Celtic’s overloaded midfield

147

Our biggest concern for the run-in must be the period where Celtic have been unable to control the middle of the park in our four games this month.    For at least half the games against Newco, St Mirren and Aberdeen, ball progression was poor.

Sunday’s second half at Dundee started in the same manner.  The thought crossed my mind that Tony Doherty had figured us out, a notion I also had during the second period at Ibrox.  Is overloading central mid enough to stop Celtic?

Play changed on Sunday when Tomoki Iwata replaced Callum McGregor and Adam Idah came on for Kyogo, but I think an assumption that the problem lies with Callum’s fitness is too convenient.

Adam was able to collect and retain forward passes, giving options to the midfield that were not there with Kyogo.  This resolved the problem until after Dundee’s fortuitous goal, which pivoted play one more time.

Each of the four sides we have left in the league this season have been able to knock us off our game for a spell.  Kilmarnock and Hearts have been remarkably successful.  All four will face Celtic with a plan for our midfield; getting the better of them should be Brendan Rodgers’ priority.

We are a club open to all, and than principle is long established.

Is the present First Minister of Scotland still welcome at Celtic. Many regard him as as a racist. In fact he was branded a ” Blatent Racist ” by the owner of a social media platform that you frequently link to. ?

    Greenpinata.

What do YOU think Gp? Of the above👆

And please do answer what you think Gp

Do you think Mr Yousef is racist for calling out the lack of minorities in the higher echelons of tbe judiciary? I dont!

I would have went further and among all those ‘white men’ that are in positions of power i would have asked how many are

    i)of Catholic in faith

    ii) of irish catholic background.

It took 100 years to get economic parity in the union, but in every poverty related index those of irish catholic background feature large percentages, crime, prison etc.

So in my opinion yup he is very welcome at Celtic.

He was speaking out against the same inculcated and systemic racism used as a barrier to those of irish catholic,ps you also find it down south.

Elon calling out anyone a racist is funny(not haha) in light of that platforms negation of Palestinian point of view since Oct,its not as obvious as Meta facing book as you call it&instagram

And do think bout calling him a racist, you’ll find those jumping on that elon bandwagon loathe Mr Sarwar just as much,

    its not ideological difference,

its ethnic origin and skin pigment

ie they are not white and British.

That is how irrational it is

All I can think of is that it was about the first time we had a sponsor and so CR Smith

I actually have a signed framed shirt on the wall in my gym from the 2005 American tour and specifically the game v Roma in Toronto. It was Coors Light on that trip also. Unusual to see red on a Celtic top. ‘People’s’ was the only other time I recall that.

Yes CR Smith. Good answers by the way. 👍

Sometimes I wish we played with 2 forwards as well Bada. I think we could play 3-5-2 and still allow our fullbacks to do their job and move over the field. I think wee Greg does a great job of that . It would limit who we played on the wing or the fullback position but i think it would be exciting to watch.

Hope everyone is doing well, and keeping their emotions in check during this exciting runin.

    Slainte.

  13. Thanks Bhoyjoebelfast

It helps that I was at 2 of the games !

I was wrong re the other US tour in 2005. It was actually 2004 Tour v Roma in Toronto. A totally forgettable game and trip. The beginning of the post ‘King of Kings’ blues.

It followed an amazing season mind you. Up there with 2016/7. 03/4 saw us win 2 domestic comps and play 16 European ties. Winning 8 Drawing 4 Losing 4. Beating MTK Lyon Anderlecht and Barcelona amongst our wins. Drawing games with Bayern Barcelona and Villarreal.

  14. I would agree that the midfield is overloaded. But not as overloaded as the the bank balance.

I visited Estadio Nacional with the school in June 1969 when the stadium wasn’t much different from when the Lions won there.

I take the family there in June, after some time in ‘Madrid.

  19. Weebobbycollins on

I wish I could remember it like it was yesterday…unfortunately not. However, the bits I do remember are still vivid…ish. The back-heel, the penalty, the equaliser, the winner, the tears, the city centre, the madness, the euphoria, the airport, the flight back home (don’t remember a thing about that…)

I’m surprised the ST renewals isn’t out already, would be astonished if they didn’t add an extra 3-5% onto it…..irrespective of how much is already in the bank!

  25. I pray BR wins this league. Will be my best ever.Injuries,Referees, some hostility to the manager.Fall outs between Board and GB.Too many projects signed at one time.New manager, trying to replace,Ange. Not easy.

My main cribs with BR,are as follows.Dropped Hatate.Tried to change Kyogo’s position.Cast aside two, seemingly good CHs,one named Sweden’s best defender the previous season, and now a Swedish international.Nope, you tell me.The other has performed very well when played.Changed the team to possession football,to the detriment of our brilliant striker.

IMHO,I have no idea why these things happened, what his thoughts were, but if we win this league,I ,personally will be looking carefully at whoever we sign for next season.

  26. TB it’s an interesting analysis but I don’t believe BR has changed anything and it is the opposition that have sussed it.

We still invert full backs, we still push midfielders wide and we have always been possession based.

Watch Spurs now and see them keep possession, pass back and sideways looking for the run and inside pass to wingers or full backs to cross. From where I sit that’s still how we try to play but I think that is far harder against the low blocks we face every week there is so little space.

It could be argued that BR should have changed more as APs “new” system has been somewhat sussed.

Big picture is that it’s hard to breakdown low blocks even here in SPFL you need better, more skilled players to find that gap and exploit it.

Hope we can get it done and have a rethink thereafter
