Squad downsizing though not as you think

202

Signing a 21-year-old Argentinian for a few million pounds breaches the box-office threshold around these parts.  If left back Alexandro Bernabei clears his medical and joins Celtic, he will be the kind of addition to the squad that will have fans looking forward to the new season with renewed confidence.

I have seen too many bogus YouTube clip editions to pay any heed, we learn nothing there.  What we know is that he has been scouted through our recently appointed resource and meets our criteria as a potential Champions League player.

He is still young and Parkhead is a long way from Rosario: the language, the food, living away from home, the weather, will all present encounters that will make any early performances a challenge.  Fortunately, we all know signing 21-year-olds is not about the first month.

One of my strategic concerns about the Celtic squad is height.  Last season’s excellent defensive stats were achieved with small central defenders and full backs.  Bernabei is 2” shorter than Greg Taylor, who at 5’ 9” is an inch taller than Josip Juranovic.

Taylor is a couple of inches shorter than Kieran Tierney, while Mikael Lustig had a 4” advantage on Kieran.  That’s a very real downsizing in a few years, albeit not in the common use of the phrase.  We have plenty of ability middle to front, but not a lot of height there either.

Two years after Shunsuke Nakamura scored the only goal of the game against Manchester United to put Celtic into the knockout phase of the Champions League, the player was benched when the teams again met in the Champions League.  Gordon Strachan spoke to Shunsuke before the game to explain the team was vulnerable at set plays due to a lack of height.

Naka was not short, but Gordon went with Barry Robson, who had a slight advantage and was more accomplished in the air.  If I was facing Celtic next season, I would play for corners and free kicks.  I expect we will see lots of this in the Premiership.

Fair point but there is an agenda in play — a Tory / BoJo agenda in play..

Haven’t watched QT but comments above suggest it was a set up.

I thought that things would have changed on QT after the UKIP / NF lackey who was the booker for the show was outed for the right wing mentalist that she was — but obviously not.

QT at the start was scrupulous regarding keeping known political opinions out of the audience but in the 2000’s heat became more important that light and known hobby horsers / ranters were allowed into the audience to cause offence / shout abuse — mainly to TB/GB in the absence of a credible opposition.

But / but … some of the polling on the Rail Strike is very worrying.

50/50 regarding those who will offer an opinion but a lot of growling / envy / grumbling deep down from the silent types — there is a reason why all the income figures have been given the prominence they have.

They generate jealousy in the old / working class / under employed — Tory / Right wing mentalist 101 for undermining progressive solidarity.

No matter that the railway numbers are full time and include overtime while the nursing figures are straight / no overtime and the carer numbers are not fully full time..

Plus you have the lesson of the 70’s — even union members didn’t like unions apart from the one they belonged too. The power of the media and the inconsistency of human nature — discuss.

However Wakefield is an interesting area.

Labour by habit not by social / economic composition.

Unfortunately there is a lot of it about in the North of England.

Semi rural seats with a town name that are full of repressed / wannabee Tories itching to spew their true faith / beliefs — Brexit / BoJo brought them to the fore.

    Complex world.

  2. SE statement — interesting to see how the transfer window pans out?

    2020/21 — we were a buying club / a desperate buying club.

However we sold JFr to bolster the accounts — big loss to us going forward.

2021/22 — we have been a selling club big time in financial terms.

However the football revenue side seems to have been very buoyant to the point that we have to update our public statements to reflect this which is good / very good.

2022/23 / specifically the summer transfer window — something seems to be stirring.

Maybe AP has convinced the board to spend the 2023/24 money early so that we go into the CL fully prepared / full battalion strength rather than doing it over two seasons.

The statement seemed to put a lot of emphasis on the position of the club after the current transfer window closes — hopefully big positive changes are on the way.

No matter the details AP is fully onboard with the “Growth Agenda” and that is a huge step forward.

Hopefully a couple of good years will give the board enough backbone to draw up plans for a new main stand.

£100mill spend that generates an extra £15mill revenue in year 1 is what we need.
