Some background on Ronny Deila

1408

Some perspective first.  Ronny Deila, manager of Norwegian champions Stromsgodset, is not about to be appointed Celtic manager.  He does, meet the criteria, unlike the various one-season wonders cast aside from the English Premier League.  I believe there are two other strong candidates, Ronny has no pre-eminence at this stage, but unlike the various ‘favourites’ who have appeared in recent times, at least he is a genuine possibility.

Stefan Johansen worked under Ronny immediately before joining Celtic, which gave club scouts an insight into the coach’s style of play.  Stromsgodset are predominantly an attacking team, who press high up the field and pass quickly.

His players are dedicated athletes or they don’t remain his players for very long.  He is also one of the game’s intellectuals, a former teacher – and what I’ve been asking for since Neil resigned – a student of the game.  His attitude to his own role is one of continual professional development.

Ronny has a track record of improving players and improving teams.  He is not a brand name, nor a shareholder’s whim.  He is not being considered because he’s ‘pals with Peter and out of a job’.

Please bear in mind………..

Ronny Deila is only one of three genuine contenders Celtic are considering at the moment but all three match the same criteria.  They are intelligent, technically adept, progressive, winners.  Which has made me more excited than any of the names suggested so far.

My wee sabbatical taught me a thing or two.

Sometimes it’s wiser not to react or respond but just to allow idiocy to speak for itself.

    Appreciate your endorsement, HT! :-)

How would knowing that information allow others to judge whether or not a comment is justified?

I just can’t see any logical connection.

    ****

I was highlighting what I think is a tasteless practice of attacking a working man’s wage, when his employers are obviously happy with his performance.

We all contribute to someone’s wage, one way or another ,but it does not give us ownership of that person.

Such an unedifying trait of jealousy permeates this blog.

Can everyone who questions another person’s financial worth, justify their own.

    I don’t think so.

Afraid I’m with Ernie…I can’t see the relevance

CFC are a PLC the workings of the PLC are subject of discussion …which includes the wages of the employees

    ———————————————————-

I strongly agree with this. One of the (few?) advantages of a PLC structure is the transparency that is required by law and stock exchange rules (if listed). That’s why we can look at a set of accounts and form a judgement – because we have the kind of information that other structures do not necessarily have to publish.

Just think if PL downsized his salary by just over 10%, we could use the money to pay the living wage and still make a profit of £9.7m (assuming all other factors negate).

Question is, could you survive on a downsized package of £850-900k plus perks? Must be tough!

I’m not saying there’s not tougher jobs than teaching. Of course there are. But you made a cliched slagging of ALL teachers with no qualification.

The skills I’ve learned as a teacher have enabled me to do other professional jobs in both the private and public sector. I could adapt to these jobs but few of the people I met, talented as they were in their comfort zone, would last 5 mins in a typical state secondary.

I don’t know what age you are but the modern day job is nothing like what it was in the past. And not all teachers are great. Like every job, you get good and bad. The modern teaching job is highly demanding and, incredibly, given the stresses and unpaid demands on your personal time, still attracts top people.

“For anyone else I’ve nothing against teachers, both my parents were, I have upmost respect for people that pursue that profession especially HT”

Indeed, almost as much as for nurses who deal with the lame and the sick and the dying, work night shifts and weekends and all the public holidays, have to deal with the drunk and the drugged in full fisticuffs routinely, and just get on with it instead of threatening to go out on strike yet again like the dear teachers who are ever so stressed the poor things.

  9. I am pleased that we are about to appoint a young, tactically aware coach. RD has taken his present club from last ditch survival in Norway’s top tier to league champions. They have made upward progress in each year of his tenure whilst having to sell their better players along the way. Jonathon Johansen was their POTY last year.

He will get us playing the Celtic way and will be a success as a Celtic manager. We will make the group stage of CL this season and at least last 16 in the next. RD will then move to a bigger club. having enhanced his managerial credentials at Celtic.

  13. thomthethim……….There was so much I disagreed with that post it surprised even me :-)

Win the league by a distance……..world record shut outs by the keeper/defence……….played (in patches) some of the best stuff we have played in years…….We sold the spine of the team last summer and didn’t replace adequately in time so under performed in the CL, we are better suited this season.

    Jealousy …really …

Not from me…nor from others that I read

I just happen to be interested in the running of CFC …of which PL is an integral part

His huge salary is way out of kilter with the constant downsizing in all other aspects of the business…it is worthy of comment IMO

Firstly, can I say that nurses do an incredible job, often in very trying circumstances and are greatly under valued and appreciated.

Secondly, how knowledgeable are you regarding the role of teachers in modern inner city schools and the, often unseen and unpaid, duties that they do?

I think RD will be so good we will be unable to hold onto him for longer.

Yes, I’m fine. I’m a bit disappointed at missing out on the golf day. If anyone is looking for a caddie???

  21. Craigellachie10 on

On teachers. As someone who’s kids have gone through the state system in various areas of Scotland I can say that in my experience the vast majority of teachers are motivational committed individuals. Yes there have been a very few lulus who were in the wrong profession. However in my view driving down the wages and conditions of teachers would only reduce the standards.

On PL as chief executive of a company turning over on average say £50m to earn approx 2 per cent seems on the high side to me. Ultimately most of the money we turnover is related to the football performance so I’d have thought that performance bonuses for the CEO should not exceed that for the football management team.

No need for inferences or implications. I stated my answer boldly, clearly and unequivocally but it dies not appear to have been read.
