Clyde flows west but tide of football history flows east to Parkhead

Dalglish, we are told, ran to his bedroom to rip posters off the wall, in case Sean Fallon would see them and reconsider, but Celtic have always been open to all. Kenny will tell you, he was assured Rangers were preparing to sign him, but this was Celtic. In 1967. He knew which way the tide of history was flowing.

Sean’s boss, The Boss, once spent his free Saturdays following Rangers. Stein didn’t just become a lapsed Rangers fan, according to his friend and biographer, Archie Macpherson. As Celtic manager, he made it his business to wholly and completely end the dominance they had over the then humble team from Parkhead. I’ll spare the detail of how that sentiment translated down to the vernacular.

Scott Allan made no secret of his boyhood allegiances. He would have gone to Ibrox in a flash, as would so many of our historic greats, but this decision came down to a simple truth. The basic salary on offer at Celtic is around three times what the jungle drums were offering across the city. This disparity means it’s not just about the money, it’s about that tide of history, which Kenny Dalglish knew so well.

Today is witness to one more veil being peeled off, exposing more of the consequences of what happened when Rangers decided not to make provisions for the inevitable challenge to their aggressive tax avoidance schemes. Their Discounted Options Scheme was found to be illegal, as were several of their Employee Benefit Trusts, with the remainder subject to appeal, but the club went to the wall because that inevitable challenge made it impossible for them to borrow other people’s money.

Liquidation followed and hundreds of creditors were left unpaid, but while a newco from such ashes could change their name to Rangers and wear the same jerseys, it was always going to look like an off-key tribute act. This was never going to be about three years in the lower leagues.

  1. Ghuys if your at church this weekend could you light a candle for a good man who lost his only child very young this week.

  2. Embarrassing how the media are reacting to what should be a minor transfer story. All this hoopla because of their desperation to manipulate a move for Scott Allan to the mighty Sevco. Anyone would think this guy was Lionel Messi!

I haven’t spoken to any zombies yet, but the 275 grand is worth it alone to read and listen to the badly hurting msm.

They’re taking this one bad, especially DJ. The dogs in the street are howling like wolves at his high pitched screams. His partner Keevins as usual hadn’t got the buns to put him right on any of his many gaffs. Not a finger pointed at the liar King btw

He was one of my heroes as a young impressionable Celtic supporter between ’84-’87. I was devastated when he elected to sign for them instead of coming back to Parkhead.

Still, I maintain that the boots it gave the club that his signing was imminent helped us win the Scottish Cup in ’89.

I agree. Stood and sung for the clown at Love Street but it was important for the 89 final. Broken hearted a whole summer though.

  8. If you are going out of your way to give an opinion, there is no point in wasting your time if you are not brutally honest and do your best to produce some evidential basis. I have taken ‘pelters’ on here for being straightforward and getting up the noses of the mud-slingers and name-callers…..so I was nauseated as I listened to the first fifteen minutes ( all I could stomach) of Clyde SSB.

If there is more mealy-mouthed person commenting on Scottish football than Hugh Keevins, I have never came across them. This is a sick-bag of a man, a ‘feartie’, who is worthy only of derision and contempt.

Derek Johnstone is of course a buffoon who would not be employed by any media outlet that wasn’t based in the West of Scotland.

This is Scottish parochialism in all its glory, encapsulated EVERY night of the week and in publications like the Daily Record – wretched stuff!

Its hard to believe that, in the 21st century, it is even possible to print such disgraceful bollox for a newspaper.

& for that Churnolist to have the audacity to actually call another human being “Delusional” is quite concerning that someone is actually brave enough to employ this guy.

He seems to be a guy that is in such a poor mental state that it wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest if I were to switch on the 10 o’clock news to discover that he actually went into a supermarket in Edinburgh & let all his rage go on innocent bystanders with an M16 Machine Gun.

I agree with what you are saying regarding SMSM, it’s not a big transfer at all, it’s a smallish punt on the lower division Championship player of the year, and should be treated as such.

I didn’t want him at the Rangers, because he’s stuck out a mile every time I’ve seen him play.

It’s a lot worse than that though when some SMSM try and liken it to when the old Rangers signed Maurice Johnston and when they (publicly anyway) broke over 100 years of a sectarian “tradition’ and signed a Catholic.

This is not a comparible signing, and no signing by old Rangers should be compared to Celtic who have, and always have had an open to all policy.

Signing fans of new or old Rangers , are all just footballers, at Celtic, we can’t have and don’t need a Maurice Johnston moment.

Though it’s a smashing GIRUY, to me anyway.

  11. Good evening folks, not posted in a while, but as always enjoy lurking daily.

On the Scott Allan transfer, if it goes through it’s an interesting bit of business. A good young prospect, needs a bit of development in his work rate on the pitch in my opinion, but I think he can improve his fitness and overall play under Ronny. Great passer of a ball.

Led to believe he will be on three times the wage he would have been had he gone to Sevco.

For all the folks who worry about the possible promotion of Sevco to the top league next year, I think this transfer (if it’s concluded) illustrates the gulf between ourselves and the new club.

The young lad is bought for a relatively modest transfer fee, at the moment I would imagine a squad player who has the potential to improve and perhaps be a future regular starter in the team, and perhaps sell on value if he develops. That’s really it from Ronny’s point of view I think.

From the Sevco point of view, If the reporting is correct on the Internet, Sevco’s payment would have been in instalments, they could not afford the fee outright. He would have been straight in to their team as a mainstay, probably playing every week.

The huge gulf between the playing squads and finances is brought in to focus by this transfer. Sevco are miles behind us both on and off the field.

Spoke to a very good source today from the Hibs coaching staff and they are absolutely delighted with their side of the deal. They rate Dylan higher than Scott and to get Liam plus cash also Alan Stubbs couldnt keep the smile off his face.Being of a big Celtic connection also he admits its a great deal for both clubs with young Liam getting some game time.

  23. ….Allan is perfectly right to pursue his dream of playing for [New] Rangers. It is what the kid wants, what he claims he has dreamed about, and who is anyone to decry him for it?

Well you put it like thatMr Spiers, who indeed.

Celtic’s meddling and posturing seems to have robbed the Bhoy of his dreams.

Isn’t the verbs from the Rangers’ media people interesting.
