The greatest save, fighting the urge, goodness – a masterstroke

459

Space inside the box when you have the ball at your feet is at premium and whatever you have, closes quickly.  The ancient part of our brains kicks in at this point.  We become alert to the dangers of the shrinking space.

This reaction is biologically evidenced.  The associated rush of adrenaline flushes the muscles with energy but it also obscures peripheral vision.  You will know this yourself if you’ve been in possession of a football for as much as a second with defenders closing a loop around you.  This is why, from the stands, we can often see a pass, but the player in possession fires off a shot that is easily blocked.

Watch Odsonne Edouard before he passes to Ryan Christie for the equaliser.  Running towards goal with the ball, he has to fight against all of these biological factors to suppress the urge to panic into a premature shot.

His presence in the box induces the same adrenaline rush in the Lazio defenders’ brains and limbs: they focus on Odsonne, but the Celtic striker is winning the fight against nature.  He maintains enough peripheral vision to spot the slenderest gap at 90 degrees to his right.  Ryan Christie is in space and while all others panic, Odsonne pings a pass into Ryan’s path.

You can give players all the benefits sports science allows, train them until they are built like supermen, but the game is played in the mind.  That ability to defy the natural instinct and control your body is where greatness lives.

I was troubled at halftime.  Celtic did not deserve to be behind but Lazio scored an excellent goal and were clearly a very good team, while Cluj were ahead in Rennes, the result we did not want.  The opening 15 minutes of the second half were controlled by the visitors, with Celtic unable to hold possession.

We needed energy from somewhere and Ryan Christie stepped forward.  He covers 20 yards with great speed and regularity.  His run to the corner around the hour, which created our first chance of the second half, looked like he was propelled forward in a pinball machine.  His sprint forward, drop back, then repeat action, change the flow of the game.

It is not just Celtic who seldom score from corner kicks, such goals are the Hen’s Teeth of the modern game.  Defenders mark the main threats, while others attack the space most likely to produce a goal.  With the inevitable numerical defensive overload and set plays video analysed to within an inch of indecency, corners are the football equivalent of a Brexit deadlock.

But still, when Scott Brown’s shot from outside the box was deflected wide with two minutes remaining, we could dream. Christopher Jullien is as commanding in the air as any Celtic player since Bobo Balde.  His sheer upper body bulk make a challenge from lesser mortals futile.  His leap and glancing header inside the far post were like a great cruise liner gracefully launching down the slip.  We were going to win this, or so we thought.

Fraser Forster had already made an incredible block with the score at 1-1, but in the final minute of added time, his leap to stop the unstoppable volley from Cataldi was the best save I have ever seen.

Crowds react to great save with cheers, or applause on lesser occasions.  This save was met with an audible gasp.  Shock from the ancient part of our brains was articulated an instant before the subsequent joy, not to mention respect.  We were not to be denied.

When Hatem Elhamed went down injured inside the last 10 minutes, Moritz Bauer, a straight replacement at right back, was told to get stripped, but Neil Lennon quickly changed his mind.  Instead, there was an Israeli shuffle, with Nir Bitton replacing Elhamed.  Celtic went to a back three and two minutes later, Neil replaced Boli Bolingoli with Jonny Hayes.  Coming so late in the game, Lazio had no time to react; Celtic were setup to control the middle of the park.

Goodness.  In the dying minutes of a game against the top seed with the score at 1-1, we change tactical formation, going three at the back against two strikers.  You have to hand it to Neil Lennon.  Without this change, Scott Brown is nowhere near the Lazio box to be able to latch onto a loose ball and shoot to secure the corner that produced the winning goal.

It was an absolute masterstroke.  Well done, boss.

For most of us, our days are full of small joys and trials.  Spontaneous, shared, exhilaration is in rare supply.  But, here we are.

  1. David 66,

You have misquoted me, and with respect I ask you to read the post again.

I blame nobody, especially the resolutioners who I have repeatedly praised on here.

A few weeks ago after the Livingston game I posted about a very intelligent ghirl who is Russell group university educated. She has a very responsible managerial job and attends Celtic games home and away.

She had never heard of Res 12 and when we explained she wasn’t really that interested.

She was far more interested about a winning team on the park.

    HH.

  2. Here’s the thing.

When finally it aw becomes ooor “fault”and the Big Picture is lost, scoddland will awaken to the issue gorging on Celtica and the real kulprit will escape again – scot free.

The furore will engulf everything about us and bearly skorch the hun neck (again).

Result : hun, home win ( as a result of yet more dodgy decision-making)

What is it we all want, ultimately?

    Fix Fitba’ Empty Hampden.

  3. In ither news……………….

    King Kenny?

My first real heartbreak borne of Celtica.

I cried when he left us,………… for different reasons now, he still breaks my Celtic heart.

I hope it’s clear that I am 100% behind the Res 12 Bhoys … just in case when you say you agree with me it’s about the majority of (in my opinion) the Celtic support don’t have much of an appetite in calling out the SFA cheating over the football administration of the Huns … again (my opinion) most Celtic fans now just think the SFA cheating is the norm …

On the actual fitba looking forward to seeing what 11 starters Neil picks today obviously no Ryan today wonder if El Hatem isn’t 100% does Jack (Bauer) get the nod or young Frimpong … who knows

  5. MM – I hope Paddy keeps fighting and beats this, whatever it is, it sounds horrible.

    King Kenny my erse.

  6. DAVID66 @ 6:58 AM,

Thanks but you said it, the Board should have been shoulder to shoulder with the fans…

… so GREENPINATA @ 8:02 AM, surly what David66 says is key, some Russel University type might only take an interest if the Board made it an issue, which they were obliged to do. Highlight the malfeasance and say – up with this we will not put.

Isn’t that the whole point? They did not do that and now we can see they weren’t even neutral, they were in with the SFA establishment, facilitating their dodgy deals and distracting Celtic-minded fholk who were railing against the corruption.

    MELBOURNE MICK @ 7:48 AM,

Thanks, read about your mate Paddymacoz… hooe he’s better soon, my thoughts and prayers are with him and the other CQNers in ill health.

  7. Educate the masses? I would love to see at the next home game a huge GB banner saying something like ‘Support Res. 12’ At the same game 60k flyers handed out with the succinct points.

  8. Res12 Betrayed! – “The Board recommends that you vote against this resolution” | The Celtic Star https://thecelticstar.com/res12-betrayed-the-board-recommends-that-you-vote-against-this-resolution/#.XbQkT1Eevlk.twitter

I remember back in the day I was roasted on here by certain individuals and I was told to give the club time and they’ll deal with it appropriately.

I also said in 2012,13,14,15,16,17,18 if you allow cheats to get away with it they’ll continue to get away with it for years because my club the biggest in this country remains silent.

Guess what they’ve just f**ked us all over and the ones on here that backed the board should hang their heads in shame.

You were warned our board were up to no good and were Complicit in corruption since 2012 but oh no not our board.

Give us yer money that’s all they’re interested in, they are just as bad as that charlatan at greyskull DK.

Ask yourself this. DK purchased the Charlotte Fakes data what does he have on certain individuals within Celtic ?

A few messages from our fans on twitter below.

    @magic_bhoy

CFC board only engaged in here and now. Historical fraud is not in their plans, they couldn’t give a f*ck about fans or minor shareholders forking out into a bent game. I wonder how this could be viewed in future lean times of success?

They may take view pursuing this matter will be a cost not worth taking. The here and now approach. Unfortunately, they have office bearing duties and if CFC have been victims of a multi million pound fraud, why would they sit silent resisting shareholder pressure? Questions….

CFC board laid bare. Scandal. https://twitter.com/videocelts/status/1188044551447031809

Office bearers can be reported for failing to protect company. Lawwell and his puppets are square in line of this failure.

I’m saying they can be reported which I will be doing now I know they are actively against pursuing Res12. Suspicion is CFC board knew fine well about RFC license application chicanery.

Unseen leverage to shareholders is ultimately baseless. CFC board are actively against CFC achieving redress from a criminal fraud. This is seriously f***ed up and office bearing duties have surely to be called into question?

@TheClumpany Lawwell ignoring a criminal fraud against company he’s appointed to look after yet trousering £3m a year will account for some part of CFC expenditure. Lawwell should play professional poker…

    From @theclumpany

The board says that the matter is with the SFA. They should be challenged to explain what they hope the SFA will decide and what they will do if it takes a different view. Sadly of course the AGM format restricts who can ask questions and who can then ask any permitted follow ups https://twitter.com/videocelts/status/1188044551447031809

[And naturally the major shareholders – as is their right – can vote down the resolution, but it would be good if the board could finally do the fans the courtesy of being publicly frank about his issue]

Given @CQN’s previous robust support for the #Res12 campaign when it was taken into the European press, I am really looking forward to seeing Paul’s opinion on the Resolution 12 issue being voted down on the recommendation of the board.

At the most basic and mercenary level I would love to know how the Celtic board decides to publicly write off the club potentially being denied a route to £ms in the Champions League in 2011-12. https://twitter.com/PATFLA71/status/1188243821039161344

They need to be asked how the governance of Scottish football can be trusted not to wrongly deprive Celtic of Champions League football in the future, and what steps they propose to take to guard against it… https://twitter.com/TheClumpany/status/1188245347501518850

All we need now is the main man to appear and explain the rules to us and tell us how everything is going to be alright and our board are not like that.

What was it he told us all in 2012?

Infinite patience leads to infinite results 👍

  9. That itself would give PL & DD something to think about.

A protest at a given moment wouldn’t go amiss either. Like turning your back to the directors box.

  10. If you allow cheats to do it they’ll continue to do it.

Jim Farry a prime example and now they’re continuing to cheat and helping RFC cheat.

Celtic Football Club should be calling this out and demanding the SFA are not fit for purpose and all clubs should be showing a vote of no confidence.

CFC complicit in corruption since 2012.

  11. It surely can’t be long now and a new article will be posted on here.

I honestly can’t think why a new article would be posted though can you?

    Hmmm

I was ine if those guys, my deepest apologies. My views were sincerely held at the time, I did not believe for one moment the Celtic Board would be in on it.

    Hail Hail

  13. CHAIRBHOY on 27TH OCTOBER 2019 8:49 AM

No worries mate. Tbh I’m not wanting apologies all I wanted and still want is for Justice and for our board to do the right thing because if it was us doing the cheating RFC fans and the club would demand we’re dealt with accordingly.

If those at our club don’t wont deal with fraud then perhaps it should be taken out of their hands in what magic_bhoy said earlier on one of the posts.

  14. Hi Bhoys

Watching match of the day. The chelsea game has at least 2 maybe 3 deflected goals in it credited to the striker none of the goals on the goal line like Eddies against Ross County. Then the southampton game the defender bertrand I think sent off for a tackle almost a mirror image of the one on Calum against Lazio. Oh for referees and var like this in our games.

    KEEP THE FAITH

  15. Good morning, friends from a mostly clear skied, dry and bright East Kilbride. And just 2 hours till kick off!

    Enjoy your day fellow Celts

A wee 3pts would be good, listening to Neil Lennon there will be maximum 3 changes today (obviously Ryan enforced change) but Neil actually pointed out NOT making changes for the Livvy game was a contributing fact to losing (his words not mine :-)

  18. BROGAN ROGAN TREVINO AND HOGAN on

    Morning All.

BIG GEORGES FAN CLUB – HAIL, HAIL, WEE OSCAR on 27TH OCTOBER 2019 1:29 AM

BGFC – With regard to your post there is no need to complicate things at this moment in terms of examining the detailed evidence or that hunt for the silver bullet.

The simple fact of the matter is that the SFA investigated and actually did bring criminal charges and those charges are alive and kicking and in existence today.

However, it would appear that then then CEO (Reagan) and the then corporate compliance officer (McKinlay) should have known, or possibly did know, that any attempt to hold a hearing to consider the charges was incompetent and unlawful.

Even the SFA seem to have accepted that there was enough evidence to bring charges – and so anyone else still looking for evidence (whether that be members of our board or anyone else) hasn’t grasped the point that the Governing body of Scottish Football has already accepted that there is sufficient evidence already in existence and to the fore.

What does have to be asked is just how competent have the SFA been over the last 7 years if it is the case that they have entered into an agreement which effectively says that the SFA rules and the UEFA rules don’t apply in certain circumstances and that the SFA cannot conduct its normal disciplinary process in respect of those rules in relation to one club.

Surely, that is a matter of concern and indeed public interest.

Does this mean, as it might, that the whole judicial function of the SFA has been, and continues to be, so flawed that every club within the organisation can challenge every set of charges brought by the SFA in future which makes a mockery of the whole organisation?

Or does it mean that in terms of the 5 way agreement the SFA – wittingly or unwittingly – entered into an agreement which effectively meant that all clubs in Scotland would be bound by a set of rules with the exception of RFC who, the SFA agreed, could not be prosecuted in the same way as everyone else?

If it is the latter case, then just what was the point of Reagan writing to all clubs to announce and explain an internal inquiry after the Craig Whyte trial, and then proceeding with charges which you knew all along could not be prosecuted before a judicial panel appointed by the same people?

Forget the evidence for the moment, the process that has been followed by the SFA here is absolutely astonishing and it is no wonder that all the SFA officers concerned have moved on to other jobs because in any other organisation they would have been fired for gross incompetency.

The board of Celtic PLC were in direct contact with Reagan and Andrew McKinlay about these issues over a number of years. Celtic always said “leave it to the SFA” or that “The SFA are dealing with it” but at the time of writing it is the opinion of a judge and two wing men that the SFA’s procedures are legally incompetent and, despite a formal recommendation to refer the matter to CAS, for the last 18 months or so the SFA themselves have admitted they have done nothing and might well do nothing in the future – despite bringing charges that the rules were broken based on the evidence they themselves collated!

The point of the resolution is to highlight the fact that there are currently two clear cut opinions on Governance and procedure.

The Resolutioners have always said that they have no faith in the SFA being a professionally run and competent body to deal with this because back in 2011/2012 (irrespective of what anyone else might have done or said) the SFA themselves were so completely hopeless at administering the licensing process that any investigation would have to conclude that they had made a total arse oif the UEFA rules.

In fact at one point Reagan wrote to Peter Lawwell and said that once the licence had been granted the whole affair was nothing more to do with the SFA and that UEFA did all the monitoring only for UEFA themselves to write separately and effectively state that was nonsense.

The SFA had no idea what it was about and we have always said someone else (UEFA) should be looking at this.

Celtic PLC took the alternative view that the SFA were the correct people to investigate, ensure compliance and to enforce the rules if they have been broken.

With the very greatest respect to the board – how on earth can they still say that when even the very process of bringing charges has been deemed legally incompetent by a judicial panel and for a subsequent period of 18 months the SFA have said that they don’t know what to do next but they will hopefully make a decision by Christmas!

This is an organisation which is legally and administratively clueless. It is incompetent and not fit for purpose beyond all measure. It cannot apply its own rules, let alone those of UEFA, in its own jurisdiction.

It risks making such a horse’s arse of interpreting the UEFA rules that even a referral to CAS could result in a CAS ruling which could bind all other UEFA associated football associations in future – and if it makes a referral to CAS without informing and including UEFA – we could find that the Court of Arbitration for Sport considers the terms of, and makes a ruling on, UEFA rules and administration without UEFA being present or consulted on what their rules were intended to achieve.

A greater footballing cock up is hard to imagine and, for whatever reason, the board of Celtic PLC want to continue to align themselves with such blistering incompetence for reasons which have yet to be explained.

I think it was Chairboy who asked if Celtic should be asked to set out their reasons for maintaining faith with the SFA and I agree that is something that should be done.

How are you me oul china?

I am off to Rome for the Lazio game and will be eating and drinking down the Via Condotti with the likes of Blantyretim.

Definitely for a wee visit to https://www.anticabirreriaperoni.net/

Anyway, on Nicky Morgan MP — hmmmmm

I have spent that last two years attempting to bring the Directors of Lloyds Banking Group to heel in terms of their treatment of the HBOS Reading Fraud victims and have had some success in getting money out of the buggers but that fight is ongoing and will hopefully take a significant turn or two for the better when one of the current semi parliamentary reviews reports on the competency of the bank’s approach to the victims and compensation.

I mention this because I have spent a considerable amount of time in Westminster giving evidence to these reviews and dealing with MP’s of all parties with a view to getting the bank — who are a thoroughly horrible disgusting and, to be frank, completely crooked organisation, — to stop covering up their tracks, denying a massive fraud, and treating the victims like shit.

In the course of all that when Nicky Morgan was chair of the treasury select committee, and before that secretary to the treasury, she made some helpful noises but had a tendency to disappear into the politics of the situation when the bank lobbyists started flexing their wings.

That muscle was not sufficient though to derail the cross party support for bank victims and so the big guys don’t always get their way.

However, there may well be parliamentary interest in this so will give that a bit of thought.

    Cheers.

Not a great time to be heading up to the ewe camp ( luv that one )

for our support, but for us here in Oz it’s perfect as the game is late

night and not early morning usually 3 or 4.

My 11 o’clock feast is made up, Cornish pastie, soft pastry in case i

have a meltdown and the big screen gets panned in a moment of

madness, thats if i get a picture on CTV of course.

But i know i can rely on you ghuys for the updates anyways.

So what do i expect, well i’m thinking our bhoys will be brimming

with confidence after the Nazio game so a comfortable victory by

at least three is my tip.

    So COYBIG.

    H.H . Mick

Frimpong & Rogic … only changes from Thursday looks like Neil will only change two, maximum 3 after Euro Thursdays … and will definitely not keep same 11 again (his words not mine :-)
