£4m up for grabs for Celtic in qualifiers

253

Champions League qualifiers do not concern us directly this season, but their outcome will determine whether we ‘earn’ several million pounds.  Two potential qualifiers: Copenhagen and Dinamo Zagreb have higher 10-year coefficients than Celtic.  That metric rewards qualification on a sliding scale.  Celtic will earn an extra £2m if both fail to qualify, half of that if only one reaches the group stage.

Copenhagen were held to a 0-0 draw at home in the first leg against Sparta Prague last night.  Dinamo’s game at AEK Athens was postponed after a fatality, the tie will conclude on 19 August.  We can be moderately hopeful of collecting that £2m.

Scotland earns 10% of the UK TV pot, a rough approximation of our population split.  Newco will earn 40% of that 10% if they reach the group stage; if not, Celtic will retain all of it.  That’s slightly over £2m up for grabs, pushing the total in-play variable north of £4m.

Newco’s first challenge is to overcome Servette, who defended their way to a penalty kicks triumph against Genk in the last round.  They travel to Glasgow without a handful of injured and suspended players, and one who failed to get a visa from UK immigration authorities (Wimbledon is OK for Russians, football competitions don’t matter, even if you are a Cameroon-born, Cameroon international which Russian dual citizenship).

PSV Eindhoven are the likely opponents of whoever progresses to the play-off round, which brings an added €5m bonus for reaching that stage.  This is money Newco desperately need; expect full theatrics at Ibrox tonight.

While we can muse on the money, Brendan and the players will only have thoughts for Aberdeen on Sunday.  Automatic qualification is a huge bonus.

  1. They remind me of us in the early stages of the covid season. They manged a win but it’s becoming very clear there’s major issues.

I watched them tonight simply because I joined the Servette supporters club for two games only .

I also watched them on Sunday because I joined the Killie suporters club for one game only .

I know it’s early days and I know it’s only two games , but I would be astonished if the got much better than the turgid crap I’ve seen so far . They are even shitier than last season .

  3. Drambowie,

Only reporting on what their sites are saying. As far as I have read, this figure is accurate, but not only for tonights game, they had a few missing against Genk.

If you dont watch them,or have anything to do with them, not too sure you should be commenting on them.

    Shooting the messenger :-))).

We got a good half hour which was a half hour more than what we were served up at the weekend so that’s something.

That was as I expected- bloody awful.

We are going nowhere under Beale. Dink a cross into the box and hope for the best. What a time to be alive.

Honestly think we have signed the only dud Brighton have signed in last 3 years.

    Just our luck.

    ==========

We won the game easy, the score line makes it seem closer than it was but really we were much better than them the full game.

Their keeper saved them from us scoring another 2 or 3.

    ////////

Only won because they are terrible. No idea how they beat Genk.

Was going to dip in before I walk the dog with Looval lover so thanks for saving me the time.

Can’t wait for Beale hiding in the bushes. Off to Saudis in a season to ‘manage’ with his no mark pal Slippy.

“Aye, ye was right man. We are both shite. Thank feck for this dirty money, eh?”

    Ange to the Spurs

    Slippy to the Saudi’s

    Beale to the bin

    Bratback for the win.

We are a step ahead in spite of what some might say.

  6. Reads like biscuit tin economics to me.

It beyond the realms that there is a business strategy afoot to keep us slightly ahead of the Newco so as our fan base don’t get bored of the domestic football?

  7. We can’t change the landscape on our own yet we still try. We don’t want to be here. We have to shake some shady hands while we walk these paths but we do want away. Euro league, EPL, a Champions cup, who knows but the men in the nice chairs want that as well.

Even if current game has to be staying a step ahead and prepping.

  10. Last night was my 2ND look at Sevco’s new signings.

NOT ONE of them impressed me at all !

DANILO is like a poor mans ” SEBO”.

LAMMERS is a Lang Streak of PISH.

    SIMA is totally clueless.

JOSE CIFENTES …Not much game time as a Sub, but did nothing of note.

    DESSERS…..A total CHUMP……..Useless.

CANTWELL was probably their best player last night, but that wouldnt be difficult in a squad of mediocrity around him. He is an OUT and OUT CHEAT, who constantly ” Plays Up” to the Hun Hordes.

Their ” new” Goalie BUTLAND ALSO looks like a poor mans MACGREGOR, who also looks to ” Play Up” to the Hun Hordes, and HE SHOULD have been yellow carded for his deliberate antics when Servette were trying to take their Penalty.

REFS in the Wummins World Cup, and around the World have been INSTRUCTED to take action against Deliberate Time Wasting and Gamesmanship. The REF last night allowed BUTLAND to get away with BOTH at the Swiss Penalty.

BUTLAND and CANTWELL need serious watching in particular with their antics and cheating. BUTLAND is trying to take a leaf out of MACGREGORS Book.

The Hun players looked to argue about Servettes Penalty award………DESPITE DESSERS ” SLAPPING/PUNCHING the Ball back to the Hun Goalie, when he was TOO FEART to stick his head into the Servette Cross.

At least, THREE or FOUR Servette players appealed for the Penalty straight away, For once VAR made the CORRECT Call.

It made me wonder, WHY did some Hun players argue with the decision, THEY would have been SCREAMING for a Penalty if it was a Sevette Player SLAPPING/PUNCHING the Ball ?

The BBC HUN PUNDITS also appeared SHOCKED by the penalty award to the Swiss, and when looking back on it in Replays, they TRIED to somehow AVOID any criticism of DESSERS….” He saw it late Blah Blah…The ball came off Soutar Blah Blah…………when it was perfectly obvious that DESSERS turned his head AWAY from the Cross in fear of actually sticking his head on it….HE BOTTL;ED it….Simples !

Overall, I saw NOTHING from ANY of Beales new signings to worry Celtic.

I am trying to use my UN BIASED Heid this morning….The SEVCO that I watched on Saturday and again last night are WORSE than recent seasons.

NONE of Sevcos new signings scare me whatsoever….so far.

“Servette escaped with an ibrox defeat that feels like a win!” – Daily Record

They literally described a Rangers defeat to Celtic.

  13. Big Jimmy

Didn’t watch the game last night, in fact I rarely watch them unless it’s against us.

I’m happy they seem to be struggling.

    Take care

  14. The Huns other new signing, DOWALL in his role as a Sub….did NOT look any better than the other DUDS that Beale has signed this season.

In all honesty, Guys like LUNDSTRAM and HAGI MUST be sickened by being on the bench to make way for Beales new signings judging on what I have seen so far ?

I also took the Correct Score of 2 – 2 last night with the Bookies, and IF Servette hadnt been a man down, they MAY have went for an equaliser late on with greater gusto ?

Servette also had some 1st team regulars missing last night thru suspensions and injuries and a VISA Denial apparently, so hopefully SERVETTE can really ” SERVE it Up” to the Huns next week in CUCKOO Land ?

    LOL

What strategy would you introduce? That would be so different.

I don’t see the fan base getting bored of domestic football,

What are you bored with? That’s the only thing that jumps out my friend.

Remember no domestic success- no Europe top table.

  17. Good Morning.

Livi must be pretty excited by last night too.

A disjointed ponderous effort of a side.

They will be distracted pre Tuesdays return and now have a quick turnaround pre Saturdays game.

Livi have now played 5 games this season. Rangers has played 2 in a week already.

We could be going to Aberdeen maybe looking to stretch a gap to 5 or 6 points v that lot on Sunday.

  18. Watched until the 2nd went in …thought they looked decent till then and started quick…I was thinking they will be more battle hardened by the time they play us and if we start slowly there we’ll be 2 or 3 down.

I really would like some real quality added soon

  19. BBC Scotland will broadcast live coverage of three further European fixtures involving Scottish clubs.

After showing Wednesday’s Champions League third qualifying round first leg between Rangers and Servette, the return in Switzerland on 15 August (19:30 BST) will also be on the BBC Scotland channel, BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website and app.

Thursday’s Conference League qualifier between Hibernian and Luzern (19:30) will be broadcast, as will Hearts v Rosenborg on 17 August (19:45).

  20. Let’s not be bagging any gimmes from the Aberdeen match. We go there weaker than we did last Saturday with 2 first team players down in Oh and Starfelt, Hatate huffing and Hart’s confidence in bit. Robson will have them up for it.

With that clown Goodwin in charge last season we only won with a late Callum goal, in a team with our old talisman Jota on the wing. We had the luck of 3 home games against them.

It’s a tricky one. We lose, themuns hammer Livingston, they go above us.

    Buy some feckin quality Celtic.

They remind me of us in the early stages of the covid season. They managed a win but it’s becoming very clear there’s major issues.

    ——–

Not sure I know enough about them to agree AD – but a very thought provoking post nonetheless – respect.

    One of those issues?

The letter “T” is missing from Dessers surname.

The guy has clearly taken Morelos’ seat at the team dinner table … the one closest to the Desserts tray.

  22. Laura from the ticket office got back to me yesterday saying that there are no tickets on sale yet for the St Johnstone game on 26th. I had asked about the family enclosure area which I thought was in the area behind the goals at the “away” end. She said there is no family enclosure area, you just go where you can and include the kid’s age when buying tickets. Changed times, no? I always thought there was an area set aside for this.

  23. Beale has just said on SSN that Genk will have to go for the game next week, this guy is all over the place, maybe he thinks they play Dunddee at the weekend and will plan accordingly.

  24. See the obsession with Sevco on hear is pathetic,Personnally I never watch them so I never comment about them ,my only concern is Celtic nothing more,im more worried about our defence which I suspect they will be found out in the Champions league,so forget about Sevco ,we should be putting pressure on the Celtic Board to sign a few quality players ,ie Goalkeeper, left back, and another Centre Back.

  25. bournesouprecipe on

New Sevco striker apparently ‘couldn’t lace Morelos’s boots ‘ funnily neither can Morelos.
