90 minutes of European drama ahead

443

The juices are flowing ahead of tonight’s crucial third round Champions League qualifier against HJK Helsinki at Celtic Park.  Not only is it the first competitive game Celtic have had something to play for since winning the league at Rugby Park almost four months ago, it will be one of our most important games of the season.

The Finnish champions are midseason and have already negotiated an earlier qualifying round.  After recent August disappointments against Sion, Braga (how little we knew about them at the time) and Utrecht, Neil Lennon will know only too well the pitfalls of summer football.

It will be a long and tiring 90 minutes for the players but a special Celtic Park atmosphere should see them through.

Best wishes to Morten Rasmussen, who joined FC Midtylland yesterday, or to tell the fuller story, was removed from the Celtic payroll with around £250k in compensation heading our way.  Morten arrived in January 2010, shortly before Robbie Keane and a host of other loan signing pitched up at Celtic and squeezed his chances of first team football.

Tony Mowbray was replaced by Neil Lennon two months later and Morten was clearly not in the new manager’s plans.  It all looked promising for him when he came on as a substitute, scored a goal and turned the game against Hamilton Accies in his first week at the club, but it was pretty much downhill from there.

Lesson here: for several years we signed too many players.
Enjoy the game!

Remember our raffle.  All proceeds go to the good causes; The Haven, Cancer Respite Centre, Blantyre, Oscar Knox Neuroblastoma Appeal, Martin Chambers Ecuador Trust and Aberdour Primary School Parents Association.

  2. The huns have been so desperate in their futile attempts at clutching at straws over this whole “we are still the same Rangers” debacle that they have whittled their straws down to a pithy kernel…an infinitesimal knot…a microscopic medulla…the singularity point of a nubby stump…at some period they will have to accept it, surely.

btw, went out earlier wearing my black zip-up Celtic F.C. jaicket with CQN badge strategically placed on collar with sartorial flourish, wearing my new green suede trainers with green laces, yellow t-shirt and Levis.

Being mostly a conservative natty dresser I felt a bit like a walking neon sign but curiously refreshed and confident in my outgoing apparel. I do believe no one could be in any doubt as to which team I support !

Its a post on the new Scottish football corruption blog, formed in homage to RTC ( http://scottishfootballcorruption.wordpress.com/)

In simple terms for the hun:

Fiorentina – newco’d. Newco bought back oldco. History intact.

    Leeds – did not liquidate.

    Napoli – successfully exited administration.

Darlington – liquidated. Newco formed, considered a ‘continuation of the tradition of Darlington’ in the eyes of the FA but a completely separate entity, a new club.

Rangers – To be liquidated. Incorporated 1899 > if company dies, club dies. This is what incorporation means. Can’t just keep the bits they want(ie. trophies). See Darlington. Newco dies > newclub dies etc. Charles Green may yet sanction a new Tesco or BDO may laugh at the whole charade and call it off.

Celtic – did not liquidate. Same company number since incorporation. 125 years and going strong.

    Hail hail

  12. Looking forward to the big game tonight, despite all the apprehension leading up to this tie I’m hoping the Celtic Support scare the proverbial out of this Finnish team and we see a 5 star performance by the Bhoys in Green on and off the park. I don’t like losing an away goal but if its 5-1 I won’t mind. ;)

  13. Estorilbhoy you can sub for two months, I’ve just done it. You need to cancel in writing before start of month 2. Check the t&c’s for instructions

  14. Miki67, what happened to the auld B’mouth Shammy, used to have a good crowd for televised games, badges and held Celtic do’s (I done 2 gigs for them).

I guess the Bhoys who ran it must have moved?

I’m more than a bit surprised at some of the recent Sevco signings who do not come cheap in k per week terms.

Looking at my wage calculator (and removing a payback to Ticketus because although I suspect they are still involved it is only a suspicion), if the average weekly wage is £3,000 per week then Sevco need to sell 37,000 SBooks.to avoid going into debt.

If SB sales are around 22,000 then they will accumulate £4.5M debt by the seasons end. They only break even by year 3 if they are in the top tier. So the SFA must have bought into CG’s business case, although being in a position to help a leg up to the top tier reduces that risk.

Now whilst UEFA FFP standards do not apply to the SFL surely the principle of the ratio of football income to spend is not being abandoned by the SFA? I know UEFA could not give a monkey’s, but a member association abandoning a key part of UEFA policy by which national associations are bound, suggests UEFA FFP is a busted flush before it gets off the ground.

CG was boasting about being debt free at the end of the season but that will depend on where the funds to finance wages are coming from and if it is not from footballing sources does it come within UEFA’s FFP parameters in ratio terms? I might have to do some checking.

    Hail Hail.

Great to be back and raring to go.

Hope the injuries suffered in the Inter game were light and precautions taken with the players. I am a bit nervous about this time of the year and I trust Neil has done all the homework he could including stirring up the team. We need to come out the starting blocks like Bobby Lennox !

Glad to see the mention of the Thai Tims and action taken against the press through the press complaints commission, does anyone know the details to the earlier mention of the Daily Rangers ? I went to see them in the concert hall and it was a great night, well and ably supported by a superb cast. More shame on the MSM.

    Off to Paradise.
