Taking a pop at Celtic, vulnerable Heynckes

403

I’m not going to tell you it’s right to post tickets by Special Delivery, or pass on a £7 charge, because I know many would, if given the choice, opt to take their chance on regular mail, with a lower (or zero) charge. The value of Special Delivery only really kicks in when your tickets have yet to arrive but all your pals have theirs. Which isn’t going to happen to all of us.

What I will draw to your attention is the gleeful rush to print an inaccurate story that the club gave fans no option to collect tickets in person, thereby forcing them to pay a Special Delivery charge, running in one of the country’s newspapers of Record yesterday.

There are probably upwards of 100 decisions made by Celtic each week. While clearly the club get most right, they absolutely get some wrong and others remain open to debate. If you are going to have a pop, at least pick on something they’ve actually done, not something you are fantasising about.

Or seriously upgrade your fantasies. Having to write, “Earlier we wrongly reported there was no option to collect from Celtic Park but you can in fact pick up from the club ticket office” is just demeaning.

Jupp Heynckes (72) looks like getting the job of preparing Bayern Munich for the Celtic doubleheader. There’s little Heynckes doesn’t know about the game, but despite his successes, he’s always struck me as an unlucky manager.

He was the man who ended Real Madrid’s wilderness decades when in 1998 he won their first Champions League since 1966, but was sacked days later. He exacted revenge over Real when at Bayern in the 2012 Champions League semi-final, but blew the final in the Allianze on penalties to Chelsea.

That defeat did for him, although Bayern took most of the following season before announcing he would be replaced by Pep Guardiola in the summer of 2013. Heynckes duly destroyed Guardiola’s Barcelona on the way to winning another Champions League, before the door hit him on his bum on the way out.  Despite his glories, a vulnerability surrounds him.  This is a Champions League winner you can look in the eye and sack, apparently.

I hope that vulnerability remains for a few weeks yet.

NEW CQN PODCAST FROM CELTIC PARK ON SATURDAY

Kevin Graham is back with a new CQN Podcast from Saturday. He talks to supporters on the bus on the way to Parkhead, interviews John Paul Taylor outside the ground and captures the atmosphere and action inside the ground before getting some more supporters’ views on the bus home after an eventful afternoon at Celtic Park.

Apologies for a few sweary words in this podcast near the end.

Aye,BT forwarded your text. Ya lucky sod-though there are a few philistines who think that the station is the best thing about Kilwinning!

I mentioned it on here about teatime.

I think HOTSMOKED might be recovering from the stress of watching Scotland last night. Our secret weapon came good-hard to concentrate for a full 90 minutes against a team in pink, eventually you just have to laugh.

Just reading back last night’s posts; I hardly missed a Scotland game at Hampden from about 65 to 80, mainly because it was a half hour walk from Castlemilk. I reckon at least 50% of Scotland fans were Deadco supporters and I can vouch that not all were bigots, including my mates who I often stood in the Mt Florida end with. I remember their embarrassment at the sash being sung, and they were first to admit that Jinky was world class and that only him and Best were ahead of their own Willie Henderson. The worst abuse I ever heard at Hampden (Mt Florida) for a Scotland player was reserved for Dalglish, a guy in my opinion the best post-war British footballer.

When you take stock, Jinky about ten caps less than Henderson. Dalglish inexplicably dropped before he could beat George Young’s record. Murdoch a disgraceful 12 caps, and worst of all Jimmy McGrory, a man in the Guinness book for hits goal scoring feats, Gerd Muller of his time, 7/8 caps? (btw Alan Morton 31).

I said earlier that not all of the large Deadco support at Hampden were bigots, but the SFA certainly pandered to those who were.

My first game was mid 60s V Brazil and attended quite a few until 82. The Maestro and Frank McGarvey both made their debuts IIRC. I lived in Mt Florida at the time and was a driver in the Post Office. I finished my shift at the Vicky road office(Big South) and headed home for a quick change and nipped over to Hamdump (Huns end) just in time for kick off. 20 minutes into the game and Frank gets carried off. There was a group of deadco fans30/40 of them halfway down the terracing. As Franks being stretcherd off, they started chanting “ Frank McGarveys wife’s a W—e”. Never been back. I always like to see them win though and pray that all the Celtic Bhoys do well.

    Scotland eh ?

Yeah the SFA did their usual.

There was Huns aplenty and few Tims to support the national team.

Remember Charlie Nicholas’ international debut against the Swiss ?

There was lots of us there that night and when he scored you heard us sing his name.

Also ended up scrapping with one of the fat gits after he called a Scotland player a Fenian B. How times change things……the Fenian was Mo Johnston.

Six Celtic players on the team . A former Celtic manager in charge too.

    Change does happen.

It’s the easy option to leave them to it ? Perhaps, the wrong option ?

That would simply entrench divisions. Worth noting that a large number of Scotland fans are other clubs’ supporters these days ?

    GLASGOW’S GREEN AND WHITE .

MAYBE SCOTLAND IS A DIFFERENT SHADE OF BLUE ?

  22. Can’t help but think FTSFA Regan was harking back to his cricket under the lights innovation

  23. My Last Scotland game was against the Republic of Ireland back in the mid 80’s. I was in the Celtic end. Scotland were losing1-0 when a chance was missed. I’m sure it was Mo Johnston. Anyway, a Hun in the crowd called him a useless fenian b…..d. A guy next to me says “hey, I’m a fenian b…..d as well” The Hun then points to the enclosure and says “you want to be over there then” (that’s were the Ireland fans were. At that point I would say at least half a dozen guys around me upped and left. I should have left too but stayed until the end. I never went back
