CRISTIAN GAMBOA endured the worst possible debut for Celtic – a 7-0 Champions League trouncing from Barcelona in the Camp Nou in September 2016.

The Costa Rican right-back had just arrived in a £1.2million deal from West Brom the previous month and Brendan Rodgers had high hopes for the attacking full-back.

The Irishman, who had just taken over from Ronny Deila, said: “He’s very much on the front foot, he’s super quick, but, first and foremost, he can defend. So, I’m looking forward to seeing him work and play with us.”

After three years and only 30 appearances, Gamboa was on his way after failing to live up to the promise of the Hoops boss.

He was released with a year still to run on his contract and joined German outfit Vfl Bochum. At 33, the speedy full-back still has a year to run on his contract at the club.
