20th century football rivalries won’t survive

1358

I remember the days (as a kid) when I’d get excited about Scotland-England games. At the time the countries were neck-and-neck in the number of wins each had over the other, we knew we’d punched well above our weight for a century. Since then, the inevitable verdict of demographics has taken its toll.

Now we know we’re a small nation, inconsequential to the football world, and we’ve even starved of developmental resources compared to the riches that ploughs into the English FA from Premier League TV deals each season.

The historical rivalry remains but I don’t feel it anymore and surely English fans care even less. They will have to dig deep to muster anything more than an interest in the three points available tonight, having long since moved onto Argentina and Germany for their rivalry. And Iceland, of course (forgive me).

Great sporting rivalries can endure for generations but that doesn’t mean they’ll last forever. Circumstances can change causing both sides to lose interest and find others to do battle with. None of our 20th century rivalries will survive. If we could bloody the nose of Barcelona for a third time in the 21st century later this month, our hit rate would place the Catalans in the crosshairs.  Bring it on.

Bada Bing, the night of was a great watch.

A crime show done in a different way to the norm.

I noticed on the credits , the late James Gandolfini , was an executive producer for the series.

I wonder if he was going to play the part of John Stone?

    ————-

It was based on a BBC show which Tony Soprano liked and had been trying to make before his death.

I thought it started out great but was a but meh by the end, a few to many that will never happen type moments. Still worst the watch though.

  2. Evening all.

BRTH 14.42. You have a wonderful gift J with words that capture a whole night in one post.

Nearly as impressive as your fundraising.

An additional bonus from last night is I can now call the Minx by her proper name !

Hugely impressed by what the Celtic Foundation is achieving.

On the best 11 , I can only pass judgment on not only those I’ve watched in the flesh but those I remember making a huge impact although I was not even a teenager.

McGrain , Dalgleish & Lennox are then a must.

J.Doyle & T .Burns are included for being favourites with matching passion. My left back is young Tierney because I rate him so highly.

Paul McStay for being Paul McStay. For Larsson see above.

Central defenders are Reiper & Virgil.

    Keeper. Boruc. Fit version.

Formation ? Any you like. HH

  3. Seriously.

If only to save us any more embarrassments Scotland should withdraw from international competition and only play against handpicked opponents.

  4. I must admit that I like a wee trip down memoey lane when some of us post our thoughts on Celtic past. Beats talking about how rotten the Scottish national team is at least. But then I do not have a life

But now I know that the fragrance or otherwise of Kenny Miller’s partner is the hot topic I can sleep better tonight.

I agree with your verdict on “The night of”.Started out great, then got lost. The Fall,to me was magnificent viewing.Great acting, and great ,graphic, story.

  9. GFTB

    Yeah, I know that.

    I was talking about me.

Paul was great, his display at Ibrox in 1988,in the 2-1 that was vital in winning the league in the centenary year, was heroic.

Murdoch and Auld complemented each other so well, individually superb too.

So that partnership ain’t being broken up for anybody!

I read your C and P on the Miller story.Thank you.Still as clear as mud to me whats going on there.Baffling, although ,I may be slow on the uptake.

Bada Bing gave me a stupid reply when I asked about this today.I will ask him to explain his answer tomorrow.

Seems your best all time Celtic teams are more worthy of a comment.

Some posters could have Stuart Armstrong in midfield, others could have Willie Fernie.Thats how much use that item is.FFS.

I have been told about the Lions since I was a kid, my favourite will always be the Maestro, he got me through the late 80s & early 90s, the 1995 Pierre van Hoojdonk will always be one of my favourite games, for both Paul & Tommy…….my first old firm game was the 1980 cup final when George Mccluskey stole Danny’s goal :-)

My last game was the £42 @ head for the Willie Collum penalty that he never saw, my days of going to games are well by me (for now) our boozer ran a bus that day the 3 bhoys I was went to the game with none of the 4 of us were allowed on it……for punters that know Coatbridge it was the bus from the Bammy….. I always found it hilarious that four good Celtic fans weren’t allowed on CSC bus……..anyway, my life has moved on and by my own admission my Celtic stuff is 99% on here, the day MissGFTB wants to venture into Celtic Park I will be back, but until that day I will bump my gums on here

Jeezo, you’re starting to sound if you were a jinxed, troublesome 90s, last game against oldco pumped 4.2.

Missing the lions, thinking McStay was the greatest. :-))

Thanks for the message earlier, genuinely appreciated.

Greatest Celts. My Dad always said Charles Patrick Tully, followed by Jinky.

He loved Dalglish too, he said he was always a step ahead of the opposition and sometimes his team mates.

My first Celtic game was 1970, but for me Larsson is the best I’ve seen.

  24. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

The Huddle, Beatbhoy to and Voguepunter, thanks for the replies about the Night of and Michael Williams.

Just like our views on Celtic and the best 11 players we have seen in the hoops, we can agree to disagree. There were some far fetched bits in the night of but all in all, I enjoyed it.

Michael Williams was also in an episode of the Sopranos. The one where Giacomo Aprile junior was hiding out the projects and Michael Williams played the guy whose flat Giacomo stayed in.

  25. Dallas.

Young Lee, still doing well down at Sunderland.

He’s had an excellent few months and scored a good few goals which is great for a midfielder.

Yeah, I had a great view of Tel’s bullet header from the Celtic end of the South Stand.

Meant a lot to me that victory.

I had stood earlier that season in agony at Mordor as they went medieval on our ass.

5-1, nearly half an hour to go, if I’m remembering correctly. 7-1 was under threat, as they seemed to score every time they were in the vicinity of our Ian Andrews occupied goal.

I was almost happy by the time the whistle went at full time.

So revenge was particularly sweet that day.

Jimmynotpaul, I hope you are keeping well and your attacks become few and far between.

There was some turnout at Davie’s funeral last week.

I was out yesterday with a few guys up from London that Davie got to know through work.

We had a good night recalling things Davie had said and done.

    He was some man

    Wow, great spot!

Remember that episode, but obviously he wasn’t that well known at that time.

Great excuse to watch it again!

  30. JNP

One of my wee nephews who is now in his 30s with 2 daughters at high school when he was 14 he actually started crying one day when the Bank if Scotland sponsored 11 beat us, think Laudrop scored, he said “uncle do we ever beat them” his two daughters now live their season tickets, he phoned me after the 5-1 game and said… you were right

My words were “you will enjoy our wins far more than being annoyed at the cheats beating us”

The fabric of being a Celtic fan is certainly not a god given right to win :-) ny the way JNP am a rubbish jinx, 5-1, 4-1 & the Ehiogu dodgy pen are my only defeats, I have a hundred percent record against the new team :-)

  31. Beatbhoy.

That horrible 5.1 game, if I recall what saved us from 7 was Souness came on a sub and started showboating.

    Terry og. Nov 88.

One of my daughters was born a couple of days before the game.

I was told I wasn’t allowed to attend the game unless she had been born before it. Thankfully she arrived a week early.

Did Archdeacon score our 3rd that day?

If so, who scored the second?

  32. JNP

    5-1 & 4-1

MacAvennie & Chris Morris both scored first, only 2 Celtic games I have attended there….. maybe I am a jinx :-)

  33. Mark McGhee, I think.

Thought Stark scored the third, but not sure.

Could’ve scored another 3 or 4 that day quite easily.
