Clyde flows west but tide of football history flows east to Parkhead

574

Dalglish, we are told, ran to his bedroom to rip posters off the wall, in case Sean Fallon would see them and reconsider, but Celtic have always been open to all. Kenny will tell you, he was assured Rangers were preparing to sign him, but this was Celtic. In 1967. He knew which way the tide of history was flowing.

Sean’s boss, The Boss, once spent his free Saturdays following Rangers. Stein didn’t just become a lapsed Rangers fan, according to his friend and biographer, Archie Macpherson. As Celtic manager, he made it his business to wholly and completely end the dominance they had over the then humble team from Parkhead. I’ll spare the detail of how that sentiment translated down to the vernacular.

Scott Allan made no secret of his boyhood allegiances. He would have gone to Ibrox in a flash, as would so many of our historic greats, but this decision came down to a simple truth. The basic salary on offer at Celtic is around three times what the jungle drums were offering across the city. This disparity means it’s not just about the money, it’s about that tide of history, which Kenny Dalglish knew so well.

Today is witness to one more veil being peeled off, exposing more of the consequences of what happened when Rangers decided not to make provisions for the inevitable challenge to their aggressive tax avoidance schemes. Their Discounted Options Scheme was found to be illegal, as were several of their Employee Benefit Trusts, with the remainder subject to appeal, but the club went to the wall because that inevitable challenge made it impossible for them to borrow other people’s money.

Liquidation followed and hundreds of creditors were left unpaid, but while a newco from such ashes could change their name to Rangers and wear the same jerseys, it was always going to look like an off-key tribute act. This was never going to be about three years in the lower leagues.

  6. CELTIC are delighted to announce that Scott Allan has joined Celtic on a four-year deal from Hibernian.

And Celtic supporters will be able to welcome the highly-rated midfielder to Paradise when he is officially unveiled at the home of the Champions just before the 3pm kick-off at this Saturday’s Premiership game against Inverness Caley Thistle.

The 23-year-old began his career with Dundee United before moving to West Bromwich Albion in 2012. After two years with the English club, he returned to Scotland, joining Hibernian last year. Now he’s swapped the green and white of the Edinburgh side for the green and white Hoops of the Champions.

Speaking exclusively to the official Celtic website, Scott said: “I am absolutely delighted to sign for Celtic, such a fantastic club. It is such an honour to be given this opportunity and I can’t wait to get started and play my part in bringing success to Celtic and our supporters.

“There are so many exciting challenges ahead for us now in Scotland and in Europe and I am looking forward to being part of all that lies ahead. I know a number of players well at the club already, so it will be great to team up with these lads again as well as all my other new team-mates, and I know we will work hard together to bring more good times to our fans.

“I know the high-quality of players at the club and I know it will be a big personal challenge for me but it’s one I’m ready for and one I am relishing.

“I would like to thank the many fans who have already welcomed me to the club. I really appreciate this support.”

Celtic manager Ronny Deila said: “We’re really pleased to welcome Scott to Celtic. He’s a player of huge potential and someone who is hungry for success, a young player who can have a big future at our club.”

Everyone at Celtic is delighted that Scott has joined the club and wishes him every success for the future.

We’re doing fine thanks , looking forward to seeing our team tomorrow.

Will it be loads of beer and take away while KT is back home?

I hope all is well in one of my favourite cities, Toronto. My pal and I had a great time the week we spent there . I had to get my picture taken at the subway station called Pape.

Just to put a note on the blog for those around the park early tomorrow. Celtic Graves Society has a commemoration for Johnny Campbell at St Peter’s, Dalbeth 12pm. These aren’t sombre events, rather each one is a memorable Celtic get-together.

Also, good luck to the Celts later and all our loan Celts this week-end, especially Connor McManus and Michael Duffy at Recreation Park. Get in the team and score some goals, bhoys. We’re supporting all of you.

  11. What is the Stars on

Has Scott allan signed for Sevco yet. …

    Oh dearie me

Sure he was no good anyway

  12. Ps the wee mhan is sound

    :)))))))))))))

Wife says I’m worried about the wean ,what happens if we dont win:))).

nothing to worry about BOSS, from the moment his eyes spring open in the morning it is operation Celtic day,

1st thing he will see will be his clobber for the day, hanging up for him,

as we eat we will make plans and predict scores & scorers,

Then it’s “uniform time “as I smile through the tears :)))

then it’s onto the bus early doors, telling anybody that will listen that this big bhoy is going to his 1st Celtic game.

Then as we get of the bus and start to mingle with other fans,we will say Hail Hail to every Tim we see ,

As we approach the stadium but not yet seeing its full beauty ,its buy his very own scarf and tammy(he has plenty but this one will be a special one).

then it’s turn the corner and booooooooooom there it will stand before us PARADISE in all its spleandor,

Even though he will probably be fed up getting his photo taken by his papa & strangers his papa has asked to take photos of us ,

we will then walk the full lenght of the stadium from the away end at the corner of the LL stand all the way round being told what I know of the heroes hanging from the banners, all the way round to the front door, pointing out “bricks with family names on them.

Then its Brother Wilfred , jinky & jock.

After that its CQN corner time to meet more good folk that I have met on my journey, then and only then its time for the Game ,

The moment we walk into the stadium, I hope will last him a life time then

He wants to sing Willie Maley, let the people sing and Cmon you bhoys in green .

We will watch the game till the final whistle no matter the score then we will leave the stadium with the rest of our Celtic Family before going to McDonalds(I dont like to )but he has put in a special request so who am I to deny it, then its getting picked up by his aunt and we head for home , so as I say win lose or draw the game is only part of the experience of following the Celtic,

Sorry for going on but I,m buzzin about tomorrow 54 and I will struggle to sleep tonight:))))))))

Ps The Boss is also reassured.

  13. The game on Wednesday was weird.

We had 25 attempts on goal and ended up drawing 2-2.

I would guess no bookies payed out on the Correct score.

Tomorrow could be an equally unpredictable game with the Malmo game in mind.

  14. Dallas

    Utterly delighted.

Looking forward to Scott Allan ‘playing in the hole’ – wherever the feck that is. ;-)

What a week to be a Tim Celtic at CP on a Saturday a 3.00pm then Malmo.

    p.s.

JC2, i had conveniently placed Jim ‘Mello’ Melrose away in the darkest recess of my mind.

His main contribution to us was scoring at Tannadice then giving our support a two fingered salute.
