Soap opera instalment, Throwing under the bus episode

505

The Celtic soap opera season continued through the weekend.  We were taken to the school of St Mirren on Saturday, then watched incredulously as a central defender we knew little about but who Sky incorrectly reported had signed a pre-contract, was instead heading for Liverpool.

Vasilis Barkas was dropped after the 2-2 draw with Livingston, he would be forgiven for being grateful as Scott Bain was given the unenviable burden of coping with a level of defending unseen at Celtic in decades.  For the good of the player as well as the team, Neil Lennon has to accept Shane Duffy does not have what it takes at this level.  A midweek pantomime against Hamilton went unpunished, while St Mirren fully exploited his meanderings.

In early December, I was assured Neil Lennon had the full support of the dressing room.  Speaking in the heat after Saturday’s defeat, he questioned the players’ attitude and behaviour.  There was no containment of the problem, no deflection of pressure off the squad and onto his more capable shoulders.  Whatever goodwill exists must be under strain.

It must be difficult to find the words for so many post-match failures but throwing players under the bus is not the received wisdom.  You and I are left to ponder what direction our season will plunge towards next.

Deadline Day in the ‘January’ transfer window leaves us with little to get excited about.  We can hope for a central defender to fill the gap left by Christopher Jullien and a right back to allow Kristofer Ajer to move back into the middle.  We cannot, though, buy confidence.

  2. I am going to keep positive today.

Lenny will be replaced by a new manager in the coming weeks.

The team will start to pick up and we will all get behind the new man and buy the season tickets for next season.

The only reason the change has not happened yet is because the correct man has not been found.

I dissagree with this because it would have been better to make ‘any’ change.

But I trust that we have some kind of plan going forward.

I have to believe this is the case .

It’s just trolling now, isn’t it:

“Rangers’ Alfredo Morelos will miss the next three matches after the club admitted his stamp on Hibernian’s Ryan Porteous.

Morelos, who went on to score the winner at Easter Road…”

  4. They certainly seem to scout Bournemouth for players or someone down there likes them, I know H. Redknapp lives down there.

  5. I think I’m just gonna try to be reasonable the day………….

    It’ll be a struggle, but I’m game.

He has had assistance the ex England and Liverpool captain, no doubt in my mind, but we have imploded and have offered no resistance due to the implosion.

So we didn’t get our priority CB , but with Kenny (assuming he doesn’t take 2 months to get fit) it lets us move Ajer in to CB. Question is Bitton or Duffy beside him? Both have a gift goal in them . Do we pay Duffy’s considerable wage ti sit on the bench?

We may find out more tonight .

  8. did we get the 2 centre backs in that we urgently require , naw didn’t think so , just have to go with crap we have currently.

  9. St tams

The plot thickens , need to wait and see if they are any good then, haven’t cost anything by the look of it.

  10. Neil Lennon the Lurgan loan arranger.

So they’ve did it, watched the last star falling, and saw their last window slam shut, all tight together. Four NL windows, money, all spent, and loan deals for both full back positions thrown in place, two years after Lustig’s legs went out the door with Kieran Tierney.

The return of the new improved flexi sieve more holes than a honeycomb it’s what match day normality, and log ins are all about. We even get heaps of irony with sieve supremo Gary Caldwell for his one and only ever, talking Celtic TV appearance, all in the same season.

They put up the barriers and have only been seen briefly waving the white flag of early retirement. NL’s results for five months were previously unseen and did not merit or license ballsy replies to the startled press yesterday, something else did that.

That ‘good review’call high? maybe, a buzz from getting charge of Jonjoes moby number, to clinch the last loan? A much needed welcome Celt, but an inditement of the fankle we got into, picking personnel, then by doing nothing when they should.

There is no quick fix in a Devon Loch season, we’ve loads of players in the front stand, a full bench, all queuing up for their chance to ‘let Neil down’ some of them fresh out from under the bus.

A log jam of struggling mercenaries some of whom don’t even make the squad, but they’re now backing up, NL has no one new left to launch, there are no development games in a pandemic, just dead rubbers since October it seems.

The cavalry are coming new Celtic custodians will pick their way through the rubble, they’re done, they’ve made their mark in history and a stash, one day at our pinnacle but a baby step back to demise.

Thank god, we’re still alive CSC

  11. Scaniel my friend, how are you?

And how have the donkeys been during this extended cold period?

Of course i’m asking about the ones in Ayrshire and not the ones at Lennoxtown.

  12. What’s happened to the Killie Pie during the pandemic, and will it still be the same when things return to normal?

  13. Go tell the Spartim on

All this talk of Duffy or Bitton beside Ajer, I’d wager he’ll play all 3, you wouldn’t put it past him, or Duffy up front and Odsonne just off him, have we tried that yet?

There’s no anger, apathy left just acceptance

I’ll take the lead from those earlier who are gonna be positive, it’s a good place to start

  14. Go tell the Spartim on

Did Kilmarnock and the Killie Pie not part their ways? The Killie Pie is still available but thankfully you don’t need to go to Rugby Park to get it.

yip , probably the best pairing currently , not sure Welsh if is faster than Duff y and also lacks height for a centre back.

  17. Bhoy From The Boyne on

How much will it cost Celtic to find a new CB in light of Ben Davis snub?

4-5m for a British based player of similar ability under contract?

I don’t agree with those who argue it wasn’t the club’s fault if the player/agent decided to wait until the last day of transfer deadline in case of better offers.

If Hammond/recruitment team identified Davis in past months as one can presume, then club should have made the pre contract offer on Jan 2nd and given the player a deadline of few days to consider/sign.

If he didn’t accept, then we should have moved onto our next CB target in week 2 of January.

Now we end up with no new CB. Duffy is a liability and Ajer is off in the summer.

No doubt we will end up with Bitton at CB for next seasons CL qualifiers – if we get 2nd.

    So frustrating!

Good morning cqn from a very cold but snow free Garngad

Welcome to League matchday 25 or as some may call it the 25th league shit show.

Make no mistake this will be a very tough game for us.

For the first time in a very long time my bravado/confidence is not there and I fear for us tonight.

Fear for us against Kilmasonic FFS how bad have we become.

    D :(

I know, this Season has become a mare for us, groundhog day over & over again. My spirit will

be in the chadwick stand tonight, going through all the motions & willing our Club on.

I will probably get through 100 fags @ the rear of the said stand, in the process.

My nerves will be shattered, as well. I’ve got some not bad memories of said venue, the

negatives was when we won 5-0 there under Mon, only to find out that Dunfermline had

layed down @ Ibrox. & the match we lost 1-0, with it being Robbie Keens 1st match for us.

The indifferent, was the time we where 3-0 down @ half time, only to come back & make

it 3-3 in the end. The positives @ Rugby Park, the time we won by a barrel load there, when

wee Jinky tore them apart, what, wake up that was back in the Sixties, when I was a very

young lad, & said adventure, unfortunetly for myself, was out of reach of my pocket money.

I remember us winning the League down there, when wee Naka’s free kick, had postage

stamp teritory written all over it. I also remember Tom Rogic’s screemer, near the end

of the match, with myself totaly hugging a complete stranger standing next to Me. & who

could forget, it’s time to hang up the match boots, Broonies miss hit shot, into the ground,

which bounced up nicely, into top of the net @ said venue, although Broony will probably

say that he meant it, who cares young Man, they all count. So Folks, lets just see, how the

rest of the 13 League matches left, pan out. It will not be all doom & gloom, & we all know

that changes have to be made in the near future, to get back on the right path, for future

    success. Hail Hail All.

    ******************

Good Morning, J – All good and safe down here in snowed in D&G. Donkeys doing a lot better than the Lennoxtown ones at the moment. Still can’t fathom out what has happened to our once great set of players and team spirit. Nothing as simple as Lenny is useless (which he is just now) or the players have chucked it(which some have, no doubt) or it’s all Pistol Pete’s fault ( backed by an insipid and cowardly board). Heard an interesting theory from an Olympic gold winner who said he couldn’t get excited about the Tokyo Olympics as he would only perform to his best if a full crowd was there and, besides, he’s already got a gold in his pocket. Think some of our players feel the same. It’s a job for them, not an honour or privilege. We need our soul back.

Lisbon seems a long, long way away these days.

P.S. I hope your brother is enjoying Atletico’s March to the title this year….he’s the only person that shone a wee bit of light on that club who I thought I would hate to my dying days. Now, here’s me hoping they win the league.

I’d go with Ajer and Welsh and stick with it

Agreed, how anyone, never mind a professional football manager, can contemplate starting Duffy is beyond me.

  21. Drew1967,

Don’t do that to me mate – I thought you were saying Howe was at our training this morning!

Good video though – it would be interesting to see a similar one from Lennoxtown

I saw a comment on twitter last night that the rumoured £1.6m 10iar bonus that is keeping NL in the job, is mere chicken feed compared the millions lost in player valuations this season due to player & team performances under his management.

Setting aside this bonus rumour, what are we likely looking at for players in summer based on their form, market place economics post covid and their remaining contract length ?

    £7-8m – Christie?

    €15-20m – Edouard?

    €10m – Ajer?
