A confident striker and a scared defender

965

John Guidetti has put himself out there by letting us know he’ll score a hat-trick in next month’s League Cup semi-final.  I’m not normally an advocate of showing confidence, if not contempt, for opponents prior to a game, but Guidetti’s comments come against a rich canvas.

The player is in a rut and will be feeling the weight of disappointment with each passing chance.  He is a goal-scorer, he’ll score again, but he needs to find the spark to fire-up the second part of his season.

You will remember Kenny Miller ran his guts out in his early months as a Celtic player but it was not until a game against oldco Rangers in September that his landmark first Celtic goal arrived.  Kris Commons has been a scoring sensation throughout his time at the club apart from his second season, when he took until April before scoring, a delightful chip over the oldco keeper.

Ahead of both of those games I knew it was all going to come together for Miller and Commons.  John Guidetti has set himself a target.  He will probably score before that game but he knows how important it is to perform at Hampden.  He is good enough to deliver on this one, don’t bet against him.

Contrast John’s comments to those last week from newco defender, Steven Smith, who said, “The fans will probably be dreading [the Celtic game]because in the big games this season, we haven’t done well. Everybody has got their opinions and are entitled to them.

“But with the results we have been having and the way we have been playing, I don’t think we can think about it too much.”

You will be hard pushed to find a clearer example of the language of failure: “dreading”, “haven’t done well” and “the way we’ve been playing”.  You normally need to work a bit to find a player’s insecurities.  It’s good of John Guidetti to mark his card on what to expect. Give me a confident striker over a scared defender any day.

The Second Annual Celtic Supporter’s Féile is on the weekend of Friday 30 January 30 – Sunday 1 February in Philadelphia.  The events include live music each day, the US premier of The Asterisk Years, with a Q&A with Paul Larkin and Graham Wilson of Beyond the Waves podcast, as well as live coverage of our first ever meeting with newco Rangers in the League Cup semi-final.

You can find more information, including how to book, here.

  2. Reading back, regarding the statement/advert, etc, today seems about varying perceptions of us and THEM.

The Huns have an impression of their resurrected entity being some attractive young debutante from a family rich in history, awaiting the affections of many wealthy suitors.

We on the other hand know it’s nothing more than a rancid old crack-whore, lurching form dodgy bar to dodgy bar, slavering over wideboy jakies for a few bob to keep going until the next fix.

Unlikely. No for dogmatic reasons but cos I love taking the wee Mhan to the game and I don’t want him exposed to their hatred.

  9. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Bada Bing, further to your earlier post about Dallas the younger now being a Eufa listed ref.

He has done well to go from the fourth official at the 2012 Junior cup final between Shotts and Auchinleck to the Eufa list in two and a half years. That is some going.

I have a horrible feeling and I don’t know why, Shuggie’s influence with our refs will haunt us for years to come.

I’m with the Exiled Tim, get the refs sorted out first then go after the SFA especially Ogilvie.

  10. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Bada, the H2 channel on Sky had a documentary on last Friday called The Godfather legacy.

It showed the clip of James Caan saying to Al Pacino, you get up close bada bing.

The documentary was good with interviews with James Caan, Al Pacino, Francis Ford Coppola and Talia Shire,. plus some guys with Phd’s going on about the effect the Godfather had on American culture.

    Folks,

I have received word from TET that his wife is in hospital, after suffering a heart attack at the week end.

Thankfully, she is improving, but they would really appreciate our thoughts and prayers.

Being the kind of lad he is, he was reluctant to post this news himself ; afraid of being accused of attention seeking!

  12. Dallas-it’s actually the FIFA List mate,my mistake,a meteoric rise for a guy who is lucky to have took charge of a handful of SPFL games.I agree re his influence on refs we get for Euro games

    Not happy with Ronaldo.GIRUH….

It was Stephanie for me (she’ got great teeth, by the way, and all her ain), but sadly not for many others, who are as fed up with all the hullabaloo about her goal, as much as I am fed up with CQN’s and its resident clique’s ongoing obsession. I refer to 95% of the posts today since 15.14 today which have been about a team that no longer exists. Worryingly, this team is not Third Lanark.

As for Stephanie’s goal…….see evidence in this link of “Stephanie Fatique”…..

  19. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

    Bada,for Fifa’s sake that’s even worse.

I would love to know the extent of Dallas does Bonkle’s influence at the SFA, UEFA & FIFA. It will be more to his benefit than football’s I bet.

It may just be coincidence but apart from the penalty we got v Spartak at Celtic Park, the performances of refs in our Uefa competition games at Celtic Park, have been poor, since Shuggie ingratiated himself with Uefa.

He used to always go on about his pal, Collina.

Dallas the older should have been punted for lying to the media the night after the Dougie Dougie game. Instead of saying Dougie Dougie made a chorus and verse of it and not letting him ref for a few weeks, Shuggie said Dougie Dougie had done hee-haw wrong.
