Unprepared Celtic

1214

Shakhter Karagandy covered 5k more ground than Celtic last night, 500m per outfield player.  That’s 5.5m per minute, per player, or an extra meter every 10 seconds or so.  That kind of advantage means that when the ball breaks loose in and around the danger area, the more active team are in space – which happened at both goals.

Conversely, when Celtic were in advanced positions Shakhter players were there in numbers. The difference was not caused by exceptional exertion by Shakhter, in their match with Maribor last night, Viktoria Plzen covered 11k more than Celtic, or a clear 2 meters every 10 seconds per outfield player.

Despite enjoying the vast majority of possession the Celtic players were lacking in movement and ideas. Being short of ideas is one thing but lack of movement is altogether unacceptable. We have to prepare fitness levels ahead of the second leg meticulously; Inverness on Saturday is only relevant for those who need game time ahead of Wednesday.

The Mouhokolo-van Dijk novice partnership was a surprise; a lot of faith was shown in players few of us know much about.  Could we have held Kelvin for another few weeks?  Would it have been less of a risk to play Ambrose and/or Mulgrew in defence? Yes to both, I suspect.

We learned Georgios is not a striker in 2009.  He is one of our most effective players when away from home but not as a striker.  Anthony Stokes is a striker but his style is just as unsuited to the formation we played last night as Georgios’. We seemed to pick a team to combat Shakhter’s strengths which didn’t play to our own.

I’m not convinced signing a player one week before an important game is an ideal preparation but taking the money early for Hooper, weeks before Amido Balde (or anyone else) has settled and considered a viable starter, is a calculated risk which is now in sharp focus.

We should also show some respect to Shakhter.  The club are miles out of their depth at this stage of European football but they left with all the credit.  After the game, manager Kumykov played down his chances, “we are not the favourites”.  He’s a clever man who knows what he is doing.

It is possible Celtic will play as badly next week but it’s more likely that we will put on a vastly better performance. Between now and then we have plenty of opportunity to wallow in an embarrassing defeat, so knock yourself out, but I’ll hold fire until the tie is decided, which I expect to be in Celtic’s favour. Bring it on.

You got to love European football.

Penalty kick practice, please……

Please accept my apology for posting my opinion that Celtic are still favourite to qualify for the group stages of the CL.

I accept that saying positive things about my team runs against the current ethos of most recently arrived posters.

I will try henceforth to temper my enthusiasm & to be as pessimistic as our new brand of CQN critics seem to demand.

Anyone else who has to apply for a job in the big bad world, has to go through a “Malum” test.

Why should footballer’s(like Brickies) or women(Hairdressers), be exempt from the procedures .

Celtic appear to have a few employee’s who have slipped through the thinking man’s test, they get caught standing there scratching there heads, when the going gets tough !

The money the players are on, wow,and they get tired as well, jeezo ,if it wasn’t so serious it would make you laugh.

Numerical reasoning tests for all future signings of Celtic please, find out where they stand.

  3. Looks like Finnbogason is keeping his options open. He does not seem keen to extend his contract and feels he will be at Heerenveen for this season unless an offer comes in where he can’t say ‘no’. Well that’s what the translation appears to say but it is all double Dutch to me.

  4. TnT, I didn’t go for Matthews on the left of the defence, as being a back three it really needs three players who have played at CB, which Lustig has but Matthews hasn’t. And I don’t think Kayal offers enough offensively, so I went for three in the middle who can push forward themselves and who can play an incisive forward pass more readily that Kayal.

The key for me is going to be the work-rate of the players, and in particular plenty of movement off the ball to ensure that every Celtic player has several quick options as soon as he comes into possession… as well as making their defenders feel like they are playing on shifting sand. (I’ll bet you’ve never heard that expression before!)

  5. the glorious balance sheet on

I`ve looked at Celtic`s summer transfer activity over the last 10 years to get a better handle on the board`s transfer strategy.

Curious/useless deadline day signings, a failure to buy from a position of strength, and transfer business outstanding whilst European qualification is ongoing is a recurring theme despite the number of managers who have come and gone in that period.

Summer 2003 – In the aftermath of reaching the UEFA Cup Final we play two Champions League qualifiers against MTK Hungaria and Kaunas and make one solitary signing in the close season – Michael Gray signs on loan on 31st August 2003. He was garbage – I was at Lyon v Celtic in the Champions League in December 2003 and watched him get roasted by the Lyon right winger (Luyindula I think) as we were put out of the Champions League. Gray left Celtic on 31 Dec 2003.

2004 – Henrik Larsson, Mjallby, Petta, Liam Miller and Jamie Smith leave in May 2004. Celtic qualify automatically for the Champions League. Henri Camara signs on loan at the end of July(reported loan fee £2.7m) and Juninho signs at the end of August. Both are away by January 2005.

2005 – Bellamy, McNamara, Lambert, Fernandez, Sylla, Douglas, Henchoz, Valgaeren, Laursen leave at the end of May 2005. On 27 July 2005 we play Artmedia Bratislava and lose 5-0 with Mo Camara, Paul Telfer, Jeremie Aladiere (loan) and Maciej Zurawski having been signed only days before the game. Boruc, Virgo and Nakamura are signed before the 2nd leg. We tumble out of Europe at the first hurdle, UCL 2nd Qualifying Round.

2006 – Dion Dublin, Stilian Petrov, Ross Wallace, John Hartson, Roy Keane, Stan Varga, Charlie Mulgrew and Mo Camara leave in the summer of 2006 as Celtic automatically enter the Champions League. Gary Caldwell, Derek Riordan, Kenny Miller, Jiri Jarosik and Evander Sno are signed in June 2006. Lee Naylor and Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink arrive at the end of August 2006. The June incoming transfer activity is probably due to guaranteed CL income and £7m Stilian Petrov transfer fee. On transfer deadline day Thomas Gravensen was signed from Real Madrid.

2007 – Neil Lennon and Craig Beattie leave in the close season as Celtic face a Champions League qualifier against Spartak Moscow. scott McDonald is signed in early summer. Maciej Zurawski scores in the penalty shoot-out v Spartak to help Celtic through despite knowing he is to be transferred to AEL Larissa the next day. Kenny Miller is sold to Derby on deadline day.

2008 – Gravesen, Evander Sno and Adam Virgo leave in May 2008. Celtic qualify automatically for the Champions League. Paddy McCourt signs in June 2008, Giorgios Samaras signs permanently in July 2008, Marc Crosas signs on 10 Aug, Glenn Loovens on 16 Aug and Shaun Maloney on 22 Aug. Derek Riordan and Steven Pressley leave on transfer deadline day.

2009- Lukasz Zaluska signs in June and Fortune, Fox and NGuemo (loan) are signed in July as Celtic face 2 qualifiers (Dynamo Moscow and Arsenal for Champions League).

2010 – Artur Boruc, Koki Mizuno, Stephen McManus, Lee Naylor and Zheng Zhi leave and Mulgrew, Cha, Ledley, Efrain Juarez, Gary Hooper and Daryl Murphy are signed before Celtic play Braga in a Champions League qualifier on 28 July. Aiden McGeady features as Celtic go out 4-2 on aggregate as does Fortune – both are sold within days. Beram Kayal is signed in between the two legs.

Celtic fall into the Europa League qualifiers. Majstorovic and Izaguirre are signed the day before the Utrecht first leg, Fraser Forster is signed on loan in between the two legs. Celtic fall out of Europe. Anthony Stokes is signed on deadline day.

2011 – Ljungberg and Hinkel leave early in summer 2011. Kelvin Wilson, Adam Matthews, Victor Wanyama and Dylan McGeoch are signed by the first week in July. Celtic do not confirm the resigning of Fraser Forster on loan until the day before the Sion Europa League 1st leg qualifier. Badr El Kaddouri (loan) and Bangura are signed on deadline day as Maloney and Hooiveld leave.

2012 – Juarez, Cha, Rasmussen, Majstorovic, Loovens, Mark Wilson and O`Dea leave in early summer 2012 as Celtic face 2 qualifiers for the Champions League.

Fraser Forster is signed permanently in July. Ki is sold for £6m on 24 August. Ambrose, Lassad and Miku(loan) are signed on deadline day after Celtic qualify for the Champions League.

Generally we only seem to sign players early in summer when automatic CL qualification has been secured and even then only modest activity (2006 being the exception but likely down to Petrov £7m transfer fee in).

In all other years we transfer first team players in and out during CL and Europa Lge qualifiers and do an awful lot of transfer business on deadline day – more often than not these are unsuccessful signings. This strategy has damaged us before – Artmedia, Braga, Utrecht – and would have damaged us again in 2011 but for Sion picking a fight with UEFA.

So I`m reluctant to blame Neil Lennon if we do not overcome the deficit in the 2nd leg. We`ve seen this movie before and we will again.

I,ll be there next Wed confident we can still go through, remember they have the long trip to make and more importantly with a 7:45 ok their body clock will be on 00:45am. 10. TnT, Izzie was posted missing for both Shakhter’s goals. For the second goal he conceded possession at the side of the Shakhter penalty area when he tried to “do a Jinky” between two defenders.

They simply booted the ball up the pitch to counter-attack, and when the ball deflected into the vacant LB position, with Izzie barely in his own half of the field, there was Khizhnichenko to head the ball past the back-pedalling van Dijk and the badly positioned Forster.

With Boerrigter attacking down the left Mulgrew would be able to concentrate more on defending any counter-attacks, and he would offer a taller, more physical presence when defending their long diagonal balls forward and crosses, as well as their long throw-ins.

Berlin Nightclub Berghain Introduce Secret Handshake Door Policy

Door staff at Berlin nightclub, Berghain, have begun using a secret handshake in an effort to curb the number of unwanted people attempting to gain entry into the club.

Infamous gatekeeper, Sven Marquadt, explained that, ‘too many people who weren’t “right” for the club have been trying to gain entry. With the handshake if you’re not a Berliner or a part of the scene then you won’t get in.’

Over two weekends in June the handshake was shown to people who gained access to the club through the old method so now the only way for others to gain entry is to have the handshake shown to them by people who were there to learn it firsthand.

‘It’s like word of mouth. People will show the handshake to other people, of course, but this way it ensures that the people who spread it were approved by myself personally and will know the type of club goer that Berghain looks for,’ added Marquadt.

TnT, I love the sound of derk and sammi. They couldn’t cope with that and it would give commons space aswell as giving sammi the idea he has free reign to drift around. It still gives us the problem of a target man up front but we have enough midfielders capable of getting into the box when told so.

Don’t you just get tired of the sanctimonious “im a better Celtic Fan than you” diatribes? Its amazing how many excuses they can come up with for not buying a striker, in particular. Anyone who genuinely thinks that we will get the same results with £20m worth of talent sold and an untried defensive pairing is beyond delusional. “I doubt they’d have made a difference” say some, really, “their heart isn’t in it they had to be sold”, put it this way if they were still there would Lenny have played them, you betch ya. The only thing big about our club is the support and PL’s wages (we’ll get back to him).

Lenny is a giant of a man, but a limited coach, the team plays very much in his style as a player. Given his limitations, surely it is the duty of whoever recruits players to give him as much quality as possible? But then again, PL works for DD and the PLC first and foremost and his duty is to act in the interests of the shareholders, notably DD, so maybe his hands are tied too, doubt it though.

With regards to the team selection, Lenny took too much of a gamble (on a par with PL’s) with the line up, everybody is shifted around to accommodate certain players, CM is a CB and shouldn’t be played anywhere else, 9/10 times in midfield it doesn’t work (he doesn’t have quick enough feet to play there). CM and Efe (I thought he was the new whipping bhoy) have experience of playing there in Europe, SM and Virgil on the evidence so far (pre season and last night) it seems that some partnerships just don’t work. Sammi up front, we saw this for years that this doesn’t work, even more so when he is not 100% fit. Izzy knows he will play every week so hasn’t worked on his game, at least so it seems, the right backs are generally fine, Brown and Ledley get outnumbered in midfield so its not much of a surprise to note that we don’t have a midfield threat nor cover for the back four. The Big Wall is exactly what it says on the tin, while his attributes outweigh his failings he is stationary in the box, given the nature of refereeing if he comes for anything and doesn’t get it he’ll generally get a foul (so play the percentages). Have I missed anyone, oh James Forrest, when he broke into the team he had pace and a good shot with either feet, has this been coached out of him? To be honest even the Wizard of Oz couldn’t help him now.

I’ll be there to see if we can beat ICT at the weekend by 3 goals and none against, if so then maybe just maybe we can get to the CL, as ever we live in hope rather than expectation……………
