Succession at Celtic

1034

I have no doubt this morning’s press reports on Celtic’s plans for the months ahead are correct.  We are told the club “is planning an overhaul of their football operations in the summer that would see significant changes to their set-up.”  There is a great deal you can surmise from that statement.

“Overhaul… of football operations”, “significant changes”, leaves zero doubt Neil Lennon will be moving on and suggests wider changes are likely.  It is also safe to assume Neil is on-board with this and has agreed to remain in charge until the end of the season, or a suitable replacement arrives.

Neil would not go through this torture were it not out of a sense of responsibility towards the players, several of whom he personally convinced to stay for this ‘important season’.  Malicious talk of holding out for a payoff is well wide of the mark.

What is also clear is that Celtic are not happy to appoint any manager who is prepared to come to the club right now.  This precludes those out of work, or those who are not prepared to ‘Do a Brendan’ and leave their current project with trophies still to be won and lost.

The new industry is not always as helpful.  Last night reports that betting was suspended on Eddie Howe getting the job received plenty of clicks.  Eddie has his eyes on a different target and will almost certainly pick up an English Premiership job this year.  He is as likely to come to Celtic as another fantasy appointment, Mauricio Pochettino, was, before choosing Paris when he could have made his home in Glasgow.  If only it was that easy.

If we take the ‘Get real’ suggestions off the table, I know the photo fit you are working with.  Someone who has over-performed in a different environment, who is technically razor sharp and can bring knowledge of a value market.

They will have a successful track record, one that is short enough that they have not already moved up the food chain, but one longer than Ronny Deila’s mercurial rise at Stromsgodset.  We now know that the skills required to achieve one season of spectacular success is Norway does not automatically equip a manager for what on paper looks an easier task.  The Goldilocks candidate, enough of a spectacular record, but not too much that they have already got their move.

The quick fix if Neil leaves is John Kennedy as interim or someone, like Ronny, who cannot believe he’s been offered the Celtic job.  Or let Neil complete the season and attempt to add the Scottish Cup and leave his second term trophy report reading 6 out of 8.  I am not recommending either option, it’s too complicated to sit on the outside and suggest a fix with any conviction – not matter how convinced this is an easy one, it’s not.

If Neil remains until the end of the season it will not be because he needs the money, or because he deserves the respect of a Celtic hero (although he does), it is because the business of succession has to be settled.  My preference would be to spend these months doing reconnaissance; better to do it right than to do it early, but the galleries have loved a blood letting since the Colosseum, we know how it works.

  1. Griffiths unfit in July , could not go to France

Then 3 weeks later Neil said he had never seen Griffiths fitter

So of course Neil plays ajetti who runs like a 40 year old Scott McDonald

    Something fishy went on

Was Neil Forced to play ajetti and Kilmala in fromt of Griffiths Something not right

  2. Depressing article.

So we plod along as we are now, further humiliation as the hun stroll to the title, we get knocked out of the cup and limp along until May.

We unveil a Jack Ross-type appointment who has little time to get transfers and style of football pressed onto the squad, we are ill-prepared for Europe and suffer another early exit while our signings settle.

On the other hand, the hun tweak with one or two solid pros, get through the CL qualifiers and around £30m which would almost destroy any financial advantage we’ve held for a decade.

Please tell me I’m being negative and nothing like this will happen….

  3. Geebee, unfortunately it’s happening.

And on CQN, we’re subjected to the following

    “9 leagues

    4 trebles

    Unprecedented success

But toys oot the pram when all goes wrong.

Everything is cyclical, football teams win and lose..it’s not real life”

As though results going back a decade somehow prevent us from being concerned in the here and now. That we should accept a single season turnaround which could be close on 30 points.

We should always strive for success. We wont always achieve it and will often be bested by a genuinely better opponent.

However, our performance over the past 18 months has been unforgivable

We were called pantywetters when we predicted a downturn. We’re now called negatrons, tadgers or huns when the downturn is all too apparent.

The Celtic board need to act decisively to arrest our descent.

The next 3 seasons are now up for grabs

We need a clear out now while the players still have some value, if they don’t want to be here then get rid as soon as so we know what we need. We need the incoming manager to start bringing players in or at least to have deals lined up. The manager needs time to stamp his philosophy, tactics and style on the club and first team, for a whole new coaching, sports science and analytics team to be brought in and embedded into the football operation.

The past couple of years has been an absolute shambles. People have been pointing out the dangers for years now and nobody in a position of power did so much as raised an eyebrow. There his been gross negligence from the board down.

    #######

Nail hit firmly on head pal . Tiny Tim also has it nailed with regards to nick Hammond , most of his recommendations haven’t been too clever . But for me anyway is the interference of peter lawell . He should have no impact on team matters , No decent manager is going to come to Celtic and be undermined by this character . We have already lost a great manager through his interference. And you know what he won’t stop interfering , he has been let go too far , the guy is power drunk .

I believe he knows his job , just wish he would stick to it . Thank god he wasn’t around when big jock was offered the Celtic job . He made it plain from day one who was team boss . HH

    ================================

    Ernie

Res 12 is a shareholder issue

Dermot is Celtics largest shareholder circa 40%

    Peter shareholding is approx 1%

Peter is a paid employee of majority shareholder.

Your a sharp guy at times Ernie

Peter can only do the bidding and go in the direction of,and take the club in the said majority shareholder.

Now squeal all you like at every turn it is

Dermot who is rejecting res 12.

Dermot is not sanctioning any comment on above ie LNS fix etc thats why no push will be made without his support ever….

Word from the Board is ‘they are rangers now’

PL is the day to day guy with Celtic

Anything pertaining to comment via his shareholding(just like in his booki shareholding and actions)is most definetly

  18. Football is cyclical. We don’t have a divine right to win all the time.

However, when the decline has been sudden, humiliating, potentially long-lasting and so utterly avoidable I don’t begrudge any Celtic fan from being massively frustrated. Doesn’t make them any less of a fan.
