Celtic’s overloaded midfield

147

Our biggest concern for the run-in must be the period where Celtic have been unable to control the middle of the park in our four games this month.    For at least half the games against Newco, St Mirren and Aberdeen, ball progression was poor.

Sunday’s second half at Dundee started in the same manner.  The thought crossed my mind that Tony Doherty had figured us out, a notion I also had during the second period at Ibrox.  Is overloading central mid enough to stop Celtic?

Play changed on Sunday when Tomoki Iwata replaced Callum McGregor and Adam Idah came on for Kyogo, but I think an assumption that the problem lies with Callum’s fitness is too convenient.

Adam was able to collect and retain forward passes, giving options to the midfield that were not there with Kyogo.  This resolved the problem until after Dundee’s fortuitous goal, which pivoted play one more time.

Each of the four sides we have left in the league this season have been able to knock us off our game for a spell.  Kilmarnock and Hearts have been remarkably successful.  All four will face Celtic with a plan for our midfield; getting the better of them should be Brendan Rodgers’ priority.

AN T, just got dumped out last night when I changed page – never happened before and was a nuisance getting back in. I’m one of the lucky ghuys that don’t get bothered by adverts, etc so that was new to me.

  11. Morning all, am I right in thinking there’s a scenario where, if we lose the derby, and Sevco win all their other games, then they go into their final game needing a big goal difference boost: a potential Dunfermline-type situation?

  12. Weebobbycollins on

Fassreifen…as it stands, if they beat us 2-0, the goal difference would be down to 1 in our favour…so, as you can see it will very much depend on the scores in the remaining matches.

Don’t worry if it goes to the last game then hertz with try their best to win the game 🙄

  14. Weebobbycollins on

What I really mean is it wouldn’t necessarily need to be a big goal difference. However, I am hopeful it won’t come down to that scenario.

  15. Thanks, yeah I hadn’t thought of it that way. Enormous pressure on the ref to give a Yang-style red card in the Derby and a couple of Tav pens. And then Hearts do the rest.

  16. Weebobbycollins on

Prestonpans Bhoys…you’re right, if they required a big win against the jambos I’m sure they would achieve it and not necessarily because the minis would lie down to them, just that their own season would be over and there would be nothing to play for. No resistance. However, the Edinburgh scum will be right up for it this weekend against us. I hope we do them good and proper.

Please God don’t let it come down to the final game.

The mini huns will give them whatever amount of goals they need without doubt.

  20. The Blogger Formerly Known As GM on

I’ll be terrified if we don’t have it won by the final game of the season and it comes down to goal difference.
