1200 hungry weans, ill-conceived Act

813

Apologies for absence yesterday, the day got away from me.  The blog would have said something like, “really pleased Celtic pushed back so vocally against the illiberal and ill-conceived Offensive Behaviour Act”, but with less brevity.

Shortly before Christmas we launched the campaign to fund the construction of a school kitchen in Malawi through Mary’s Meals to mark the 10th anniversary of Celtic Quick News.  The project would cost £7000 and to get us there we scheduled a St Patrick’s Day dinner dance for next Friday, 14 March.

8 days out I am delighted to inform you the target money has been raised, Mary’s Meals already have £7000 in their bank, the project is officially funded and construction plans are underway.

That the money was raised ahead of the event was a surprise, although after 10 years of watching Celtic fans go about their business in this manner, it shouldn’t have been.

We received a remarkable donation from Patrick Foley’s Irish Bar & Restaurant in Gent, and Barney Vallely’s Irish Pub in Cologne, who between them raised €2600.

You don’t think of Gent and Cologne as being big ‘Celtic towns’.  I’m sure they are not, but there enough Celtic fans in each city to form a proper community.  Their work has been incredible and a real inspiration.  Thank you to Patrick, Charlie and their patrons.  Special thanks to Kolncelt, who orgainsed the entire effort, but has had to cancel his trip to Glasgow next week.

This gave us a problem, of course, The Show is going ahead next week, but the kitchen at the Kholoni Primary School is already paid for, what will be our focus next week.  Here is a remind of what that £7000 is going to achieve:

Mary’s Meals feed 822,142 kids each day across some of the most impoverished areas of the world.  The global average annual cost per child is £10.70, and is only £7 in Malawi, where the Kholoni Primary School is.

Kitchens are brick constructed and fully stocked with stoves, pots, serving utensils, mugs and cutlery.  They also have a wall-mounted blackboard, so the room can be used as a classroom outside of meal times.

The charity started in 2002 when founder Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow met a mother dying of AIDS, and her child, whose only ambition was to have enough food to eat.

93% of money raised goes directly to the needy and, where possible, the 65,000 volunteers who keep the project running are drawn from parents and relatives of the children being fed.

The impact in Malawi, 17th poorest country by UN measures, is significant.  Mary’s Meals provide a daily meal to 20% of the countries primary school aged children.  The impact is more than just feeding the hungry, two years after a Mary’s Meals project in Malawi starts, school enrolment is up an average of 30%, leading to higher educational achievements, and a better chance in life.

I’m open to ideas on what to focus on next week but my instinct is to get back onto Mary’s Meals and ask where they next need a kitchen.

A couple of pairs of tickets have become available for Friday’s CQteN St Patrick’s Day at the Kerrydale Suite, Celtic Park.  £50 per ticket, dinner, dancing, two acts, Irish dancers; it is shaping up to be quite an event.  Email Tony if you want to be there, cqnbooks@gmail.com

We have a donations page for CQN Mary’s Meals’ projects, if you would like to help out, you can do so here.

It was something on those lines JPT mentioned in the podcast plus it would be the German seating model that would be used.

Re the A9 and average speed cameras, how many drivers have been charged with speeding offences on the A/M 77 or the M80. As far as I am aware, and I stand corrected, very few. The report I got on the M80, was that only the first and last camera were active. Again, I stand corrected. But I agree with your sentiment that the A9 requires drastic action to make drivers obey the rules. You will notice I am not blaming the road, there is no such a thing as a dangerous road, unless there is a absence of road markings. Being a retired car and LGV/PCV driving instructor, I truly believe this.

That corresponds to my recollections of the era.

    However,

“There were tangible instances of anti-Celtic bias, as in the de-selection of King Kenny on the brink of breaking George Young’s record, which he later broke anyway, albeit as a Liverpool player, but many issues of perceived bias were more mixed than we would prefer to see.”

Sorry…don’t have that size in stock, I do have a product called seleck -a -box, which shows me, there are a selection of self tappers from 6-10’s, however it doesn’t state what length they are. How many are u looking for?

I can check in the morning and if that size is in the box, I can let you know.

We also have a place in rutherglen ( I’m in paisley ) which are showing these boxes, if that’s easier for u.

    I’ll let u know.

I think the changes that will flow from introducing the SLO will take a while to be felt but having someone making sure issues are addressed timeously (and that can be a problem) will stop small issues festering into big ones.

One day I’ll write a book with examples of which Res12 is one.

Not sure what you are disagreeing with.

KD failed to break the Scotland consecutive appearances record while at Celtic. He went on to break that record as a Liverpool player.

I too, would exonerate Willie Ormond from the decision. Willie was the man who picked Kenny on most of the previous 24occasions before he “chose” to mysteriously drop him. I believe the word came from higher up and Willie was guilty only of cowardice, as were Kenny’s Scotland team-mates in witnessing this abuse.

That would tend to suggest that they work, does it not?

My experience of driving where there are permanent average speed cameras is that drivers drive within the limit.

Temporary ones eg where there are roadworks, are a bit different because people don’t understand them.

I remember driving on the M1 in North Yorkshire, inside lane. Extensive road works with average speed cameras for 15-20 miles. Flashy mini roars up in the middle lane, sees the camera, slows down, so we’re side by side, then slams the accelerator down as we go under the camera. And yes the driver was a blonde.

  17. Tommy Gemmell has now completed his All The Best book for CQN and we will get it ready for printing over the next few days. He has been ably assisted by Alex Gordon who used to be sports editor at Sunday Mail. Alex is Celtic to the core and as a matter of fact I can tell you that the Lisbon Lions know him very well and trust him totally. He was just at the end of his time at the Sunday Mail around the time that Celtic were in crisis in the 90s. Alex refused to allow the then editor to publish the coffin outside Celtic Park image but the first Sunday after he left this image appeared. Anyone who read Daily Record / Sunday Mail in the years before that fateful day maybe didn’t realise what had just happened.

Those papers had caught a virus and it has poisoned them ever since. We are going to write about this in CQN Magazine.

Alex – the old hack that he is – likes a pint. He will be at CQTEN next week and I hope that BRTH gives him a special mention. He will be sitting at a table with some very famous Celtic faces – and if he does get a mention and I start a round of applause then I urge you to join in. This guy deserves it. Just like Paul has fought our corner in the new media in current times, Alex fought the Celtic cause in a hostile old media in decades gone by.

One of the guys at that table next week at CQTEN will tell you all about Alex. He is none other than Yogi Bear and boy does he have some stories to tell! And maybe the Big Shot will get a wee round of applause too.

Tommy answered all the CQNer questions and the book ends with Tommy telling us that he is having a wee greet to himself after reading the warmth this blog showed him in the questions asked. He has answered every single one.

If you’re going to be driving on a road that has them (and most journeys people make are done on a regular basis) you know in advance you won’t be speeding and you adjust your time frame accordingly.
