1200 hungry weans, ill-conceived Act

813

Apologies for absence yesterday, the day got away from me.  The blog would have said something like, “really pleased Celtic pushed back so vocally against the illiberal and ill-conceived Offensive Behaviour Act”, but with less brevity.

Shortly before Christmas we launched the campaign to fund the construction of a school kitchen in Malawi through Mary’s Meals to mark the 10th anniversary of Celtic Quick News.  The project would cost £7000 and to get us there we scheduled a St Patrick’s Day dinner dance for next Friday, 14 March.

8 days out I am delighted to inform you the target money has been raised, Mary’s Meals already have £7000 in their bank, the project is officially funded and construction plans are underway.

That the money was raised ahead of the event was a surprise, although after 10 years of watching Celtic fans go about their business in this manner, it shouldn’t have been.

We received a remarkable donation from Patrick Foley’s Irish Bar & Restaurant in Gent, and Barney Vallely’s Irish Pub in Cologne, who between them raised €2600.

You don’t think of Gent and Cologne as being big ‘Celtic towns’.  I’m sure they are not, but there enough Celtic fans in each city to form a proper community.  Their work has been incredible and a real inspiration.  Thank you to Patrick, Charlie and their patrons.  Special thanks to Kolncelt, who orgainsed the entire effort, but has had to cancel his trip to Glasgow next week.

This gave us a problem, of course, The Show is going ahead next week, but the kitchen at the Kholoni Primary School is already paid for, what will be our focus next week.  Here is a remind of what that £7000 is going to achieve:

Mary’s Meals feed 822,142 kids each day across some of the most impoverished areas of the world.  The global average annual cost per child is £10.70, and is only £7 in Malawi, where the Kholoni Primary School is.

Kitchens are brick constructed and fully stocked with stoves, pots, serving utensils, mugs and cutlery.  They also have a wall-mounted blackboard, so the room can be used as a classroom outside of meal times.

The charity started in 2002 when founder Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow met a mother dying of AIDS, and her child, whose only ambition was to have enough food to eat.

93% of money raised goes directly to the needy and, where possible, the 65,000 volunteers who keep the project running are drawn from parents and relatives of the children being fed.

The impact in Malawi, 17th poorest country by UN measures, is significant.  Mary’s Meals provide a daily meal to 20% of the countries primary school aged children.  The impact is more than just feeding the hungry, two years after a Mary’s Meals project in Malawi starts, school enrolment is up an average of 30%, leading to higher educational achievements, and a better chance in life.

I’m open to ideas on what to focus on next week but my instinct is to get back onto Mary’s Meals and ask where they next need a kitchen.

A couple of pairs of tickets have become available for Friday’s CQteN St Patrick’s Day at the Kerrydale Suite, Celtic Park.  £50 per ticket, dinner, dancing, two acts, Irish dancers; it is shaping up to be quite an event.  Email Tony if you want to be there, cqnbooks@gmail.com

We have a donations page for CQN Mary’s Meals’ projects, if you would like to help out, you can do so here.

Auldheid, I’m listening to the podcast you linked and re the safe standing, can you educate this dramming thicko. JPT is talking about “rail seats”. What are they? He mentions Dortmund and Hanover but I’m not familiar with their grounds.

Any pictures of what he’s talking about?

Weefra, I’m a clean living carnivore, I was going to ask if I could purchase one of your beasts, obviously after the specific skills of a damn fine butcher had been applied to it. I’d even be willing to give it a go myself with ma fishing knife but I’d need a few specimens to practice on and it could get pricey:-))

That will be Sandy Lane golf course. As I don’t play golf I have never used it, sneaked onto the hotel beach a few times mind you.

On the same vein I was enjoying a cool Banks beer of an evening down in St Lawrence Gap talking to a Dublin man who had a house in the area and was a regular visitor to Barbados.

DD’s name came up because of the Barbados connection and this guy spoke very highly of him and how he had gone out of his way to help out someone in a bit of financial trouble. Not big money to DD but it was to the guy he helped and not something DD needed to get involved in at all and the fella I spoke to was very generous in his praise.

Can I back up something my lunch partner ( God help me! ) has said?

Auldheid and I first talked outside Celtic park after an AGM– might be 3-4 years ago now and both of us came at the whole issue of Celtic PLC from the same angle– namely that a PLC structure wasn’t the best and that it would be better if we had a membership scheme which brought about greater fan engagement.

Over the piece we shared some thoughts on the matter and Pat sent one of my mad charity ideas — the idea of the Green mile — into the club which resulted in me being asked to go and see the then heid bummer at the Celtic Charity Foundation– although it wasn’t called that then.

That lead me to end sitting on a committee — and i have avoided committees like the plague all my life — which was designed to promote greater fan engagement in the charitable ethos of the club and to try and persuade the club to do more and different things for charity.

A wee while later, I suggested that the committee be widened and as a result asked Paul67 to join the group — which continues to evolve and grow.

The last meeting I went to was last Saturday before the Aberdeen game.

Now, I come from a business background. I have been up close and personal with Celtic personnel in relation to the charity stuff and in relation to CQN books, CQ10 and so on.

    Latterly also with Res 12.

In many instances, I would do things differently to the way the club personnel do things. I think they are sometimes not radical enough or perhaps responsive enough– equally I think working at Celtic Park can be like being in a Goldfish bowl. I also know ( quite separately ) more than a few ex Celtic employees who will tell tales of why they left and all that– some of which does not show Celtic PLC in the best of lights.

However, the people I have met don’t strike me as anything other than either Celtic fans or people who are truing their best. Sometimes I think Celtic employ too many people who are fans — and should employ people who might be a bit more hard nosed in terms of dealing with authorities and so on— Celtic fans tend to be protective of the club and its reputation and that gets played upon.

Sometimes I think some people get the impression that if you work closely with the club you will be swayed and can be bought off by the prestige of it all– yet inside Celtic park is just like any other office building and it is not nearly as plush or impressive or intimidating as many I have been in over the years.

What I am trying to say is that Celtic PLC can do things better than they do– God I have at least one area where I could scream at them for missing the point and the opportunities — but the people that are there– many of them at least — do what they think is right on a daily basis and at all times ( as far as I can see ) try to serve the interests of the club.

That doesn’t make them and their decisions immune from criticism and scrutiny — It just makes the scrutiny and criticism reasonable and hopefully progressive as opposed to being merely negative.

That’s the first time I’ve heard JPT talking and I enjoyed listening. There more than a few questions he couldn’t answer and some answers were vague but he comes across as a very honest plausible guy. I look forward to the next interview after the next forum to see if any of the unanswered questions and vagueness have been clarified.

Fan zones, cafe’s and face painters. I’m good with the first two but if they ever need to paint vaguepunters coupon they’d need to hire the dulux team and stick a broom handle up the arse of wan of them fluffy dugs to use as a roller. The big lanarkshire gangster’s got more front than blackpool.

  12. BRTH @ 00.44 –

Make of it what I will?

    Apropos of DD –

    Not sure why you

    a) choose to advertise just how much better-informed you are than the commonalty

    b) elect to regale said commonalty with some sort of gnostic allusion, rather than making simple, unambiguous statements…

Why not be direct in your uncommonly well-informed assessment of DD? The rest of us are pretty much devoid of such data, and when someone elects to parade their very special knowledge, we tend to wonder, “What the fricken hell does this individual wish to say?”

You describe a DD, seemingly nuts about the gowff, but who eschews talking about gowff whilst playing gowff as a direct consequence of his continuous obsession with the minutiae of Celtic and the running of Celtic. Apparently the man’s in something of an OCD mode, mashie in his mitt yet dead set on talking Celtic, Celtic, Celtic.

I can but assume that were he to give his attention to The Gowff, his handicap might be lower.

I can but assume that for some terribly odd reason, he obsesses (q.v.s) over Celtic whilst indulging in his beloved gowff, yet elects to contribute bugger all to the club; or at least, bugger all that is readily identifiable to those of us not privy to the inside info.

Billionaire obsessive, requires daily team news, views scouting videos, and yet figures mainly as an entity in the accouts, owning a shitload of preference shares. Okay, nothing wrong with that characterisation – save that it’s pretty much unbelievable…

BRTH, is big Dessie really worth £1800 million? Wow, that’s more than enough to bring Messi to paradise next season including his buy out clause, buy the continent of Africa and still leave him enough petty cash to get lessons that will see him shoot less than his age off the ladies tee’s.

I always wished our club could have a sugardaddy (akin to the fivers for tenners Dave who wheeled his ass oota the clusterfack over on the southside) to splurge money on our collective vision of Celtic.

I’ll look out for Dessie at this year’s Dunhill Cup and be sure to chuck a fiver in his cap.

You have never questioned, even in your own head, whether our club’s “representatives” are liars?

    _______________________________________________________________________

Never occurred to me that our club`s representatives and by that I mean the Board would intentionally deceive the supporters by lying to us.

What could their motivation possibly be?

Course, haven`t lived in Scotland for 30 years. You may be able to enlighten me.

Frankly,I would find it difficult to support an organisation which I KNEW was lying to me.

I`m not interested in suspicion.I like certainty.

    And the presumption of innocence.
