Show Your Hand

1036

When I grew up everyone knew about Thalidomide, a drug given to prevent morning sickness in expectant mothers, which caused severe limb abnormalities in the child.  The drug was used for only a short period, so those suffering from the condition are all of a certain age.

The condition is both very recognisable and rare, so there is a good chance you will have noticed Gerry Cleary (above) at a Celtic game at some point.  When I was a boy I saw him at Love St and heard about the scandal later that night from my (animated) mother. There was a fresh news story only yesterday, detailing the history of one uncompensated victim.

Gerry is part of a campaign by Thalidomide sufferers to raise awareness of the condition and put pressure on the drug’s developer, Chemie Grunenthal, to compensate UK victims.  On this occasion, you are not being asked to put your hands in your pockets, you’re being asked to register your support of the Show Your Hand campaign.

Gerry explains the campaign below:

“My name is Gerry Cleary, I am a 51 year old Celtic supporter from East Kilbride who was born with a condition called Thalidomide caused by a so called wonder drug manufactured by a German pharmaceutical company, Chemie Grunenthal.

“There is currently a major awareness campaign underway to put pressure on this company to face up to their responsibilities, finally apologise and compensate all thalidomers affected by their actions over 50 years ago.

“I know being a hoops fan all my life and following the team all over Europe our club is open to all and our fans second to none, and all I ask is the Celtic family to show their support by logging on to our campaign website www.showyourhand.org which enables you to register your support.  It also details the history of the biggest pharmaceutical disaster in modern times and is both enlightening and informative.

“I look forward to your support.

Hail Hail !!!”

I know we can’t all afford to participate in the many needy causes we feature regularly here but we can all support this campaign, as can the club, I am sure.

  1. canamalar,

I’ve copied the relevant part from paul’s article yesterday below.

The matter in question is a resolution before the AGM urging Celtic to write to the SFA and Uefa regarding club licencing for season 2011/12. As a result of this resolution Celtic’s written response to the AGM confirms that they questioned the SFA’s licensing at the time directly with the Association, a fact which had not previously been revealed. The matter was also raised with Uefa. Both bodies backed the SFA actions.

It was Paul’s reference to UEFA which prompted my earlier post.Maybe Paul can help to clarify.

Was the matter raised with CFCB at UEFA?

If so then it would be useful to know how it went.

If indeed the matter has already been raised there, then I am not sure where else we could reasonably or realistically expect the club to go.

Although electronic voting may close before the AGM the company may still make other voting methods available up to the date of the AGM and at the AGM itself. The company’s Articles or other shareholder documents should specify the voting procedures

If you want your vote counted in support of this resolution can you please fill in the voting form and make your proxy out to morissey, scan and send to either of us, for morisseys details I will put you in touch with him, we’ll need to check out if a scanned copy is ok first though.

    Medtim,

I asked Paul67 that yesterday still not had a response, then again he may have simply missed it or he does not want to answer, either way its no big deal, he has his business interests to protect.

These questions should be kept for the AGM P67 is not on the board so anything he says will not satisfy all of us. Irrespective of how we view Paul67s status we must treat him as a neutral. He has remained neutral throughout this campaign lets leave it at that.

  6. winning captains,

    Lennybhoy -ITV1, back of 7.

Havin’ said that STV fell out with ITV and they stopped showing the games, so you might be getting repeats of Taggart instead.

It’s also on one of the Sky channels.

  10. There won’t be time at the AGM to resolve this matter to anyone’s satisfaction.

Time will be short, there will be a brief statement, a shambolic discussion, it will go to a vote and the proxy votes held by the board will win the day by 95%+.

If you want answers from the board you’d be better to ask them for the information now.

  11. Dontbrattbakkinanger on

Sorry, wrong info. It’s not Taggart, it’s Lewis, which is Taggart for Geordies.

Bake Off is down to the last four. Compulsive viewing.

  12. Dontbrattbakkinanger on

Also not on any of the Sky Sports channels, but Scotland and ROI games are.

THis lazy journalism isn’t as easy as it looks.

  13. Canamalar to me this was only ever about the principle involved and getting the matter in the open instead of pretending that everything was just fine as the board have done.

The bulk of the Celtic support will be behind you but DD always wins any vote.

This board seems to be losing their touch with the support and that spells trouble ahead, it saddens me to say.

    Big Nan,

As you say its about getting it out in the open and thats been achieved IMO against the odds so who knows whats to come, we can but hope.

From the articles I’ve seen in the meeja correctly for a change this agenda is being forced by the obsessed supporters and the board are in the clear, even the demented hoards are backing our board :o) however in the interests of good corporate governance the board may feel they have been forced to vote in the resolution in the interests of whats best for the company. To vote this down in the face of popular demand may harm the company more than anything they have dealt with previously, we can but hope eh.

Jazz not my thing, but I’m with you on that Ice Cream Shop.

Ordinary shareholders and preferential exchangeable shareholders only, but if you can get someone to give you their proxy you can represent them.

‘The Italian Touring Club has recently assigned the “orange flag” of the “Migliori borghi d’Italia” (“Best Villages of Italy”), a distinguished sign recognizing the peculiarity of its beauty and of its quality. Barga has also been, since 1999, the home of the “European Gnome Sanctuary” run by the Garden Gnome Liberation Front.’

Even if they are obliged to give an answer, they are not obliged to give one which is satisfactory. Nevertheless , what you have done is magnificent and you have done what is most important of all. You have tried. I truly admire your efforts ( and, of course, those of Morrissey the 23rd).
