What now from HMRC after New £9m tax delinquency

1073

Contrary to our earlier understanding, Rangers did not win a ruling from the Court of Session on who was to be appointed administrator, HMRC and Rangers came to agreement on the appointment of Duff and Phelps, who acted for Whyte during his takeover of the club.

The admission by Duff and Phelps that today’s court action by HM Revenue and Customs was in connection to circa £9m unpaid tax accrued since the takeover in May last year will come as a surprise no one in the Celtic Quick News community.  This is why Rangers are now in administration, it’s nothing to do with the big tax case, or indeed, the wee tax case.

Key question is, what will HMRC do now?  They’re not going away/. Rangers continued to sign football players despite being delinquent with taxes, and briefed journalists that they rejected a £9m offer for a player on 31 August 2011.

The fact that the business is in administration due to activity carried out under Craig Whyte’s tenure may also interest the Insolvency Service, who are already investigating Whyte’s takeover of the club following information passed by former chairman, Alastair Johnston.

  1. A grey, but already-changeable morning here in North Ayrshire.

Wall-to-wall Rangers plight on the radio this, and yesterday, morning. I’ve yet to hear a call which sympathised with them.

Heard the Scottish assistant prime minister her with the same mooth as George Robertson only concerned about Rangers employees. With Sir David Murray having backed the SNP very publicly … this Rangers lark might be the end of Scottish independence

    Hail Haik

  3. Throughout the lifetime of most bloggers on here we have known that the huns have been CHEATING.

On the pitch Going back to the days of Jock Stein saying ‘we had to be good enough to beat the officials aswell as the opponents’ we were always told it was a conspiracy theory, Celtic paranoia and all because it could not be proven.

Well at last it is now being PROVEN that the huns have been CHEATING!! all be it off the pitch but cheating all the same.

They have cheated their way to trophies by ‘buying’ players of a higgher standard than they could afford to pay for (they still have not paid the jelavic transfer fee and his goals won them the title last season)

They have been able to pay higher wages than they could afford to attract better standard of player ALLEDGEDLY by having 2 contracts and the ebt thingy

They have cheated the tax man by not paying their fair share of tax which should have gone towards public services such as hospitals, police, schools etc.

Cheating can not be allowed to prosper and must be punished accordingly

It,s beginning to feel like a long episode of ‘The Hustle’ starring DM,CW and admin Ally.

These positive statements of ‘Rangers will come out of this stronger’.

Now we are getting drip fed stories of a consortium waiting in the wings.

A crime is being committed in full view of the world.

Any right minded ,honest and reputable businessman wouldn’t drive down Copland Road just now in case he is spotted.

    I smell shite!.

  5. You guys do all realise there is no way out for Rangers 1873?

No matter what the press say you can take that to the bank.

    They are gone.

They will be back but when, where and how will be a while before we know.

Honestly guys can you stop insinuating that Dignity FC have acted illegally by not paying their PAYE and VAT. I read the palptalk this morning and quite clearly they state that these funds are being withheld

My wife basically hates football. However being a Senior Lecturer in Media at local Uni she knows a thing or two about the Press , TV etc works…

She has been following the story. Her basic belief is that the media usually end up reflecting public opinion more than they ever try to inform it. That way they maximise their audience more easily. Essentially they print what the majority want to read.

There comes a point where dead horses really should be consigned to the knackers yard and it becomes pointless to keep flogging them.

We are approaching that point. Folk are already accepting that the Huns are corrupt, there is zero credibility among those running the show…folk (except us on CQN!) are tiring of the same old story every day. The media will soon reflect that.

I anticipate a new flurry of media enthusiasm for NewCo Huns but there’s a limit to the excitement you can muster in the SPL , let alone Div3…

Look at Leeds, once the dominant force of British football…anybody even know what division they are in? Who is their Captain? who did they sign in the transfer window? Where are they in their league?…I’d need to look the answers up…I certainly haven’t read about them for years…

    That is Rangers destiny…

  13. Guys

As we contemplate as James has, and as the dust continues to swirl around this fiasco I look to the day to day interactions that we are all about to embark on without being able to direct or control them. I simply mean meeting a friend or neighbor who is genuine and hurting to meeting the epitome of hundome, the no surrender, we are the people troll, and we all know some and we all will come across them in the coming weeks, it is important to remember that a wounded animal is more dangerous and considerably less reasonable.

So confronted by such a character in the street or in your local you will have 2 options as he attempts to blame everyone but themselves for their failure, you can attempt to pacify and console him as the cock crows over your shoulder, or more dangerously you may attempt to educate him in everything that we know they have done to ruin our game with their dignity. Clever put-downs and remarks will just anger bear worse, even a gloating smile may be enough to provoke bad bear into assaultive action, so what can we do to carry ourselve through this storm with our heads held high?

I propose a short concise list of Ratners historical facts so distilled that it can be delivered quickly and can have the ability to have your raging, even the most despicable bear considering the facts and realising that they were to blame and that they can detach themselves from this affiliation with Rangers and look back on it as a mistake in their life’s but as an opportunity to move on as a nicer person.

Is such a list possible and can you see the merits of such.

  14. Running a major company into the ground like the RBS was enough to see Sir Fred Goodwin stripped of his knighthood. Alleged tax evasion on a scale unprecedented in Scottish business history would surely be an act even more heinous. Will we see a similar punishment for the alleged perpetrator?

  15. It’s quite amusing to see the metropolitan sophisticated veneer falling off Kirsty Wark this morning at any criticism of Rangers.

Is her man one of the Camel Coat figures at Ibrox or does this reflect her family roots in Dumfries and Ayrshire?

Craig Whyte may have 2 sham divorce settlements to consider.

Mrs. Whyte will want to get 95% of his gains from pecking at the carcass of Rangers in case her hubby gets jail time and can’t spend money.

Dave King’s recent sham divorce from the Whyte Board may be the more interesting soap to watch.

  22. So Margaret Curran stated that Rangers shouldn’t be cut a deal in terms of the amount owed but hinted that a long payment plan might be the way forward. Well I can only guess that she hasn’t looked at the figures involved too closely because (and I know you know this) as it stands Rangers FC isn’t a viable business.

We are told by Craig Whyte that Rangers essentially operate at a £10M loss, and why should we doubt him, that’s more or less what he failed to pay HMRC in the last 9 months.

Putting Ticketus aside for a moment, based on average gates, should the Rangers fans rally behind the cause and they sell out of season books there’s only an increase in revenue of around £2.5M. There’s no where else to increase income. So we’re down to £7.5M loss.

I think the £75M is the total of what’s likely to be owed (inluding yesterday’s new £9M), so what kind of payment plan is she talking – 10, 15, 20 years? I’ll plump for the middle 15 years – £5M/season. So costs are now £12.5M over income.

Essentially the only way to meet that is to cut the football wage bill, since most other costs are relatively fixed. Taking £12.5M off the wage bill would bring it down to somewhere just above Hearts’ wage bill, based on it being around £22M (which I think is what CW stated it was).

Do we think Rangers can sustain a sold out season book allocation, while fielding a squad of around Hearts level? It would only take a loss of around 20k season seats to leave Rangers with no money for football wages.

Except of course there is a Ticketus deal. Which knocks a further £10M off their income in the next 3 seasons.

It’s worth repeating what’s been stated by many people. Rangers need somebody prepared to lose £100M straight away if they want to continue as is. Then be prepared to put money in year on year even to sustain a drastically downsized Rangers. In my view such a person, or group of persons does not exist.

We generate somewhere in the region of £4M more per season based on our larger support. It cannot be stated highly enough what a difference that makes to our relative stability.

  23. The meeja keep trooping out folk that are telling me that I should not be gloating about Rangers’ demise, and that this is a disaster for Scottish Football.

Trouble is………I cannae stop grinning when I think about it!!

Quick story about Peter Ridsdale while at Leeds. The son of a client of mine was schoolboy with Leeds, turned 16 and told to go to Ridsdale’s office on the Monday, getting his first pro contract. Took his dad, who had spoken to an agent. Agent says just go and sign anything reasonable, he’s only 16, he lives at home, he just needs to get a foot in the door and ply his trade for a year or two, just give himself a chance by concentrating on his football. £200 a week would pay all his digs, travel, pocket money etc.

Monday comes, in he goes with his dad. Ridsdale opens with a long talk about football being the priority, this was his big chance, ignore the money side he sees on the telly, he’s only 16.

Right, says Ridsdale, we’ve drawn up the contract – £800 per week.

Son and Dad look at each other, mouth open, stunned. Silence for maybe 5 to 10 seconds.

Risdale bangs the desk in anger. Right! Football has gone mad! £1,200! Take it or get out!

We’ll take it whispers the dad as they back out the office.

I won’t tell you the boy’s name. Now at the end of his career, still playing in the football league.
