Show Your Hand

1036

When I grew up everyone knew about Thalidomide, a drug given to prevent morning sickness in expectant mothers, which caused severe limb abnormalities in the child.  The drug was used for only a short period, so those suffering from the condition are all of a certain age.

The condition is both very recognisable and rare, so there is a good chance you will have noticed Gerry Cleary (above) at a Celtic game at some point.  When I was a boy I saw him at Love St and heard about the scandal later that night from my (animated) mother. There was a fresh news story only yesterday, detailing the history of one uncompensated victim.

Gerry is part of a campaign by Thalidomide sufferers to raise awareness of the condition and put pressure on the drug’s developer, Chemie Grunenthal, to compensate UK victims.  On this occasion, you are not being asked to put your hands in your pockets, you’re being asked to register your support of the Show Your Hand campaign.

Gerry explains the campaign below:

“My name is Gerry Cleary, I am a 51 year old Celtic supporter from East Kilbride who was born with a condition called Thalidomide caused by a so called wonder drug manufactured by a German pharmaceutical company, Chemie Grunenthal.

“There is currently a major awareness campaign underway to put pressure on this company to face up to their responsibilities, finally apologise and compensate all thalidomers affected by their actions over 50 years ago.

“I know being a hoops fan all my life and following the team all over Europe our club is open to all and our fans second to none, and all I ask is the Celtic family to show their support by logging on to our campaign website www.showyourhand.org which enables you to register your support.  It also details the history of the biggest pharmaceutical disaster in modern times and is both enlightening and informative.

“I look forward to your support.

Hail Hail !!!”

I know we can’t all afford to participate in the many needy causes we feature regularly here but we can all support this campaign, as can the club, I am sure.

Good luck to hoopslegend Artur Boruc at Wembley tonight.

I hope , regardless of the result, he acquits himself well.

And well done to Canalamar, Morrissey Auldheid and the rest of the Don Quixote CSC for their resolution. It may not have the outcome they wanted but to get the resolution on the aganda at all took tremendous perseverance.

Its what will eventually become knowd as the DDD process.

    Awe_naw..,

They have removed the resolution that is not dumbing down, it may be the ploy to pull the resolution as its not what we submitted or signed up for though.

It does seem that this board is ruling by dictate.

Is there contempt for both the non conforming fans and the questioning small shareholder.

I hope I am wrong but It kind of feels that way

  6. canamaler, yep found it.

How can you put “We the undersigned request this course of action,” when there is no action mentioned?

Are you in dialogue with anyone regarding this?

  7. Yesterday I posted my thoughts on the Celtic’s board lack of spine in dealing with the Sectartian FA.

Today I am still pretty angry that we allowed the corrupt rule bending to go unchallenged.

There is a wee man with a bunnet who will be watching this from afar and fuming that the custodians of this great club have allowed us to be shafted again.

What to do next, well for a start I sincerely hope all clubs in the SPFL (with the exception of the dead club) are making new rules on how the future of the game should go forward and that means making sure there are no grey areas or weasel words that allow the secret organisation a way out. By doing this and making the SPFL strong we can sideline the Sectarian FA to the national team affairs and the Scottish cup

The first move should be to appoint referees and elect a new and strong refereeing commitee and take this away from Sectarian FA. No present commitee members need apply must be the headline.

Then and only then can Scottish football begin to cleanse itself of the corrupt and hand shaking cabal of the past.

  11. Paul67,

a terrible drug that was given out at every opportunity. I remember having a conversation with my mother a number of years ago after an airing of a 60 minutes report on this drug. She mentioned to me that she suffered terrible morning sickness with my brother (b1958) and me (b1960) and being offered a drug that would cure it. She flat out refused to take any sort of pill and thank goodness she made that decision.

Green hand added to the wall, and thank you for highlighting this battle for righteousness.

  13. I used to go to Pontin’s holiday camps when I was a pup and during the night time entertainment that they put on they used to announce on the stage whenever there was a baby crying in one of the chalets, to alert the parent to go back attend to the wee blighter.

  14. The Honest Mistake loves being first on

I admire people who against the odds, get off their backsides and make an effort to do what they believe is right.

I can’t stand blockers, those who abuse their positions to prevent what’s right from being achieved.

I think we all need to take a serious hard look at what’s happening with this resolution and ask ourselves if we are heading in the right direction.

I’m beginning to question the morality of the clubs guardians.
