the board don’t care, they’ll be gone, like politicians, they live only for the day, but the supporters kin will still be there, still wondering, still divided.

And we’ll be dead and our kids will be asking each other, I wonder if daddy bricked it too.

I would suspect Brother Walfrid would be seriously aggrieved to learn that the club are are lavishing the most vain, pampered, spoilt employee sector in the world with money and luxuries way beyond the imagination of 99.999999% of the world’s population

I think a lot of it depends on timing. If it happens in the cup this season, I think the club are switched on enough to avoid the OF tag, or any suggestion that they’re our oldest rivals etc.

If by chance it’s not until they’re actually in the same division as us, then the fan base might be more apathetic about the whole thing and they’ll risk it.

From the outside it’s quite an interesting conundrum for them.

Is that all of Chic or just Nile Rogers? And those colours….would they be fine?

  15. weeminger:

I’m one of the ones who paradoxically had no issue with them coming back, as long as all the rules are adhered to and an appropriate sentence is served. It was even begun, they were not thrown out of the league to begin again from the juniors. I don’t hate them for that, I despise those who buckled and bricked it to facilitate it.

    Whomsoever they might be.

Only one club voted for them to be expelled from senior football and it was not Celtic.

If we get them in the cup, it is going to be interesting, many questions will be answered.

  16. Seriously…if there is anyone on our board willing to help them, after the years of violence and bigotry we have suffered…I will be truly astonished, and extremely saddened.

And if that’s the agenda, then money is their god….but I wont be contributing financially ever again….in reality, it looks like they are in cahoots with the devil….that’s not for me.

If our board cant stand up for their own supporters….what is the point

It really is time serious questions are asked…I mean, who is it exactly, that is funding our success at the moment….yeah bhoys that’s right…its us

Ask questions….its the sensible thing to do….I don’t like the way Celtic are being run at all….im sure im not the only one.

  17. Been catching up with the nightshift/early morning posts and I saw a few comments on the subject of Celtic paying the Living Wage rate and what would Brother Walfrid think of this.

Now I have no Idea what Br Walfrid’s views would be on this subject and neither does anyone else. Br Walfrid is no longer with us, anyone claiming to know how he would react to current events is simply speculating based on their own personal beliefs.

Br Walfrid was instrumental in the formation of Celtic, however he moved on and when Celtic changed from a charity to a business I am not aware of him making any public pronouncement on the rights or wrongs of this move. I could be wrong on this of course.

As a historical aside when the Irish govt (26 county version) was considering a limited form of free medical care for mothers and babies two of the most voiciferous opposition groups were the Catholic Church and Doctors. They believed it took away personal choice and was just a little too much like “Communism” for their taste. So the Catholic church has not always had the best record on issues of social justice.

For the record I support Canamalrs motion and the motion on the Living Wage.

I mentioned what I was watching on TV at the time as many on here do and put an opinion on the subject again which many do and it grew arm and legs after that, I never said anything out of order the discussion was about leaving your kids alone, you came in at the end a day later if it bothered you you shouldn’t have got involved.

On the Celtic board, they are doing more good than bad slot more and the club in general are in a very good place and have been for a while good manager, good team, playing champions league and are league champions and will be for the foreseeable future, so I don’t get why everybody is moaning about everything. What happens with the Huns is nothing to do with us don’t see why people can’t get that. HH

  20. Just in to say….

I canny believe the amount of fans on here who canny get their heads around the mechanics of this Celtic ‘bored’ ?

See, to cut a long story short – The Celtic support are being taken for a bunch of ‘dicks’ by the ‘bored’ imo.

Know what’s worse ? Yeez awe roll-up year after year and let them dae it tae yeez again.

The ‘boreds’ philosophy or, motto is….

“Gies awe yer money n get back oot again !!!” FMM

Ah mean, yeez gie these folk yer money then – they snaffle it.

Yeez talk aboot the huns being dumb ? Eh ?

The Celtic ‘bored’ don’t give a f#ck aboot the Cellic fans – not now – not ever.

I fully appreciate the proposal from the likes of, Canamalar, Morrissey The 23rd et al

but, honestly – they’re pissing against the wind. imo

The only proposal that the ‘bored’ would understand would be if the fans stopped being taken for a bunch of ‘d#cks’ on a grand scale and proposed…

“There will be no more fan investment in the club until the charlatans who couldny give a f#ck aboot the fans are removed – with immediate effect !!!”

Until such a b#llsy approach is taken – the ‘bored’ will continue to park the Celtic FC bus in the lay-bye awaiting the return of the O££ F£££. imo

Does it not bother anybody that – despite all the money taken in last season – Celtic are approaching the half way mark in the CL group stages without a striker ?

Too busy laughin at the huns I take it ?

  27. Sandman:

I think you’ll find that some of us are old enough to be the parents of the Celts for Change.

And I DON’T see many, if any who are actively trying to have the board removed, all I see is some concerned Celtic Supporters asking questions about issues that are close to their hearts; issues they perceive the board to be neglecting.

Is there something obscene about that, something that I am missing? Because I personally think that anybody who tries to silence or ridicule a sincerely concerned supporter just because he/she doesn’t share the concern… is obscene.

I agree the pie eating sycophant will lavish praise on the next CEO in an attempt to ensure his pockets continued to be filled with Hunco fans money. However anybody coming in looking to make serious cuts to budget ( and let’s face it they need to) will quickly identify that there are managers out there (including ex Huns.. e.g. McCall, McInnes) with twice the ability and experience who come at half the price of Ally’s reduced salary.

He will be made to. ‘walk away’ …?
