A decade on from Basel

1055

Ten years ago this morning we were celebrating what appeared to be the importance of a Momo Sylla goal two minutes from time to give Celtic a 3-1 first leg lead against FC Basel in the Champions League play-off round.

The previous season Celtic defeated a formidable sounding Ajax team at the same stage so when they were drawn against the Swiss team confidence was high.  Two weeks later our record of poor results away from home in Europe’s top competition was further cemented as Basel gained an away goal advantage.

That failure worked out well for Martin O’Neill’s team who dropped to the Uefa Cup and progressed all the way to the Seville final but Neil Lennon will be aware that Helsingborgs carry no less a reputational threat to Celtic than Basel did a decade ago.  Basel were not a better team than Celtic but a slow start to both games, and a missed penalty, cost us entry to the Champions League.  We will need to be better prepared next week.

Paul Larkin’s latest book, Albert, Dougie and Win, is available to purchase from Lulu.  The three-in-one book covers the days and events surrounding Celtic’s 1986 league win in From Albert, with Love, the SFA’s 2010 challenges in Dougie, Dougie, and the men who stopped 10 in Wim’s Tims.  Fascinating stories written by one of the very best Celtic authors.

  1. So the SFA must believe that the Sevconians will only turn up to support the national team if a Sevconian player is in the side.

Says everything about both SFA and Sevconians doesn’t it?

Fairy snuff but, for me, a system which produces and perpetuates grinding poverty, suffering and starvation can only ever be the greatest evil.

West Wales Celt – I don’t know mate,i have never lived under Communism – capitalism hasn’t been a walk in the park, that’s true to say.

It would take you to ask somebody that has lived in a Communist system.

The people of Spain maybe, the older ones? Franco or the Reds? That would be a good question.

But there is no denying this – Communism has been a blight on humanity,a terrible evil, particularly for the peasants,Christians and working class folk.

I think you’ll find that more people have suffered and died in the name of religion than any other cause or doctrine in the history of humankind, during which Communism is a fairly recent phonomenon.

So £24 million for a 29 year old with a history of injuries but a phenomenal record last season. Good buy or huge risk?

Tom McLaughlin – Without a shadow of a doubt, and in no way am i disputing that fact.

    There is no utopia.

Have you ever read The Friendship Book?

You live in Oz – when it comes to racism and exploitation,i am sure that you could educate us all on that score.

He is on the treatment table if he gets a broken shoelace.

Unless he is looking for a new contract or a tranfer.

And at £220k pw,I think he has done well.

I’ll be blinkin’ astounded if he evr performs well on a regular basis now.

    Got his money……..

I think you owe me an explanation for that comment. Are you suggesting that because I live in Australia, I am a therefore a racist?

  9. Good morning CQNers,

West Wales Celt….You’ve gotta believe Van Persie will be a revelation at Man U – their movement will suit his game much better that the staccato tactics deployed at Arsenal where they lose their way in the last 3rd of the park (much in the same way as we do).

One thumbs up, one thumbs down.

    What did I expect?

You lot argue about everything. :-)

Personally, despite the storm, I think Wenger has played his cards well.

RVP’s value would have plummeted if he didn’t have a great season.

Tom McLaughlin – behave you yerself.

    You are another agitator.

I am not going to call you a coward, because you must be game to live over in that backwater, what with all those jellyfish and spiders and what not.

Still,me personally – i believe that land is cursed, built on the back of exploitation and misery – no luck there, that’s why it never won anything at the olympics.

Man U need some creativity in the midfield as Scholes’ aching legs can’t quite cut it.

All that i wanted was the 888 comment. It took a wee while, but i got it in the end.

Communism is always a good subject to get the comments flowing.

Throwing a sprick to catch a whale so to speak.

    Anyway,peace to the Celtic nation.

    Slan. ;)

  14. Think United getting van Persie will be great for them, lot of money I know for a man his age, but to be fair they need to inject in the form of this excellent player.

PS When are the Tic going to do a little spending on a forward and center back?

West Wales Celt – I meant every word that i said though.

  16. Morning,

Green will blame the game being moved on bigotry.

Rangers’ visit of Falkirk in the

League Cup has been put back 24 hours due to a clash with Celtic’s Champions League encounter.

The tie has been switched to Thursday, 30 August with Celtic in action on the Wednesday in Glasgow when Neil Lennon’s side host Helsingborgs IF in

    their play-off second leg match.

  17. I’m not sure Rhodes is what we need. I think we require a striker with real pace and work ethic , who can help with our pressing game. We give teams a lot of time on the ball at the back, and Stokes in particular is wanting when it comes to closing down defenders.

I suspect Bangura was bought for this type of role, however that hasn’t worked out so far.

  18. I haven’t seen Rhodes play but from the sound of the descriptions of his game last night he sounds similar to Hooper and I am not convinced that’s what we need.

I would love us to have some who’s pace terrifies the opposition, that coupled with a football brain as I think Hooper has got one to go with his predatory qualities, Rhodes only makes sense if Hooper is going and if that’s the case then we’re back to square one with a slow poacher up front and no one to link with him.

I wonder if the clamour for Rhodes to sign would be as great if he wasn’t a Celtic supporter and I’m surprised that Celtic aren’t being slaughtered for even daring to bring a third tier striker to the club…

Genuine pace is what our front line lacks…

To all those who played last year, its a simple 5 minute job to re-register and set up your team, most of you will have probably forgotten your passwords so just type in your email and a recovery password will be sent to you.

New players just register normally, will take no longer than ten minutes.

This year I’ve gone for the classic league, literally most points wins over the course of the season compared to last years head to head system, where you played different people every week and three points for win, one for draw etc.

To join the league the code is :- 721106-181775
