Unacceptable conduct’s interesting consequence

674

We had an interesting couple of announcements from the Scottish Premier League yesterday.  Safe Standing areas, where instead of a seat, spectators have a crush barrier in front of them, is no longer against league rules.  Before the introduction of standing areas council Health and Safety officials would need to give approval, as do the police.  Council approval should be straightforward, crush barriers separating each row of spectators make the environment safe, but I’m less sure the police will be keen.

Policing huge stadiums with seated spectators is straightforward compared to policing standing fans.  Disturbances tend to cause those involved to stand up, drawing immediate attention to the incident, while knowing exactly who is sitting on which seat would allow transgressors of the Scottish Governments new interpretation on making the sign of the cross to be pursued after the event.

League rules (note: not the law of the land) have also been updated to clarify the definition of “Unacceptable Conduct” as ‘using words, conduct or displaying any writing or other thing which indicates support for, or affiliation to, or celebration of, or opposition to an organisation proscribed in terms of  the Terrorism Act 2000’.

New rules on how clubs are expected to tackle Unacceptable Conduct, with fresh procedures, if necessary, have also been introduced.  Clubs are now required to bring occurrences of Unacceptable Conduct to the Match Commander.  Failure to do so will bring the club into breach, should an incident subsequently be reported, by TV spectators, for example.

Clubs are also charged to “Take reasonably practical steps, including consultation with police, to identify those who engage in Unacceptable Conduct”, which creates obvious dissonance with the new Safe Standing Area policy.

We’ll see how these rules work out in practice but look out for an interesting consequence.  Some Celtic fans are often cited as singing about the IRA (who are on the Proscribed list in their various historical formats) but they are not the supporters who sing most about that organisation(s).  That ‘honour’ falls to Rangers fans, who are bound not to sing in “opposition to an organisation proscribed”.

The notion that Rangers (and let’s not forget Hearts) are compelled to identify and sanction any of their supporters caught “effin’ the IRA” in fear any TV viewer reports them is what keeps this country unique.

Box clever.

It is not in the taxmans favour for huns so go in2 admin cos they will get nothing not a penny. so he said (the caller) that its within the tax mans favour because he has in his job to take care of the queens money(that wasnt his exact words) so it would be to everyones benefit for a deal to be made. And D king said thats what he thinks is happening and that they are in the middle of doing it now but he is not sure.

    Ok ya hun :)))

The point I was trying to make is that part, only part mind, of your post is dangerous in that it follows hun logic that the Celtic support are responsible for the new legislation because we had the audacity to question the bigotry of their song book.

  3. BBC news tonight had an item where journalists were being tested on their knowledge of the laws of the game.

As an illustration, I suppose, of the difficulties they face, the clip was screened of Callum Murray being jostled and manhandled by Rangers players.

I wonder how many of the hacks correctly deduced that no action should be taken in this instance as the ref clearly was not intimidated.

More tricky than you might think, this refereeing lark!

I think this relates to players (THG for one) being cautioned that they may be in breach of the peace for blessing themselves in. Charges were never brought but the worlds press found out and the Protestant state of Scotland was ridiculed, rightly so. Yet not having learned from previous mistakes a high profile member of the Scottish Government mentioned that ‘blessing oneself in an aggressive manner could be considered offensive’ Apologise for the paraphrasing

Reading back. I’m going to give Billy McNeill the benefit of the doubt. I heard his comments on shortbread driving home, all 15 seconds and he hardly sounded convincing. The main sports story was based around a tale of two ex Celtic/rangers managers ahead of next weeks game.

The psychological stuff has obviously already started, with ‘ole wally declaring big tests ahead for new owner/manager/player (almost in a kinda been in a vacuum for the last 7 months way), whilst Billy gets quoted on the conduct of our support. Oh and watty also trotted out that they should sign boyd, and keep jelavic – priceless from the guy who had to sell boyd in the first place.

Haven’t read anything in the papers so I may be wrong, but my initial thoughts from the broadcast were, total set-up – Billy McNeill being thrown a curved ball, and wally laying it thick in a way SDM could only dream of (reckon in his retirement and all that daytime TV he now watches he dreams of being a guest on the 70’s programme ‘Fantasy Island’). See through it.

I’m glad your’e switching to a phone, at least we can hope for brevity ;-) because there’s still much mistaken in your latest post.

You didn’t quite say Celtic were somehow to blame but implied we were, by ‘raising the stakes’ in challenging ‘their’ song book?. I repeat we didn’t and if only we had, we could have headed them off at the pass, on the central ‘crime’ of sectarianism, and wouldn’t now be finding new undefined

weekly terms, such as ‘political sectarianism’.

John Reid in 2008 very belatedly got involved with TFS only after a fan had the gumption to raise the matter to the Irish Parliament, Celtic PLC then tip toed, quietly back to into their corporate gazebo, and we heard no more, until UEFA eventually acted against Rangers.

I make no apology for posting again that since at least 1993, and Celtic’s new mission statement offensive ( let alone sectarian) songs are not sung inside Celtic Park aside from one possibly, two songs which contain a highly debatable ‘political reference.’ – But then you know this don’t you?

To imply Celtic have been asking Celtic fans to stop singing certain ‘songs’ for years is wrong, because there were no songs for them to stop singing, and as recently as this years AGM PL specifically only referred to, ‘political add ons’

I won’t even bother going into what Rangers did, because aside from various official Rangers sources vigorously defending the TFS and trying to argue ( just banter ) that it wasn’t sectarian, there’s nothing not a lot to go into.

The only bit I agree with you was the Tynecastle game, where the travelling Celtic Support sang up, having witnessed an attack on our manager, and clearly did so because of severe intimidation.

Quite what songs you expect to hear inside Celtic Park, sung by the Celtic fans on 28/12/11 is beyond me.

If you are waiting on an ancient repertoire that even the oldest of the fans have already forgotten, then you’ll be disappointed, because we always have been much more advanced than them, but then you already know this as well, don’t you?

Just listened to a song called The Celtic Family on You Tube no bigoted words great music and tells us (celtic fans around the world) exactly what and why Celtic were founded for and after the past few days with the racist and bigoted law now having been adopted we can remind ourselves and our Family around the world what we really are about and what we as The Celtic Family stands for. Please listen to the words and if we can persuede the powers that be at Celtic Park to play it on the 28th Dec. it could really silence our critics. Please make you views on this song known to the powers that be at Celtic Park.

A bit like Paul67 the other day I had cause to visit the hairdressers earlier. The choice of reading material was poor to say the least. The Star? No thanks. The Hamilton Advertiser? It’s just full of masonic/orange lodge notices. So that left me with The Sun, lesser of 3 evils.
