Strachan lessons as Milan looms

1655

Neil Lennon will begin to get his players back at Lennoxtown tomorrow after, what for most of the first team, has been a two week international break.  For many of the established players, he’ll be hoping for a clean bill of health, but with trips to Tynecastle and Milan ahead, the manager will be keen to spend time with Teemu Pukki.

Teemu played 92 minutes for Finland in Tbilisi last night so will get little time on the training fields before Celtic’s next two games.  Tynecastle itself may provide the most effective training opportunity ahead of Wednesday’s game at the San Siro.

Delighted for Gordon Strachan, who has already caused an unlikely upturn in Scotland’s fortunes.  He is a better coach and tactician than he ever got credit for.  His Key Performance Indicators (winning leagues, knock out stages of the Champions League) were achieved in spades, but there was a soft underbelly which always seemed to undermine progress.  Curiously, his Celtic team went 15 months without keeping a clean sheet away from home in all competitions, despite winning the league in both seasons this run spanned.

The one game during this period of note was the 1-0 defeat to Milan in the Champions League knock out stage; the only game Celtic completed 90 minutes without conceding.  If Neil Lennon can replicate this achievement he stands an excellent chance of a second successive memorable Champions League campaign.

This group is very much alive for us. Why not go for 3 in a row in Amsterdam in this tourney?

  3. The Battered Bunnet on

As memory serves, Henman put far to many passes into the net to have been a decent keeper…

  4. BRHT,

    I love yer thinking.

I think we punch so high above our weight at home in Europe that wins are almost taken for granted.

I’m a bit more ‘black n white’ in my expectations. So long as we are pot 4’s…..3rd is a great achievement….2nd is almost unbelievable……1st place….well we would have to have some right poor 1,2 and 3 seeds. ;)

There was a very good article somewhere about Derk’s injuries. Possibly on cqn? I cant remember. But basically he’s far from being a “sick note”. Stats show that he’s hardly ever been injured in his career so far.

Mouko looked decent to me until the Karrangy game, even then I think it was more the pitch than him that was the problem. Looked strong.

Sorry can I just throw in another plug for the documentary on Gerry Hughes which was shown on STV last night.

For those who don’t know, Gerry is a deaf maths teacher from St Roch’s who couldn’t read or write until he was thirteen and for whom signing is essential.

Notwithstanding his difficulties his lifelong ambition was to sail singlehandedly around the world passing all 5 great capes.

The Documentary follows the trial and tribulations that befell him in achieving that ambition last year.

I don’t disagree but there is a world of difference between obnoxious policy decisions and the illegal and repugnant act of persons physically changing dozens , maybe hundreds, of statements.

You may argue, correctly, that the latter flows naturally from the former but the scale of it is still breathtaking , even in a country with the history of miscarriages of justice we have.

I meant to post at the time ( but couldn’t due to self inflicted injury ) that my own sister stays in the same estate and Stan was fondly regarded although a pretty quiet and private guy.

  16. From the BBC:

IPCC: Further 74 Hillsborough police statements ‘amended ‘

Statements of a further 74 police officers involved in the Hillsborough stadium disaster “may have been amended”, the police watchdog has said.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) said there was also evidence suggesting “fans’ witness accounts may have been altered”.

It is examining police conduct in the aftermath of the disaster.

IPCC deputy chair Deborah Glass said it needed to deliver “the last, definitive account” of the 1989 disaster.

The announcement comes a year after the Hillsborough Independent Panel first reported its findings.

The IPCC announced it would investigate after the 2012 report revealed 164 police statements had been altered.

It said 116 of those statements were changed to remove or change negative comments about the policing of the FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest.

In December, the original accidental death verdicts were quashed at the High Court and new inquests will be heard after the panel found that 41 of the 96 who died had the “potential to survive”.

New inquests into the deaths of the victims are set to begin by 31 March at an unconfirmed location in the north west.

I lived a few doors away from Paddy McCourt but you very rarely saw him. Once through the window, and once in his Range Rover at the junction with the main road.

I thought more players would have moved into my village as I’m just along the road from Lennoxtown but as yet it seems not many have.

I think we may have missed Bobo during those fifteen months

“Baldé made his first start of the 2007/08 season on 26 December 2007 exactly a year after his last appearance, in a 2–0 away win to Dundee United. His presence also helped Celtic to their first away clean sheet in almost 15 months.[19] He was awarded Man Of The Match.”

    ——————

Got to disagree my big, grey haired amigo.

Balde scared the beejeesus out of opposition forwards but often his defending had the same effect on his own supporters!!

He was rash in the tackle (Seville) and also prone to inexplicable errors in judgement (Lyon) and these are only the more high profile of his mistakes.

Bobo was blessed with incredible pace for a centre half and he utilised this to great effect, well let’s just say that he had to simply to dig himself out of holes that were usually of his own making.

I was at Tannadice on Boxing Day ’07 and was surprised as anyone else to see his name on the teamsheet. It turned out to be a stroke of genius by WGS.

United dominated large spells in the game but had opted to play two big strikers. Their tactics largely consisted of humping high balls into the Celtic penalty box.

Meat and drink for oor Bobo.

Despite their possession the Arabs rarely threatened and Balde was the significanr factor in this.

The following week Bobo was dropped again and many berated Strachan for his rotation policy. It wasn’t rotation, it was picking players for a particular purpose on a particular day.

The last part of your post may be the most pertinent.

“even in a country with the history of miscarriages of justice we have.”

We are a country which prides ourselves on being the cradle of democracy,a land where everyone is equal before the law, policing is by consent.

    Etc etc.

    Bollocks.

Screwed at every turn, have been for centuries. Being used to it doesn’t make us innured to it.

And while its always good to see the high and mighty getting their come-uppance,the situation should never arise.

If you screw up,hands up. Apologise and do your best to make it right.

I thought you were too busy for the blog these days!

I moved down here Nov 2001 and remember saying to my Dad about Bobo that he petrified the opposition more than he petrified us-but it was close!

    He grew into his role,IMO.

To only play 14 times in three seasons,at a time when our central defenders were a total shambles-remember them holding hands,ffs?!-is a lasting memory, and not a good one.

We were paying him a fortune,PL might not have been happy about that.

    Tough.

He was better than we had. Probably still better than them. He was badly let down by those in charge at the time.
