By Alex Gordon.
A DREADFUL penalty-kick miss by Bahrudin Atajic condemned Ronny Deila to his first defeat as Celtic manager.
The Bosnian striker had the ideal opportunity to level the scores four minutes from time after substitute Paul McMullan had been downed in the box.
Unfortunately, Atajic blazed his spot-kick over the bar into the Hamburg crowd much to the annoyance of the new Hoops gaffer.
It was a largely experimental Celtic line-up with Deila taking no risks ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League qualifier against Legia Warsaw in the Polish capital.
Alas, appalling defending by Filip Twardzik gifted the Germans the winning goal before the interval.
The left-back made a mess of trying to control a long and hopeful punt into the Celtic penalty box. The ball broke clear and was immediately presented to Christopher Nothe who could hardly believe his good fortune.
Nothe struck his effort first time from eight yards and Craig Gordon had no chance as the low drive zipped past his right hand in the 39th minute.
Twardzik toiled in the opening 45 minutes and was also booked in the 33rd minute after a lunging tackle after once again giving the ball away with a slack pass.
Celtic started at whirlwind pace and had three excellent opportunities inside the opening 10 minutes.
Atajic fizzed in a low shot from just outside the box, but keeper Philipp Tschauner got down swiftly to hold the ball at his right hand post.
Five minutes later, Tony Watt, looking lively on the left wing, tried his luck from a tight angle.
His shot totally bamboozled Tschauner, but carried over the crossbar and out to safety.
Amido Balde should have got the game’s opening goal in the 10th minute when he was through on goal after some neat play outside the box.
However, the Portuguese Under-21 international lacked composure at the vital moment and allowed the keeper to block his hurried parting shot.
Gordon, making his second appearance for the Hoops, showed he was still rusty after being out for over two years with a slack goal-kick to Nir Biton.
The Israeli midfielder, captain for the day, was taken unawares and St Pauli broke forward, but made a mess of the opportunity.
Stuart Findlay, partnering Eoghan O’Connell in the middle of the inexperienced back four, was also sloppy with some wayward passes, but the Hoops escaped punishment.
The game was billed as a friendly – and the clubs have an affiliation – but the home players weren’t slow to put in some punishing challenges.
Skipper Soren Gonther was yellow-carded for a rugby tackle on McGeouch that wouldn’t have looked out of place in Celtic’s current home at Murrayfield.
Liam Henderson tried to set up Balde with a neat chip into the danger zone, but the ball carried over the giant frontman’s head.
It looked like being a stalemate at the interval until Twardzik’s lapse in concentration and control allowed St Pauli to snatch the lead.
Deila put on Lukasz Zaluska for Gordon at half-time and replaced the ineffective Balde with Paul McMullan.
Henderson brought the St Pauli keeper into action with a long-range free-kick in the 65th minute. The idea was good, but, unfortunately, the execution didn’t quite match the ambition.
Zaluska produced one memorable moment when he pushed a raging effort from Sebastian Mhyre over the crossbar 10 minutes from time.
Then came Atajic’s dreadful spot-kick blunder which was followed in the last minute by an effort from Watt which swept just wide of the target.
As an exercise, it was worthwhile and the Celtic youngsters will expect to do better when presented with the opportunity to impress the new manager.
CELTIC: Gordon (sub: Zaluska 46); Herron, Findlay, O’Connell, Twardzik; Biton, Henderson, McGeouch; Atajic, Balde (sub: McMullan 46) and Watt.

zbyszek,
From experiance when I got my season book when the Lisbon lion stand opened, six of us sat together.
I think I was the only catholic, all good Celtic men though, including Gilmours brother that owns St Mirren, then again I couldn’t tell what faith he followed or if he had one.
That is the difference between the club that died and the one which prospers.

There was a Catholic player, Alec Bennett, who played for both Celtic and Rangers in the 1900s. I believe he won trophies with both teams. Don’t know if he was the first.
Rangers’ non Catholic policy firmed up in the late 1910s when they cashed in on the orange pound from the influx of Belfast shipyard workers in Govan.
There was a big rise in anti Catholic/Irish sentiment in Scotland in the aftermath of WWI and the “policy” was widely accepted by non Catholic Scotland.

William Kivlichan ( otherwise known as Doc or Dr Kivlichan ) was a Catholic who played for Rangers in 1906 immediately before joining Celtic in 1907 for one of the greatest eras in the club’s history.
I know relatives of Willie’s and his is a story that I will get round to telling one day.
By the way the story of Mohammed Salim is also remarkable as he had won many accolades and trophies in India before he played for Celtic.
When he was brought to Celtic Park, Willie Maley was astonished to find that he played in his bare feet without boots. Before he was allowed to play he was asked to demonstrate his skills before approximately 1,000 “members” of the club who were astonished at his skill and ball control.
On his debut he scored an astonishing goal with a shot from outside the penalty area and he also converted a penalty in a 5-1.
He apparently was given a Celtic Jersey which he kept in his house and more remarkably when he was seriously unwell his son wrote to Celtic to see if he was still remembered by the club. In return, the club not only acknowledged that he was well remembered but also sent a bank draft worth £100 to hep Salim out.
The son was so shocked and so pleased that his father was remembered that he never cashed the bank draft.
If Celtic are to continue their policy of being a selling club, maybe we should try doing it successfully.

Liverpool have already bought striker Lambert and midfielder Lallana from Southampton this summer and Lovren’s addition means they have paid the South Coast club £49m in transfer fees in the last three months.
However, Lallana will miss the start of the new Premier League season with a knee injury.
Lovren, who joined Southampton from Lyon for £8.5m last summer, leaves St Mary’s 12 months into a four-year contract.
With Luke Shaw joining Manchester United for £27m and Calum Chambers set to sign for Arsenal in a deal in the region of £16m, Southampton will have sold five players for a total of approximately £92m.
Koeman has also confirmed the club are looking to offload £15m striker Dani Osvaldo, while Arsenal have enquired about midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin, 24, and Tottenham are interested in striker Jay Rodriguez, also 24.

Worryingly, their manager reckons he is ‘close’ to making some new signings.
That might mean bad news for our chances in any third qualifier.
Btw,I see Efe is the latest CELT to be linked with a move down south.
sispini & ger57
Thanks. After conversation with my friend I read about the reasons of Irish imigration to America and to Scotland, England and Wales. This is where my questions came from.
The prospect of us signing Charlie Adams is not one I relish.
Poor footballer, who repeatedly loses possession.
KOJO
Commons has never hit the same heights for us in a Europe, that he has domestically.
IMHO he is a good club player, who should be able to do us a turn in the qualifying rounds of CL , but, he isn’t up to CL.
So, I would give him a shot on Wednesday
Stokes is different altogether – I think he has the ability to be a much better player than he is, but, too often his positional play is poor.
If you look at Hooper or Griffiths, to a certain extent both of them are predictable – put them on last defender and 7/10 they hit target, and 5/10 they score. If you are a team mate, you know that if you get the ball too them in certain positions you know what they will do .
I also see very slight signs of same with Puuki, all of his goals in last few games have either been front post tap in, or , beating last defender for pace.
In Stokes case, there is an element of unpredictability, which can be good, particularly against inferior opposition, but not against better teams.
At CL , your game-plan is often built around creating a couple of set pieces or moves that get you a shot on goal & Stokes’ poor tactical discipline makes him incapable of playing in these games.
Gary67, cheers for that, Amazing how it adds up!
Some quality buys in there :-)

Neil Lennon stated that neither Pukki nor Boerrigter cost over £1m.

Sorry cant find that film on my F B I think its been removed. If I find it later ill put it on CQN’s.
If the fees quoted for Pukki, Balde and Boerrrigter are correct our scouting isn’t as good as we like to think.
Just watching the athletics highlights, spotted a young lass with Papps emblazoned across her chest. Surely advertising is banned on their running gear?
Brogan Rogan Trevino and Hogan
Very interesting. Looking forward to read more about these stories. Thanks.
Why the hell wd we contemplate signing Adams??
BRT&H
Did we ‘forget’ to sign it?
Mohamed Salim’s entry on both Wikipedia and CELTICWIKI are excellent, and include some good newspaper reports from the time.
Not in home cup scheme, so nipped over to ticket office on Friday and picked up 4 tickets for Legia game :-)
With regards current Celtic position, I personally believe we are in these qualifiers stronger this year than last year, Johansen and improvement on Ledley ? VVD and improvement on Wilson, if fit Biton as good as Victor, although up front still a huge concern.
I personally believe Celtic, could and should remove several players from current squad, and look to replace with better, Kayal 26 and not established in team – Henderson a better option even so young. Boerrigter 28 and not established, replace, Balde 23, in my view doesn’t have it to make it with us and at 23 is no project, also believe we should move on several of the 21 ‘s squad who are not close to squad, yes can develop late, but if not near 1st squad by the age of 21 put out on loan or just release
Controversy here, Kris Commons will be touching 32 by end of current contract, so how much is he worth ( and I am a fan) top pay bracket with us ? We are removing them at minute ( Sammi and Ledley gone) so will we offer ?
Hard but better management of costs
And I do believe we are currently down sizing
Now my major concern, is picks the players as replacements ? Manager or John Park ?
There lies the major problem for me
Oh – we do desperately need pace in the team
Hail Hail
Are Collins & Kenaday back yet?
Prices quoted for both ins and outs in the transfer market are exaggerated and include every possible add on possible in order to make the selling club look like they are getting best value and the buying club look like they are spending the cash and investing in the team.
We probably haven’t paid, to date, as much as was quoted at the time of purchase for Pukki & Boeriggter but we are high unlikely to have received the full amount quoted for the likes of Hooper & Wanyama. Swings and roundabouts. The point was that we reportedly spent 2/3 of the money we reportedly received in transfer fees.

If He Is Given The Centre Forward Role
Legia Will Be Very Difficult….
Especially When We Struggle Against ‘Pub Teams’ Like Morton & Killie….
I Hope We Don’t Have Another ‘Headstrong’ John Barnes At The Helm.

I talked to my friend on Friday. Simple discussion before the game Legia Celtic. I remembered Gil Heron and could not confirm if he was first.
If you are that good in answering the questions – who was first Catholic that signed for Rangers, and when?

Dr. Willie Kivlichan (circa 1906) who had also played for Celtic. If I remember correctly.

Charlie Adam is a thug. Last season Tottenham Hotspur took the unusual step of writing to the FA to complain about Charlie Adam who had injured 3 of their players over two seasons with appalling tackles and had put them out of the game for lengthy periods of time.
We don’t want him at Celtic Park.
Tony Watt will join Standard Liege tomorrow in a £1.2m deal.
The striker spent last season on loan to Lierse and made a big impact in the Belgian League.
Standard Liege made their interest known to Celtic at the turn of the year with a deal being pushed through today.
Watt is expected to fly to Belgium early tomorrow to undergo a medical and complete the deal bringing to an end his brief but eventful career at Celtic.
After impressing at Airdrie he earned a £100,000 move to Celtic in January 2011 after spending time at Celtic and Liverpool on trial.
In April 2012 he made his first team debut, scoring twice at Fir Park as a substitute and went on to make three more appearances that season.
With the Gary Hooper-Anthony Stokes partnership well established first team chances were limited but in November 2012 he made his presence felt on the world stage with a goal against Barcelona that earned Celtic a famous win.
Despite that strike he wasn’t given another opportunity to play as a striker again under Neil Lennon and missed out completely on a place in the squad that won the 2012 Scottish Cup Final against Hibs at Hampden.
At the end of the 2013 summer transfer window he was sent out on loan to Belgian side Lierse but despite making an impact on the pitch fell foul of Stanley Menzo who finally banished him to the reserves.
Ronny Deila enquired about taking him on loan to Stromsgodset but was prevented by red tape, now the new Celtic manager has decided to cash in on the striker just days before a crucial Champions League tie with Legia Warsaw.
Charlie Adam disnae play fitbaw, we need fitbaw players at the Tic..
