Show Your Hand

1036

When I grew up everyone knew about Thalidomide, a drug given to prevent morning sickness in expectant mothers, which caused severe limb abnormalities in the child.  The drug was used for only a short period, so those suffering from the condition are all of a certain age.

The condition is both very recognisable and rare, so there is a good chance you will have noticed Gerry Cleary (above) at a Celtic game at some point.  When I was a boy I saw him at Love St and heard about the scandal later that night from my (animated) mother. There was a fresh news story only yesterday, detailing the history of one uncompensated victim.

Gerry is part of a campaign by Thalidomide sufferers to raise awareness of the condition and put pressure on the drug’s developer, Chemie Grunenthal, to compensate UK victims.  On this occasion, you are not being asked to put your hands in your pockets, you’re being asked to register your support of the Show Your Hand campaign.

Gerry explains the campaign below:

“My name is Gerry Cleary, I am a 51 year old Celtic supporter from East Kilbride who was born with a condition called Thalidomide caused by a so called wonder drug manufactured by a German pharmaceutical company, Chemie Grunenthal.

“There is currently a major awareness campaign underway to put pressure on this company to face up to their responsibilities, finally apologise and compensate all thalidomers affected by their actions over 50 years ago.

“I know being a hoops fan all my life and following the team all over Europe our club is open to all and our fans second to none, and all I ask is the Celtic family to show their support by logging on to our campaign website www.showyourhand.org which enables you to register your support.  It also details the history of the biggest pharmaceutical disaster in modern times and is both enlightening and informative.

“I look forward to your support.

Hail Hail !!!”

I know we can’t all afford to participate in the many needy causes we feature regularly here but we can all support this campaign, as can the club, I am sure.

  1. Morning all a calm chilled foggey dew descends upon the Chilterns…

Paul does a great job highlighting the Thilidomide campaign, hope Gerry Cleary and the other victims get their situation understood and properly compensated.

Like a few I’m at that age and my Mum was offered the drug, there was a lad round the corner from me who was a sufferer, his legs were uneffected and he was a good Footballer, often seen him in the public baths swimming, he lived life as full as possible.

It really is but for the grace of God…

On that subject I’ve got to say the same for the Mc Canns, we had three children in just over three years, with a demanding job and all that expected it is not easy to be consistently perfect.

I don’t know the Mc Canns so can only go by what I’ve seen on the news and interviews and it strikes me that they are a couple who deeply cares for their children and under severe duress, have left no stone unturned to find their daughter.

Well done to Gordon and the boys beating Croatia, once again it shows that Scotland can produce Footballers and can set up a team to compete with top quality sides.

Charlie and Broonie didn’t just look comfortable at that level, they looked quality.

    Hail Hail

  2. Mather not the only one.

@BBCSport: Rangers chief executive Craig Mather and non-executive director Bryan Smart both resign, the club says in a statement to the stock exchange.

    Macjay:

Would you give up on your faith because a few mere mortals in very senior and influential posts disgraced their calling.

The Celtic board are fallible, very fallible. They have done a couple of things recently that I thought contemptible, do you think I’m a hypocrite to continue to love the club?

    Multi-tasking right now.

    Re. Faith.

That`s quite close to the mark,Kit.

    I know some who have.

My saving grace, however,is that my faith (Church) is in fact my fellow punters.

Not the Vatican, the hierarchy or any individual Catholic.

    Re.the Board and its fallibility.

We`re all fallible. To err is human,to forgive divine.

I`d be interested to know what the Board have done that is contemptible.

I do,however, find the hun organisation endemically contemptible and have done for as long as I have known them.Quite a while. As you know.

I celebrate their demise and feel certain that our Board feel the same way.

What organisation would not celebrate the demise of their biggest (only?) competitors?

    The difference is :

    I can say it.They can`t.

    ————

Do you see the irony in your post?

You’re willing to ‘forgive’ the sins of the church because your faith is in your fellow parishioners (commendable and also my stance!) and that it is they whose example you follow.

However, you don’t appear to have the same faith in the bread and butter supporters of Celtic.

No shame on how they achieved that then……….

A growing number of supporters are feeling disenfranchised by the actions of the Celtic board.

It has nothing to do with being perpetual moaners and much more to do with a lack of support from those members of the PLC for their fellow Celtic supporters.

I don`t know what the Celtic Board have or have not done about the issues you raise.

    Do you?

The fact that they have not publicised their thinking, attitudes and opinions does not mean they have no concerns about them or are ignoring them.

Why would any successful organisation publicise its strategic plan for the future?

What I do know is what Lenny has said about his working relationship with the Prince of Darkness ,Peter Lawwell.

    Fulsome praise.

Now,that`s not good enough for some, but it`s good enough for me.

That, along with what I do know.Celtic`s competitive performances.

I couldn`t be happier with the progress Celtic have made in the last few years.

  9. macjay:

I know about some of them, so do others on here, and don’t fool yourself, there are Celtic employees who post on here too, I could name some of them, but that would not be what they’d want and would not be nice either. Breaking confidences is not for me.

I’m sure you were aware of most, if not all, of the points that I raised, surely some of them caused you some concern at least.

  10. macjay

Agree with what you say, Big Peter does appear to have a good relationship with Neil.

My frustration is the lack of challenge from the board to the SFA regards Oldco/Newco.

We have been systematically cheated by thems for years and our board seems passive on the matter.

I’m raging about it , are they?

Or a we just treading water until Newco come join us in the SPL and we go back to future?

Two questions and two topics.Catholicism and Celtic.

How representative of the Celtic support are those who challenge the Board?

    I don`t group-type my fellow Tims,so “bread and butter supporters”doesn`t compute.

What I do know is that there are wedge supporters who seek to impose their politics on Celtic.

  13. Morning all. Brightish again down here. Threat of heavy rain later today. Par for the course, of course.

What may be becoming par for the course is the latest resignations down Govan way. I take it they are trying to pave the way for their latest saviour from South Africa.

  14. PAUL Murray successfully blocked Rangers from holding their AGM on 24 October after he won an interim interdict at a Court of Session hearing during which the current Ibrox club’s hierarchy was accused of engaging in “guerilla warfare”.

The embarrassing defeat for Rangers, who were also ordered to pay costs for yesterday’s legal hearing in Edinburgh, means the club must now stage an AGM by 30 December and must also give shareholders at least 21 days’ notice.

Richard Keen QC also claimed that the Rangers board may have broken the law by failing to tell the rest of the club’s shareholders about Murray’s bid in sufficient time before the planned AGM on 24 October. He said: “An offence has been committed by every member of this board. The board have placed themselves in a very difficult situation by failing to discharge their statutory obligations. They have committed an offence. If I am right, the consequences of that must be visited upon them.”

The court defeat was the second embarrassment for the Rangers board after they were forced to publish amendments to weekend statements which suggested King had been lined up as chairman to lead a new fundraising bid. Rangers released a follow-up statement to the London Stock Exchange claiming that King’s position would be on the football club board, which is the company formerly known as Sevco Scotland, and not the plc board.

Seems two board members have had the consequences of their actions visited upon them

SFA anything to say reference this club how it is run and the gangsters who run it?

Congrats to WGS, never watched the match, a team representing a corrupt vile organisation which brings shame on Scotland deserves no support, it is time for supporters of football in Scotland to send a clear message to the SFA, change is urgently required……..starting at the top

Most on here (myself included) never come close to facing the complexities

involved in actually running an entity such as Celtic in the media glare 24/7.

Marrying the passion, the energy, the values and the thirst for on field and commercial success in the public spotlight and in an environment where we have many more who would sooner see us fail than succeed cannot be easy.
