Shuggie Edvaldsson, character and experience

319

It is almost impossible to explain the excitement generated ahead of Johannes ‘Shuggie’ Edvaldsson in 1975.  He was the first non-Scottish born Celtic player in my lifetime and his arrival marked a philosophical shift at the club; the development plan that secured the European Cup only 8 years earlier was no longer fit for purpose.

1975 was also the year we lost the league for the first time since Jock Stein arrived a decade earlier, almost certainly prompting the manager to broaden his search for reinforcements after the retirement of Billy McNeill and release of Jimmy Johnstone.

His first season at Celtic brought the harsh experience of Rangers winning the treble; the glory years were well and truly over, but Shuggie tasted glory as part of the double winning side in season 76-77.  Kenny Dalglish’s departure that summer dealt the club another blow as it finished fifth in the Premier Division, failing to qualify for European competition just 11 years after reaching the summit, but Edvaldsson was one of that campaign’s highlights, finishing top scorer at the club.

Season 78-79 is remembered for its climatic conclusion, but it was a dogged campaign.  Celtic were poor for much of the season with painful reversals, exactly the kind of attrition Edvaldsson had the character to overcome.  He was provided crucial experience to a young Celtic team who beat Rangers 4-2 with 10 men on the final game of the season.

It was good to see him back at Celtic Park with visiting Motherwell teams in the 80s and good to remember him today, may he rest in peace.

The Celtic blog alluded to the possibility that sevco might be up to the same tactic, aiding them in their pressing game.

Re Sunday Post.Brings back many memories from early 60s.My late mother was a home help and cared for a old lady in the Docks district of Belfast, and when the old dear was finished with the Sunday Post, my mum would get the paper on the Monday.Jack Harkness reporting on a game and Dave Hilley on the back page dealing with North East England games.I remember ‘for overseas readers’ piece. Then Nero and Zero,Oor Wullie and The Broons, not sure if Black Bob was in the Post,or could have been ‘The Weekly News’.

    Still Celtic.

  10. I think the best idea is to get a manager with no ambition and then he will never move until he fails and we get shot of him.

Some real forward thinking right there folks.

Or if he is successful make sure that once we get him tied down to a contract that says he can only leave if we get £9 million, we will then call him a rat for leaving.

Still we can spend the money on players or loanee players or both and plenty off them.

Absolute nonsense but it’s ok , PL has everything under control.

Out of 4 competition’s by January and we will have a review, well it’s the 25th and nothing to see here.

Look at your feet PL and keep stealing your wage.

So in summary what we need is.

A manager that will never reach the top of the tree.

A manager who will do as he is told.

A manager who is happy to be in a job.

A manager that will never question his employer.

    A manager who is cheap

    A manager, A manager, A manager.

How long Peter FFS, but then again we know that if something has to get done, it will be DD that will have to get aff his arse and get it sorted.

£1 million per year and worth every penny.

Keep up the good work PL you have done a great job, fantastic, stupendous.

We didn’t go bankrupt and let me say this and I know it’s very hun like and I will take the flack that is due, but hay ho.

  12. Hariede or Solbaaken?

Mr Hariede was scathing about the fitness of Celtic when his Malmo team put Celtic out of Europe, dont think he had a high estmation of the players in the jerseys either, Solbaaken failed at Wolves but was with Copenhagen who cuffed us last year, if I remember he has a heart condition.

In Newcastle all you see is Newcastle tops. A one club town.

What incompetent management of the club. Our finances are wrecked and we need to rebuild a team.

This recovery may be long and painful. If it is to proceed surely there needs to be a change in the boardroom. 18 years for a CEO is too long in the best of circumstances, but is unthinkable after this car crash of a season.

  18. I’m not getting my hopes up for a lot of transfers in or out this window. So far this month in Serie A there have been a total of 8 permanent transfers. 11 in the Bundesliga. There have been 9 in England and 9 in Ligue 1. Covid is hammering football.

The Dirty Dozen buying a guy from Aberdeen and potentially 2 more from Bournemouth before selling someone is…er, surprising, considering they lost £30m last season before another debt conversion.

And who knew the SPFL let them do this – and how much did they get for it? –

Glasgow Rangers have agreed a landmark Indian broadcast partnership with Star Sports after acquiring the regional rights to Scottish soccer’s top flight for the 2020/21 season.

Essentially acting as the Scottish Professional Football League’s (SPFL) sales agent in India, the Premiership giants agreed a deal with the Disney-owned pay-TV network that includes the club’s live matches, as well as ‘unique access’ and behind-the-scenes content. Alongside the Rangers matches, Star Sports will broadcast more than 15 other Premiership fixtures over the course of the season.

In addition to the Premiership coverage, the deal also includes exclusive rights to Rangers’ friendly with Bengaluru FC at Ibrox next summer.

Rangers partner Bengaluru FC to increase Indian fan base

The move is designed to continue the Gers’ commercial push in the Indian sub-continent, with the club having signed a two-year strategic partnership with the Indian Super League (ISL) in September last year.

Rangers women’s outfit also boosted their profile in India last year by signing Bala Devi, the national team’s top scorer and former captain, making her the country’s first professional female player.

James Bisgrove, Rangers’ director of commercial and marketing, said: “The signing of the broadcast deal will give Rangers and the SPFL Premiership unprecedented visibility in India and with it a unique opportunity for both the club and Star Sports to develop commercially.”

Why is PL anywhere near the process to find a new coaching team?

He has previous for being totally useless.

Could be mistaken, but I have a feeling that part of the licensing or planning permission for Celtic Park being rebuilt was that admission would be by ticket only.

I’m not sure pay at the gate is allowed. Probably means queuing at ticket office followed by a queue at the gate is the closest we could get.

  21. Still trying to work out James Forrest Caffeine article, must admit, still puzzled.

Caffeine is used in every dressing room up and down the land, in every kitchen across the globe.

Something legal being used is only an advantage if you’re the only one using it, except its not an advantage because everyone is using it, including our own players.

I’ve been using caffeine pre workout for about 30 years because it works and is very safe when not abused. Their is a reduced perceive of exertion, it allows you to work harder and not feel you are and brings an added focus benefit. Its popular with athletes across all different sports because Sport is a combination of physical and mental skills.

I’m surprised about the Vardy story as 300mg to 600mg is the sweet spot. Anything above that brings in side affects like the jitters, more is not better and the law of diminishing returns comes into effect, it also raises the hormone Cortisol. Cortisol is a stress hormone which plays havoc with blood sugar levels, breaks down lean muscle tissue and increases fat, the exact opposite of what an athlete wants. Caffeine is a stimulant, the body quickly builds up a tolerance and prolonged excessive use will stress the adrenals.

So whatever the reason in improved performances for Sevco I can confidently predict that caffeine is not the said difference.
