A decade on from Basel

1055

Ten years ago this morning we were celebrating what appeared to be the importance of a Momo Sylla goal two minutes from time to give Celtic a 3-1 first leg lead against FC Basel in the Champions League play-off round.

The previous season Celtic defeated a formidable sounding Ajax team at the same stage so when they were drawn against the Swiss team confidence was high.  Two weeks later our record of poor results away from home in Europe’s top competition was further cemented as Basel gained an away goal advantage.

That failure worked out well for Martin O’Neill’s team who dropped to the Uefa Cup and progressed all the way to the Seville final but Neil Lennon will be aware that Helsingborgs carry no less a reputational threat to Celtic than Basel did a decade ago.  Basel were not a better team than Celtic but a slow start to both games, and a missed penalty, cost us entry to the Champions League.  We will need to be better prepared next week.

Paul Larkin’s latest book, Albert, Dougie and Win, is available to purchase from Lulu.  The three-in-one book covers the days and events surrounding Celtic’s 1986 league win in From Albert, with Love, the SFA’s 2010 challenges in Dougie, Dougie, and the men who stopped 10 in Wim’s Tims.  Fascinating stories written by one of the very best Celtic authors.

  1. We will be very lucky to get Rhodes, can´t see it happening but I hope I am wrong.

Seen him play a few times and I have been quite impressed. Probably doesn´t have the pace for the EPL which gives us a glimour of hope of signing him. Runs the channels well, can finish with either foot and his HEAD!

He is certainly not a big target man and in my opinion a similar striker to Hoops and Stokes, who although at times link up very well, are a bit too similar as well. Rhodes can at least head a ball which Hoops and Stokes seem to be very poor at.

Russell again is a player I really like the look of but AGAIN similar kind of player to Hoops, Stokes and Rhodes….

I would have thought they look at how much better than the others we are. I accept that we are better because of our financial power but better we are and not the bunch of numpties as described regularly on these pages.

I agree .. we were diddled out of a treble. This team domestically is good enough.

In Europe not a prayer not without two proven quality players recruited …. centre back and centre forward

  4. Boring Music Post Alert (JohnnyClash will like it)

A decade on from Basel – 3 decades since The Clash were one of the mightiest bands on the planet!

Sitting listening to ‘Super Black Market Clash’ and it sounds as fresh as it did 30+ years ago. What a band The Clash were in their heyday, the Strummer/Jones writing partnership really was special and neither really scaled the heights on their own.

One of my all time favourite Clash songs on the album ‘Jail Guitar Doors’ which gets a mention in the The Clash movie ‘Rude Boy’. After a gig at Glasgow Apollo Joe and Paul get arrested and carted off by the polis to the cells where they hear a Clash fan singing it in a cell next to them!

They didn’t always get it right but when they did it was awesome, one of the first to attempt the punk/reggae crossover (Police and Thieves, Armaggedon Time, Justice Tonight etc), early pioneers of the dance/hip hop movement, the Times Square Bonds gigs The Clash tried it all.

Ultimately as with all great bands the cracks started to show and the main players drifted apart. For me their was only 1 version of The Clash (Strummer/Jones/Simonon/Headon) that mattered those 4 on their game couldn’t be mastered.

Thanks for the memories guys you helped make my teenage years special, RIP Joe I hope your still writing up there.

As far as I know you live in Australia.

Now can’t resist to ask you few questions.

Don’t you have conscience remorse for living in the land that was the place of the huge genocide? Not the religious one.

Or you moved there to help the poor Aborigines? Maybe you working for one of those human organizations?

If you feel frustrated you can take a boat with paddles and move to the better land that Cuba is. I see from your posts Cuba must be the paradise. You could be first man paddling different direction (on Cuba).

    Zbyszek –

    Where do I start?

Your post is breathtaking in its arrogance and ignorance.

Another poster claimed that Communism had destroyed more lives than any other movement or creed. All I did was disagree with that claim. Does that make me a Communist? If I say I disagree with oppression of homosexuals, does that mean I must be gay?

You claim that “from my posts” I must be an admirer of Cuba. Where are you getting such nonsense? In my 4 years posting on CQN, I am pretty sure I have never mentioned the word Cuba at any time. I am not a Communist. I am not a supporter of Communism. I have not even expressed support for Communism on CQN, so please point me in the direction of all these posts of mine where I expound the virtues of Cuba and Communism.

In fact, I have taken no part in the political debates of late. So where you are getting this nonsense from is beyond me.

Not only was I not defending Communism with my comment, I was not attacking religion. I was merely stating a fact. That you do not like that fact is not my problem.

As for your childish and ignorant comments about living in Australia, they are so insulting and preposterous as to be deserving of no further comment, other than to leave it there for all to see.

If this is the level of your thinking, I suggest you stick to lurking.

We will struggle in Europe for the same reason as the other SPL teams will find it nigh on impossible to win the SPL. Even if we bought a CH far superior to Charlie Mulgrew and a striker of the highest order,we would still struggle like hell against Barca, Real, Man City,Chelsea, etc

regarding Jordan Rhodes I think he would be a real asset both on the park and financially in terms of re-sale value in a few years. He’s similar to steven fletcher though with a far better scoring record. How much could we have got fletcher from hibs for? How much are Sunderland going to have to pay today?

Your accusation of genocide is completely unfounded.

Please point me to a reliable aboriginal,or any other source which backs up your accusation.

As a Pole , you would be very familiar with the genocide of the Jewish Poles who lived in your country, with the compliance, some would say assistance of non Jewish Poles.

Anti-Jewish pogroms took place in Poland long before the arrival of Hitler`s huns.

You are aware of that,I take it.

I loved the comment from the Australian commentator during the Scotland game.

As Ian Black was brought on near the end, he said, “There has been a lot of controversy in Scotland about Black’s inclusion in the squad, and no wonder. In his 150 games for Hearts, he did not get anywhere near a Scotland cap. Now that he finds himself playing in the 4th tier of the Scottish leagues, all of a sudden he is deemed international class. Very strange, or perhaps not.”

  22. Fortunes Favour Mibbes @23.49 on 15th August,

This “Thatcher thing” isn’t about her – it’s about hatred, shown in this instance by MIKI67. When first pulled up about it, he tried to deny it, then to justify it. He’s now given up. Butting out of an argument that you’re losing is fair enough: running away while making unsubstantiated accusations of “sleekitness” is shameful.

Robert Tressell stated that Miki had been “abused” – also unsubstantiated: would he state clearly what the “abuse” amounted to?

At no point is this exchange have I claimed that Maggie Thatcher was a good PM – as I stated last night, that was not my point at all. However she was accused of “shutting down the Scottish steel industry”: this is a figment of someone’s imagination (Ravenscraig shut down after she left office) & makes me wonder how many of her other misdeeds come from the same source – motivated by hatred & not reality.

BTW philvis, ignore the twisted fascist.

New players just register normally, will take no longer than ten minutes.

This year I’ve gone for the classic league, literally most points wins over the course of the season compared to last years head to head system, where you played different people every week and three points for win, one for draw etc.
