Unacceptable conduct’s interesting consequence

674

We had an interesting couple of announcements from the Scottish Premier League yesterday.  Safe Standing areas, where instead of a seat, spectators have a crush barrier in front of them, is no longer against league rules.  Before the introduction of standing areas council Health and Safety officials would need to give approval, as do the police.  Council approval should be straightforward, crush barriers separating each row of spectators make the environment safe, but I’m less sure the police will be keen.

Policing huge stadiums with seated spectators is straightforward compared to policing standing fans.  Disturbances tend to cause those involved to stand up, drawing immediate attention to the incident, while knowing exactly who is sitting on which seat would allow transgressors of the Scottish Governments new interpretation on making the sign of the cross to be pursued after the event.

League rules (note: not the law of the land) have also been updated to clarify the definition of “Unacceptable Conduct” as ‘using words, conduct or displaying any writing or other thing which indicates support for, or affiliation to, or celebration of, or opposition to an organisation proscribed in terms of  the Terrorism Act 2000’.

New rules on how clubs are expected to tackle Unacceptable Conduct, with fresh procedures, if necessary, have also been introduced.  Clubs are now required to bring occurrences of Unacceptable Conduct to the Match Commander.  Failure to do so will bring the club into breach, should an incident subsequently be reported, by TV spectators, for example.

Clubs are also charged to “Take reasonably practical steps, including consultation with police, to identify those who engage in Unacceptable Conduct”, which creates obvious dissonance with the new Safe Standing Area policy.

We’ll see how these rules work out in practice but look out for an interesting consequence.  Some Celtic fans are often cited as singing about the IRA (who are on the Proscribed list in their various historical formats) but they are not the supporters who sing most about that organisation(s).  That ‘honour’ falls to Rangers fans, who are bound not to sing in “opposition to an organisation proscribed”.

The notion that Rangers (and let’s not forget Hearts) are compelled to identify and sanction any of their supporters caught “effin’ the IRA” in fear any TV viewer reports them is what keeps this country unique.

Box clever.

  1. Are we being SET UP?

    By Joratim.

Over recent weeks I have with the exception of doing one article, have just posted comments. Only made those posts where I found some excellent articles, not just from Winner, but also from some of our regulars and also new writers.

All of those have taken the HUB to an even higher level.  I have also posted to call into question some of those who call themselves Celts, but in my opinion have failed to answer the call.

Reason for saying this, when I or some of the others have put valid questions as to their loyalty, they quickly disappear.  Don’t have to take my word for this, check the HUB archives.

Using this as a starting point, would like to give consideration to several issues.

We are now approaching the end of the year, think we are going into the New Year with new hope, but we have issues to address.

Will begin with the Poppy protest a season or so ago, this was possibly the event which brought the Green Brigade into not just the focus of fans like ourselves, but also brought them national status.

At that time, I made it clear that in my opinion, it was not the best thing to do.  Pointed out that although I would never wear or buy a poppy myself, respected the right of anyone else to do so.  Always bearing in mind the number of Celtic players who fought and died during those capitalist wars, always remembering that per capita, there were more young men from the Republic wore the British uniform than those from the occupied 6 counties.  Main reason for this being the fact that they had to find some means of livelihood, as they had had been the victims and the oppressed of British Imperialism.   Forced through hunger and want to find a means of providing for those they left behind.

Please people, let that incident be left to rest, always respect the rights of others, always remind yourselves if you do not give respect, you are not entitled to receive respect.

Will come now to my next point, i.e. The Green Brigade:

These people have during their short tenure as a group, have brought back a long lost atmosphere to Celtic Park, something that had been missing for a number of years, good on them and long may they be part of all that we love.

(wee  point, just an opinion, thought atmosphere began to die out when we all had to sit down, happiest times of my life were in the old Jungle, just an aside).

However, this being said, once again I must repeat something I spoke about several months past.  Concerned about the jumping up and down, concerned about “lets all do the huddle”.  Great to watch, inspirational, but worrying.  Only needs one person to fall, disaster could then follow.

Saying this not in condemnation, but as a former convenor in the yards.  Thinking about how we had to battle the management to get safety equipment, goggles, steel toe capped boots, proper washing up facilities, etc.  We won these battles, and even though the Thatcherite Cameron is vent on destroying the health and safety now in place, we have a duty to ensure that what was won will remain in place.

Hope this is accepted in the spirit in which it is given.  Let no one in Celtic Park be a victim of over exuberance, if one person is injured, we are all injured.

The other day, our administrator published the article re the behaviour at Udinese, the stupid banner, the flares and assault on one of or own stewards.  The proof of his abilities was shown by the responses.  In the history of Celtic Cyberspace, the number of posts must be among the highest ever recorded.

Why was this?  Easy answer, he told it as it was, he made it clear that those responsible, even though they may think they are clever and funny, done nothing for our club other than to bring it into disrepute and cause further charges to be brought against us.  Even worse is the fact that the real supporter’s great name and image throughout the world has been tarnished.

The bigoted Scottish Media had an early Christmas and will be partying on this for months.

Time for these people to go, and bear in mind that Lawell himself pointed out that is not an action of the Green Brigade.

Terrible thing to think about how only 8 years ago, we were recognised as the greatest supporters in world football and now being thrown into the gutter by the actions of an irresponsible minority.

Just wanted to let my feelings on these issues be known, always honest when I have a point to make.

    Back now to my headline:

“Are We Being Set Up” ?

Referring of course to the late kick off next week against the unmentionables.  Very few people will be at work between Christmas and New Year.  Forget TV rights and payments.  This game should not be allowed to take place at this late hour. Should be an early Kick Off

Let’s not kid ourselves, we are going to have a majority in that crowd who have been bevvying most of the day.  Drink causes problems:

The vast majority of those at the game will be our people.  What an opportunity for the forces of law and order to move in.  What an opportunity to give proof to those who passed the recent stupid law to do as they promised, i.e. level up the number of Celts charged as opposed to the well known fact that the others have had by far the  majority of hate crimes prove.

Would pose this question, had the game been at the devil’s den, would Strathclyde’s Finest allowed the game to be played at that time.  Don’t think so.

That is set up number one.

    Number two:

    Willie Collum.

Of all the referees in Scotland, there is no person more anti Celtic than him.

Go back to his nonsense last year at I—x, done a piece on him, so hard, that Daniel could not publish after seeking legal advice, quite rightly by the way, could have caused slander problems.  Would not now as I have the evidence to back up my claims.  However that is in the past.

My point now is that despite having been given so few games this season, due to his incompetence, the SPL have thrown him into this cauldron on 2 counts.

    1)      Knowing that the others are having problems, he is the most obvious to help them out

    2)      If things go pear shaped, he is an easy scapegoat, just stop giving him games.

I am in no doubt that the authorities, both civil and football are trying to set us up for a fall next week.

Bit of advice, no Bevvy, be like those who gave us pride in Seville, and give them nothing to condemn us.

The team is getting better, all we need is a level playing field, a fair crack of the whip, and then we can celebrate.

Happy festive time to all ( other than those in South West Glasgow)

I have been asked to comment on the “rumours” of a £5m deal having been concluded.

Firstly, the source article is ignorant tosh written by someone with little knowledge of these matters. Aside from not actually being able to spell the word ‘precedent’, regular readers will know that the First Tier Tribunal does not carry the weight of precedent. (It can be influential, but a decision must have made it to the Upper Tribunal before any precedent would apply).

In Rangers case, what they have done (per the leaks to Darrell King from Rangers where he says that they had side agreements for players saying loans from the EBT were not to be repaid) is so far over the line and so unusual that there is little chance that any precedent would come out of this case any way.

Next- a deal? No. Knives are getting sharpened not beaten into ploughshares. Given Mr. Whyte’s personal history of tax delinquency (as reported in the media), Rangers’ decade long record of flouting tax law, and their recent record of not passing along the taxes they are deducting from salaries, I think that it would be fair to describe the current environment as not being conducive towards a “sweetheart” deal.

And on top of all that, a certain Mr. Hartnett has been getting it tough in recent days (not always fairly it must be said- the media are not bathing themselves in accuracy on that story), the current mood would not be one for a high profile surrender.

Rangers and Whyte combined represent the model of the tax delinquent wide boy. I can only imagine that there is quite some determination to ensure that they are not seen to get away with it.

I’m very sorry but I disagree entirely, to mention the Celtic Support as in some way at fault because the Rangers Support have continuously sang Sectarian songs, brings the meaning of wrong, to an entirely new level. (trendy cliche)

Au contraire, the fact that they weren’t brought to book by the Celtic Board and the establishment earlier, has helped contribute to the entire sorry mess, where they are trying to rewrite the legislation including the changing of dictionary definition for the word sectarian.

This equivalence, we now have is because Rangers were convicted for sectarian singing by UEFA, and for that fact alone. They cannot challenge a 15,000 chorus singing deeply racist songs as far back as 31/08/08, but PC plod can pull a single wee Celtic fan out of his bed because he shouted Ooh Ahh,

Cliftonville striker Rory Donnelly is expected to have talks with Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish on Tuesday about a possible move to the Anfield giants.

Dalglish contacted the the Irish League club on Sunday to register his interest in the prolific 19-year-old.

Cliftonville have accepted an offer of around £100,000 from Swansea for Donnelly while the player has also been linked with Everton.

“We’ve registered our interest, that’s as far as it goes,” Dalglish said.

The Belfast club want Donnelly’s future to be sorted out before Christmas.

Donnelly has already met with Swansea boss Brendan Rodgers and Everton manager David Moyes.

Rodgers said on Monday that he was confident of signing the Northern Ireland Under-21 international.

    from the Celtic Trust webpage…

“There are 29,000 individual shareholders in Celtic PLC and less than 2000 of them ever cast their vote.”

    Response this morning from Jeanette….

    ….

    Dear TC

Your email reads a bit like an exam question but I’ll give it a go anyway! What this means is that we use our position as shareholders to get resolutions on to the PLC AGM Agenda so that there can be a wider discussion on issues which we think are of interest to fans, and then we vote our own shares and the shares which our members proxy to us during the AGM in a way which we have previously decided is in the best interest of the Club and the supporters (as well as encouraging non-members to cast their votes in the same way.).

If what you actually mean is what resolutions have we put forward/supported, then these are fairly well-known: we have tried to encourage Celtic for the past two years to instigate a broader discussion, outwith the AGM, with all the representative fan bodies on the best way forward for Celtic, with particular focus on how the talents and enthusiasm in the support can be best harnessed in the interests of the football club; we put forward the resolution on the dividend reinvestments scheme which was voted down by the Board but subsequently adopted; we put forward the resolution on a regular charity match which was voted down by the Board but subsequently adopted. We also put forward the idea of a safe standing area, an idea which the club took forward but because they did not let us know they were doing this we put a resolution on it to the last AGM – when they informed us in the period leading up to the AGM where they were with the plan, we withdrew the resolution on the day because they were already doing it.

    Hope this helps

    Best wishes

  19. On the subject of songs. Can singing Sean South or the Broad black brimmer land one if trouble with PC Mcplod or indeed land Celtic PLC in bother with the SPL /SFA? Does a song have to mention an organisation proscribed under the TPOT act or does mere inference that the song is about members of an organisation proscribed by the British liable to land one in bother? Oh and for the little Scotlanders on line i am in no way advocating that anyone should sing songs that are likely to offend the oh so sensitive members of our support or indeed the even more sensitive Scottish public at large.

This is their response.

    ——————————————————–

    Dear Mort,

Please note that in relation to your enquiry below, Strathclyde Police will not produce a banned song list, as innocent songs can be adapted by the inclusion of certain words or phrases, however what police will do is inform supporters associations and clubs of current case law or procurator fiscal advice around particular songs, phrases or chants. Current case law is published by the Crown and advice regarding particular words or phrases is given verbally by the Football Liaison Prosecutors, who frequently attend fixtures.

If songs are sung in support of a proscribed paramilitary organisations, within a football stadium, then a charge of Breach of the Peace may be libelled.

The Lord Advocates Guidelines for incidents during sporting events can be obtained via the internet.

The current issues around supporters singing certain songs which are deemed as unacceptable has received significant media attention recently and many public figures including those within Strathclyde Police have asked supporters to focus on songs regarding football, which are not offensive and which best reflect their club. Ultimately, it is hoped that supporters groups influence the songs which are sung, thus preventing the need for police or football authority intervention.

I hope this information is helpful.
