The language of defeat, crowd-sourced media management

1075

Speaking at the weekend, Kenny McDowell looked ahead to the cup semi-final saying “We aren’t going into the game fearing a big defeat.  If anything we are going into the game knowing we’ll have to be on our guard and wary of that, but we are not going into it fearing of losing by a big score-line”.

Admitting that he’s wary about the prospect of a big defeat is the last thing you want your manager to say publicly as you prepare for a cup tie.  It conditions everyone to the prospect of defeat.

From Ronny, it’s all positive: “It’s going to be fun.

“It’s good that this is a big game, so we won’t be underestimating the opponent.

“We are in a good position, we can win everything and that motivates.”

Big games, big results, are often won in the head before a team takes to the field.  You win because you know you’re going to win, because you know you can rely on your team-mates.  You know that if you do your job correctly, there is nothing the opposition can do, short of elbowing you in the face and hope you retaliate.

No game of football is easy and Ronny and the players will know they will have to work for anything they get on Sunday, but the preparatory work has been done.  The players are fit, rested and can’t wait for Sunday.

On a side note, I can’t believe how thoroughly the New Club advert has penetrated media coverage this week.  On top of Motivator McDowell, can you imagine ‘ex-players’, pundits and fans having to explain their existence and relevance in the run up to a semi-final?  This wasn’t a crowd-source advert, it was crowd-sourced media management, which ran rings around the best paid PRs in the business.

Let me know (celticquicknews@gmail.com) if you want a ticket to CQN 11 St Patrick’s Dinner at the Kerrydale Suite on Friday 13 March – Cup Final weekend, as it happens, or you can buy a ticket at the bottom of this page.  I’m in the mood now.

I think oor Rony is in for a shock on Sunday I doubt if he has ever been involved in a game which has the potential to turn out really ugly both on the field and off it.This is the time for John Collins to earn his corn and ensure no one at Celtic is left in any doubt what it takes to beat this mob. H.H.

  4. i dont care who we play but ANY team playing with 11 men behind the ball is very difficult to break down. The longer the game goes on at 0-0 the more frustrated we become and the more chance of thems sneaking a winner. Forget high scoring game unless we score early and drag them out their defensive cage. They are a team who play better on the break.

Bottom line on Sunday is to win, sure there is pressure on RD but its negligible. We have far better players, are fitter and if we go by Ronnie’s theory of pace and tempo there should be no worry’s. No excuses Celtic, just go out and play them off the park. We’ll soon see how much they’re looking forward to their next ‘old firm’ fixture.

  7. Regarding the ad.which i thought was brilliant, the best thing about it (apart from noising up the huns) was calling out the SMSM on their position ..we all can read back on articles from 2012 stating they had died, smith has said it, findlay has said it, even there goto guy Chris grahem said it…so whats changed, simple, the Smsm’s need to keep the o/f nonsense going to justify their own existence(James Forrest wrote on this)…

  8. Kim can do anything she likes…..an awfy braw lass…..that could be the man from Dunblanes best ever match …..love all……

I’ve watched the Huns being humped by QOS,Hibs twice and Hearts

I’ve watched Alloa claw back a two goal deficit by scoring three goals in 20 mins

The Huns are dross ..slow,old and talentless …they struggle against run of the mill Div1 sides

CFC playing reasonably well should smash them

  12. The huns will play 4-5-1..to stop our fullbacks coming forward…making us play in the middle of the park where the will have 3 law black and somebody else who can kick…its the cardigans goto battle plan….

  13. I know i will look back in a few years and be proud of the (very small) part i played in gettin the ad in a national newspaper

We caused a stir and people will remember it for years to come when they talk about the death of Rangers 1872

    B-)

  14. “Spot on, Hibs totally annihilated them, no reason why we cant do the same”

East Fife destroyed morton and then we couldn’t.

I agree that if we play even close to our best we will pump them, even with any mibber. But I wouldn’t rule out a tight stuffy game

    —————————————

Not quite as simple as that. me and my Bhoy have season tickets. On January 5th (I think) season ticket holders were given the opportunity to buy 2 further tickets each. So we ended up with 6 between us. Which is why my other son and daughter and my Bhoys girlfriend and her mother are all now going along ;-)

Looks like the Milan game is a sell out. Trying to get tickets for a Polish mate and myself. If anybody can help, I would be most grateful.
