£4m up for grabs for Celtic in qualifiers

253

Champions League qualifiers do not concern us directly this season, but their outcome will determine whether we ‘earn’ several million pounds.  Two potential qualifiers: Copenhagen and Dinamo Zagreb have higher 10-year coefficients than Celtic.  That metric rewards qualification on a sliding scale.  Celtic will earn an extra £2m if both fail to qualify, half of that if only one reaches the group stage.

Copenhagen were held to a 0-0 draw at home in the first leg against Sparta Prague last night.  Dinamo’s game at AEK Athens was postponed after a fatality, the tie will conclude on 19 August.  We can be moderately hopeful of collecting that £2m.

Scotland earns 10% of the UK TV pot, a rough approximation of our population split.  Newco will earn 40% of that 10% if they reach the group stage; if not, Celtic will retain all of it.  That’s slightly over £2m up for grabs, pushing the total in-play variable north of £4m.

Newco’s first challenge is to overcome Servette, who defended their way to a penalty kicks triumph against Genk in the last round.  They travel to Glasgow without a handful of injured and suspended players, and one who failed to get a visa from UK immigration authorities (Wimbledon is OK for Russians, football competitions don’t matter, even if you are a Cameroon-born, Cameroon international which Russian dual citizenship).

PSV Eindhoven are the likely opponents of whoever progresses to the play-off round, which brings an added €5m bonus for reaching that stage.  This is money Newco desperately need; expect full theatrics at Ibrox tonight.

While we can muse on the money, Brendan and the players will only have thoughts for Aberdeen on Sunday.  Automatic qualification is a huge bonus.

  1. DeniaBhoy: First of all, sorry to hear about your mother. I hope she makes a speedy and full recovery.

If you are not sorted a week before the game please post request again or ask Paul67 for my email addy. I can’t promise anything but I’ll do my best for you.

I’m currently in the Costa del Sol and the last week has been lovely but temperatures due to go up to 35° tomorrow. This is the hottest Summer here as long as I can remember.

I’ll be at that game so will be able to meet you at the fans’ café beside the Superstore if we get things sorted.

  2. Been a long time since I cared about anything involving Rangers. Obvious exception is when we play them, but that’s it. Thinking more generally about the state of Scottish football, I’d like to see all our clubs get results in Europe, to help get us some more recognition/respect. It’s better for Celtic in the long run.

I NEVER wanted Rangers to win and I NEVER want Newco to win either.

IF Scottish football had accepted thay they are a new club, I MIGHT have been OK with any European successes they may have had. The fact that Scottish football did not do the right thing is one of the reasons I never want Newco to do well.

  4. HS – I know a lot of people will agree with you :)

Old club / new club – I really couldn’t care less. I only care about our team.

Always wanted Rangers to lose every time they ;played.

No different with Sevco, c’mon anyone who plays them!

  6. ALMORE – THANKS.

With Oh out for 5-6 weeks and Kyogo a shoulder charge away from surgery we are short of quality up front for the looming Aberdeen, rangers and CL openers.

I know BR believes Maeda is good through the middle but with Oh out who is there on the bench?

For the next month at least we are looking particularly vulnerable with lack of cover in goal, RB, LB and up front.

  7. With the Champions League looming it’s a real pity that we have to disrupt the solid central defensive duo of CCV and Carl Starfelt. Tough tackling Starfelt was playing the best football of his career in our world record breaking treble achievement last season and alas he’s for the off and we hope the untried Pole will be quick to form as solid a partnership with CCV as the departing Swede.

Unfortunately Oh has now been added to the injury list with Johnson our star right back. I reckon we can manage without the Korean who’s not exactly prolific and Celtic have players to fill that role with such a huge squad. Hope things work out for Carl and looking forward to Aberdeen at the weekend.

  8. Hankray – the problem is we have been told Kyogo needs surgery on his shoulder. We are one awkward fall or Lundstrum assault from having no CF.

  9. I wonder how BR would finish this sentence –

“Since my last time at Celtic, I have learned to……… “.

    ………

You have a decent shout there as the Swiss team have drew 4 of their last 5 games, I was tempted but thought prob Sevco win by the odd goal. I went for both teams to get a player sent off, Swiss team will pick up cards as they do. Also Sevco are not protected in Europe. Bet small, decent odds.

Can’t understand why some posters on here still talk of old club/new club as if there’s any debate.

Even BBC Scotland got it right 10 years ago when responding to a complaint from Sevco supporters about references to the club being new.

It said: “A football club, once incorporated, is indistinguishable in Scots law from its corporate identity.

“If the club was separate it would need its own constitution, committee members, trustees, etc.

“Rangers Football Club does not have that because it is incorporated.”

Don’t suppose the consistent use of the term “newco” by our host helps either.

  12. Abada, Maeda, Oh and Kyogo are all forwards. Two of them play wide but they are forwards capable of playing down the middle. They have all done so in the past for Celtic. How many do we need?

Of course, some are more talented than others, with Kyogo top of the bunch.

Anyway, still waiting for white smoke on the many incomings and outgoings needed for the squad, which means Joe Hart’s dodgy footwork is a go for Sunday’s trip to Pittodrie.

Professional-like transfer windows are crap entertainment

Agree it doesn’t, I’m not so mixed up Sevco FC, even some of their support will agree that is who they are now.

With summer hols and various other distractions didn’t realise that Kyogo had a dodgy shoulder however we do have a big squad. Lunstrum would be chasing shadows if he thought he would clobber Kyogo.

  18. The BBC remain banned from our press conferences, wonder if they will apologise to BR? Don’t hold your breath. . .

  19. Anyone heard anything re. the “Hatate to Brighton” rumours? With Maeda and Kyogo on new contracts, the talk is Reo turned down a similar deal as he expects to go to EPL this window.

In the meantime, the DT and MoR bromance is blossoming 😜

  20. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

Tom McL earlier re AEK. Cheers.

So your team name was pronounced

    I-ECK-OH-KAY ?

    Snazzy name for a team.

Why would any reasonable soul object to it?

PS – best of luck with the bet
