Virgil’s suitors

2079

Aye, sure, Dick Advocaat would like to sign Virgil van Dijk for Sunderland.  Of course he would, but Virgil is very unlikely to go to Sunderland for a host of reasons.  Many clubs have made inquiries about Virgil but the player has an understanding with the club.

For a start, he’s going nowhere until after the Champions League qualifiers are over with, and even then, player and club have agreed that only approaches from tier-one clubs will be considered.  No disrespect intended for Sunderland, but a haul of one cup in 79 years leaves them well off the pace.

The prospect of Celtic being interested in Steven Fletcher, as reported in The Herald this morning, is unlikely to make any difference.  If Fletcher is wanted it will be for the qualifiers, there will be no quid pro quo.

Virgil has two years left on his contract and there’s little prospect of him extending his stay in Scotland, so if Celtic decide to listen to offers in late August it’ll do no harm having as many English clubs as possible bidding portions of their TV bounty for the player.  So let Sunderland bid away.

You and I have been working on the whole Mary’s Meals project for a couple of years now.  It’s not a big part of any of our lives, but what we’ve done is a big part in the lives of thousands of kids we’ll never know.

Reaching the 1 million kids fed each day figure last month has reinvigorated the charity.  It’s a worldwide phenomenon but incredibly started here in Scotland.

At midnight tonight a couple of guys will start to walk the West Highland Way, 96 miles, a 17 thousand feet ascent.  They hope to complete the journey within 24 hours.

You and I know that not every journey is completed on time, some, sadly, will never be completed……… but these two are close to hitting their £6k target figure for Mary’s Meals before they set off.  Go and give them a a couple of pounds, help drive them on to complete the task.  Every £1 you give will feed a child for a month.  A month!  Tell me you’re going to do something better today and I’ll not believe you.

‘Surely rampant nationalism has to be weeded out. ‘

I wasn’t aware that the SFA was against lion rampant nationalism.

Mind you, if nationalism was to be eradicated from Scottish football it would involve the abolition of the SFA which I think most Celtic fans would welcome.

  2. Just a few thoughts on CL final last night.

Barcelona were worthy winners , in the early stages the loss of Chiellini for Juventus was obvious but as the game went on the defence looked more comfortable .

In some ways the equaliser was a surprise but for a good period after that Juve were the better side.

Buffon looked ponderous as he parried a Messi shot and Suarez put it away well. However his celebration, his injury and the long walk off wasted nearly all the time that was added on . It was noticeable that the Italians didn’t complain about that.

Neymar got the the third , his bandana of 100% Jesus is ripe for a photoshop.

We only saw flashes of the brilliant Messi and I am left feeling that coming up against proper defenders week in week out would make him an even better player.

Pogba was my man of the match and looked top class .

Thoroughly enjoyed the game and congrats to Barca on a tremendous double treble.

  3. Fifa investigations being done by the wrong people and for the wrong reasons.

US and UK sour grapes at not being awarded world cups are a big part of the motivation. Moves will be made to try and steal the finals from Russia and Quatar. This inspite of the fact many big football countries like England ,France and Germany have been involved in underhand payments-bribes. Also they are trying to wrest power from the “world” and get europe-US in control.A colonial move.

But it wont suceed because the majority of the countries of the world can see this “investigation”sham for what it is.

Summed last nights game up pretty well, I also think Buffon missed Chielini bossing his penalty box, big Pogba reminds of a young Patrick Viera or a more mobile Victor Wanyama, thought he played well last night and Barca could do with him for next season

I was saying exactly the same thing about Pogba last night . Looks like he has everything you would want in a midfielder .

Also think we should get over ourselves as far as Juventus are concerned . They are a fine side .

    SOD the motivation.

Read “Foul” by Andrew Jennings. FIFA were ripping the piss out of football.

Reform, same as for the SFA, essential.

I still can’t believe Man Utd let Pogba slip through their fingers, every time I see him he gets better and better, thought he had a really good World Cup as well, think he would fit well in our midfield with Broony & Biton… (A bhoy can dream)

  16. Be good to see Ireland win tonight..and even more so with no injuries.

Hope that slimy ejit Delaney gets dogs abuse

  17. Club says

With Celtic Park undergoing normal pre-season groundworks, the team will be based at St. Mirren Park in Paisley for the three pre-season matches.

    ::::::::::

Normal? When have we played 3 home games in Paisley ?

Of course, it may be that This is instead of traipsing all over Europe and meeting the demands of the manager but why not just say that?

Didn’t realise they had Pogba on their books , sure they also had Pique .

Fairly clear RD wasn’t having any more of the pre season travelling caravan show

He was quite critical of it last season ..

  20. I ki. Good point. Having qualifiers this early obviously causes aggro for the ground staff – possibly a reason for away friendlies in previous close seasons. Last year’s Commonwealth Games disguised that slightly as we didn’t have access to the stadium anyway.

If RD is getting his way re planning and travel then I think that’s a good thing. If certain other people at CP are trying to save face by spinning this as ‘normal’ then that’s Ok by me because we can see through it.

On the plus side , only 24 sleeps (c jobo baldie) until we see Celtic playing again.

Having pre season games in a smaller stadium makes sense due to holidays and fans coming from long distances.

A full 10k seated stadium is better than an empty Celtic park

  26. New St Mirren Park has a capacity of 8,023. I would expect it to be full for each of the games we’ll be playing there. And yes Sanna just 24 more sleeps ;-)
