Clyde flows west but tide of football history flows east to Parkhead

574

Dalglish, we are told, ran to his bedroom to rip posters off the wall, in case Sean Fallon would see them and reconsider, but Celtic have always been open to all. Kenny will tell you, he was assured Rangers were preparing to sign him, but this was Celtic. In 1967. He knew which way the tide of history was flowing.

Sean’s boss, The Boss, once spent his free Saturdays following Rangers. Stein didn’t just become a lapsed Rangers fan, according to his friend and biographer, Archie Macpherson. As Celtic manager, he made it his business to wholly and completely end the dominance they had over the then humble team from Parkhead. I’ll spare the detail of how that sentiment translated down to the vernacular.

Scott Allan made no secret of his boyhood allegiances. He would have gone to Ibrox in a flash, as would so many of our historic greats, but this decision came down to a simple truth. The basic salary on offer at Celtic is around three times what the jungle drums were offering across the city. This disparity means it’s not just about the money, it’s about that tide of history, which Kenny Dalglish knew so well.

Today is witness to one more veil being peeled off, exposing more of the consequences of what happened when Rangers decided not to make provisions for the inevitable challenge to their aggressive tax avoidance schemes. Their Discounted Options Scheme was found to be illegal, as were several of their Employee Benefit Trusts, with the remainder subject to appeal, but the club went to the wall because that inevitable challenge made it impossible for them to borrow other people’s money.

Liquidation followed and hundreds of creditors were left unpaid, but while a newco from such ashes could change their name to Rangers and wear the same jerseys, it was always going to look like an off-key tribute act. This was never going to be about three years in the lower leagues.

    Scott Allan ???

Not saw much of the Bhoy play, if Ronny thinks he can do a job good enough for me, biggest positive for me Liam Henderson playing (hopefully) week in week out, I have always said it the youngsters like Liam need game time away from Celtic park, let young Liam learn his trade and come back a better player, as for Scott Allan yet again I don’t care who he supports or supported will always have my backing wearing the hoops and representing Celtic !

I would scrap the development team and loan them all out to the lower leagues, obviously making sure it’s the right clubs the bhoys are going too, Andrew Robertson at Quuens Park, Dundee Utd loaned GMS out to Airdrie and then the Livvy crew Griffiths, Snodgrass and a few others, if Stuart Armstrong & GMS were with us since their early teens they wouldn’t be starting many games

3pts the morra and and Malmo 0 on Wednesday will do, quietly confident !

I thought about putting Charlie in at left back

Think he will be in for the Malmo game, so left him out at this stage

  5. I’m disappointed that Liam has gone on loan to Hibs.as for our manager who I have given my support since he came to manage Celtic.I’m afraid he has got it wrong. He should have punted either Mcgregor or Rogic.who will not make it with Celtic.and has Allan actually signed

We share the same favourite player ever Daniel Fergus McGrain. The pride of oor half of Drumchapel. Danny was never a big Ibrox visitor. More a Rangers tv fan.

    how ya doing?

I agree … I would like to see us give them a pumping tomorrow … we seemed to be lacking a bit of confidence on Wednesday, and a few goals tomorrow would gee everyone (but mostly the players) for Wednesday (which I think is going to be a very tough game).

See when there was a space in the Scottish leagues in 2012, Celtic should have applied for this, and put the reserve team into league 3 for serious game time and develop our Youths

Could have made an agreement like there is in Spain, whereby this team cannot make the Premier league, and as hinted by Winning Captains, played their games out of Broadwood, sharing the stadium with Celtic Ladies

    Now there’s something radical :-)

  15. From the Kivlichan Family History:

William did well at St Joseph s and got several prizes in Mathematics, Latin and English when he was fourteen. My grandfather wanted him to be a priest, so he was sent to Blair’s Seminary after he’d got all his higher’s when he was seventeen. He had no vocation for the priesthood, so he came home after two terms. His father was very angry so he refused to give him any further financial help with his education. Luckily he was a skilful football player and got a place in the Queen of the South team. Next year he went back to school in Dumfries Academy where he took extra higher’s and was the sports champion that year at that time Rangers Football Club were looking for young players and their scouts saw my father playing and asked then to play for them. . They signed him up for a year not knowing that he was a catholic, the Rangers policy then, 1904, was not to have any catholic players so when the rangers board realised that he was a catholic they arranged with Celtic to exchange him for a Protestant player they had called Alex Bennet

Willie completed his studies whilst playing football and he went on to become a Doctor – he was also the Celtic Club Doctor and attended to John Thomson on that tragic fateful day at Ibrox in September 1931.

*I believe that Wispy maintains he was a Falkirk fan growing up. However, he allegedly had a brother who when working at Burroughs in Cumbernauld wore a deid team scarf regularly, seemingly after signing for us the scarf was binned.

Cowiebhoy and Delaney’s, Danny is my favourite also , what a player. and servant for us.

When I stayed in Drumchapel, the McGrains stayed two streets away from me in Airgold Avenue. I used to Danny’s brother, Tommy, going to training with Celtic Boys Club.

One of Danny’s daughters was a midwife in the Queen Mothers Maternity unit. She looked after my wife in the ante-natal ward there before our children were born.

I don’t know if Danny still has a role in our backroom team after his heart attack last year.

Danny is indestructible in my view after all the injuries and his diabetes , reaching the heights he did as a player.

I agree with your opinion of Rogic and McGregor however both have been on season long loans already and it hasn’t had the desired effect on their overall game , I think Henderson will be a different prospect when he returns … I don’t hold out much hope for either of the other two making it and the arrival of Allen will make their chances even more remote

  20. Scottish based RONNY is on a role!

    has he signed yet.?

not checked on any 3 year old forums or blogs yet but surely now this will awaken the knuckle draggers to the fact there is no over-investment, there is no warchest, there is no family inheritance making its way up the marble stairway….. in fact they are truly potless

this could be a defining moment over govan way where the hoardes finally see that that DCK is truly a glib and shameless liar, will be interesting to see how the succulent lamb diners manage to put positive spin on this in the days to come.

good luck to LH, 30-40 games this season playing football the way Stubbsy sees the game can only be beneficial to him and Celtic, i wonder if there is a clause in the loan agreement where we can call him back early if we suffer an injury crisis etc.?
