Why this is the finest Celtic team in 47 years

751

You and I have seen some special Celtic teams. For me, the double winning team in 1977, the Centenary team and, of course, the Martin O’Neill team, were without doubt above anything we’ve had since the 60s.

I am in no way disparaging Gordon Strachan’s remarkable achievement of twice reaching the knock out stages of the Champions League. This was down to Gordon’s superior ability as a manager; the wee man didn’t have a squad to compare to the others on the list.

By contrast, this team, in its embryonic state, finished fourth in the Champions League group, but that was then. Now, they are within touching distance of winning an undefeated treble. This is the finest Celtic team I’ve seen.

SPFL_PTFC_CELTIC_0456_1

The ’77 team wasn’t so much a team as a support act for Kenny Dalglish. A season later, without King Kenny, they finished fifth, without even a Uefa Cup spot as compensation.

It was sheer force of Billy McNeill’s personality which drove the Centenary team on, but they returned for preseason without their elixir.

It was like going to school watching Martin O’Neill’s team. We learned so much about the game that we’d never seen at Celtic. This was a guy who knew how to get results. But without another King, we discovered that team too was built on a single foundation.

There are no Kings in this Celtic team. They are a team in the true sense of the word. Last night, without Dembele, Armstrong, Tierney, Lustig, Simunovic and Sinclair they rolled around the Firhill surface like a machine from the 22nd century.

It was breathtaking. This is the greatest Celtic team since the one which walked off the Hampden pitch in front of 136,000 fans in 1970.

I saw a preview of the BBC documentary film, Glasgow 1967: The Lisbon Lions, which airs across the UK on Wednesday 24th May. It was heartfelt, entertaining and inspiring. I intended to review it today, but I was so annoyed at the coverage some in the media gave it, I thought I better step back to do the job justice.

They had some of the Lions, of course, and some wives too, but they sat a microphone in front of a few of our more experienced CQN’ers Some of the best things you have read on this site come to life on the screen. We’ll talk about it again next week.

Stunned and humbled at the support for the marathon, which takes place on Sunday morning, to benefit the Celtic Foundation. I just don’t know what to say. There are spectacular donations (here) there – a simple thank you does not seem appropriate, but I know every donation, large or small, means someone has taken the trouble to spend hard earned money.

It is appreciated, thank you.

If you’d like to get an historic week off to a unique start I hear there’s a projector screening of the original live broadcast and whole 90 minutes from Lisbon in a Govan warehouse tonight (Friday, 19th), it’ll run from around 6.30 till 9. If interested drop an email to cqnopen@gmail.com

Was at a first communion today.

Three beautiful wee nieces, all in one go.

Everything was perfect, the food, the wine, the company.

    But.

    There was a bouncy castle.

My first couple of goes were ok. Nobody was filming, and I didn’t flatten any kids.

Then, after another cider, a wasp turned up, and was crawling about causing panic.

So I climb up again to save the day, the world takes a bounce to the left, and I am falling through space and not landing on the bouncy castle.

    Dislocated shoulder.

A few very uncomfortable hours, a trip to the death star, wonderful drugs, and no memory of bone shoved back in socket.

Back to the party, pain free, and drinking and singing like a man set free.

    Almost worth it.

You have my sympathies, as I know what it is like. Tobogganing incident during a weekend at the cottage with some friends … flying down the hill too fast, off the dock and hit the frozen lake … followed by 3 hours of 2 surgeons trying to put my shoulder back together … and some kick ass pain meds!

    Hope you feel better soon.

I feel ok now, but I am drunk.

The thing is, although I was in constant pain, I knew what was happening.

Just have to get to the drugs.

Just have to get to the drugs.

    And then its over.

Rascar … not rascal! Sorry.. bloody autocorrect.

Take your meds and get some rest pal.

  5. Good Morning CQN

    4 days to go

Today in Lisbon, the skies will be partly cloudy, with sunny period and no rain forecast. The high temperature will be 80 degrees.

    :-)

    Morning All.

Is today the day we become invincibles?

Something none of us have witnessed yet.

Torrential rain yesterday, so pitch maybe a bit heavier than expected.

I predict 3.0 to the hoops.

    Hail Hail.

    JUST 3-0?

I am greedy and want more!

Dont get me wrong 3-0 would be brilliant and the team would achieve an incredible record.

Although its something we have not seen strangely enough the sheep fan i was talking to yesterday felt we could do the same again next season and sees no reason why we cant as we are so far ahead of anything else here and may well get even better with a few more signings.

He also took the time to point out the strength in depth due to Christie being with them on loan and the players on the bench all walking into any team in Scotland.

I am getting to like him!

    Anyway…..3-0 eh?

I hope we hit that wee point in the proceedings that everyone starts flying and are all looking for the ball and keep driving forward with all the shackles off as they are clearly having a ball.

Would love to be able to put into words what i mean!

Sometimes at 2 or 3 nil the team will just knock the ball about, running the clock down and the game just ebbs away.

Sometimes theres a wee spark caused by another goal and suddenly, even though the game is won, it becomes a tidal wave of attacks and somehow everyone is piling forward looking for more instead of just knocking it about.

Hope you know what i mean!

Id love that wee spark to happen today but it will be an honour to applaud the team off the park today for what they have given us this season, regardless of the result.

5-0 the Griff first goal is a common bet and I hope it comes up for themselves that have the punt.

Can see us getting more than five goals to be honest the minis are a disaster at the moment. Unfortunately

I know what you mean it happened at Firhill on Thursday when 3 became 5 in the blink of an eye and T.R. really should have added a 6th.

Brendan has talked about our pitch a lot and with the torrential rain yesterday, I feel the heavy pitch will slow down our quick passing style. So 3 for me but will be so happy if I am wrong and we score 5/6.

    Canamalar.

It’s only a few years ago that on trophy day it was 5.0 and Gary Hooper scored them all. What odds L.G to score 5? :-)))

Good luck to the Celts today, an opportunity to add the finishing touch to a job well done.

The joy of this league campaign is something to cherish forever, win lose or draw today. The players have worked hard to entertain us and I send my thanks to every one of the squad.

    6IAR!, still six to go.

  17. I’ve got to fit Mrs. Corkcelt’s Birthday party between the Title winning game & Cork V Tipperary game at 4pm.

My kids & spouses plus 8 grandkids due to descend on the gaff around 2pm.

Good be great or could be a disaster.

Confident of Celtic Game but unfortunately Cork hurling is in a bad place. Would settle for a battling performance & a narrow defeat there.

Great times to be a Tim, I really felt a pang reading Almore’s post re a plane load of Tims leaving Dublin.

Next season I’ve got to get my ass in gear & get back on the road following the Hoops.

A brilliant article by Hugh McIlvanney about the Lions in today’s Sunday Times. I know it’s a Murdoch paper, but hold your nose and buy it. The man uses words like Van Gogh used a brush.
