A decade on from Basel

1055

Ten years ago this morning we were celebrating what appeared to be the importance of a Momo Sylla goal two minutes from time to give Celtic a 3-1 first leg lead against FC Basel in the Champions League play-off round.

The previous season Celtic defeated a formidable sounding Ajax team at the same stage so when they were drawn against the Swiss team confidence was high.  Two weeks later our record of poor results away from home in Europe’s top competition was further cemented as Basel gained an away goal advantage.

That failure worked out well for Martin O’Neill’s team who dropped to the Uefa Cup and progressed all the way to the Seville final but Neil Lennon will be aware that Helsingborgs carry no less a reputational threat to Celtic than Basel did a decade ago.  Basel were not a better team than Celtic but a slow start to both games, and a missed penalty, cost us entry to the Champions League.  We will need to be better prepared next week.

Paul Larkin’s latest book, Albert, Dougie and Win, is available to purchase from Lulu.  The three-in-one book covers the days and events surrounding Celtic’s 1986 league win in From Albert, with Love, the SFA’s 2010 challenges in Dougie, Dougie, and the men who stopped 10 in Wim’s Tims.  Fascinating stories written by one of the very best Celtic authors.

    I think you’ll find that more people have suffered and died in the name of religion than any other cause or doctrine in the history of humankind, during which Communism is a fairly recent phenomenon.

    I do not post since few weeks, but lurking from time to time.

    As far as I know you live in Australia.

    Now can’t resist to ask you few questions.

    Don’t you have conscience remorse for living in the land that was the place of the huge genocide? Not the religious one.

    Or you moved there to help the poor Aborigines? Maybe you working for one of those human organizations?

    If you feel frustrated you can take a boat with paddles and move to the better land that Cuba is. I see from your posts Cuba must be the paradise. You could be first man paddling different direction (on Cuba).

    As for the quote from your post.

    According to the reports from the independent human rights organizations in America (not Roman Catholic, not Christian) in 2010 year 180 000 Christians were killed on this earth because of their faith. The only reason for their death was their faith. Year 2010 was not special. That number of killed could be average for many other years. Sometimes this number is much higher. This is not the estimation. It’s proved number, minimum.

    Mind you, many believers wish to live in peace, believing in what is dear for them. Looks like this is appeal to you.

    What else do you want to say more? That Hitler and Stalin were Christians?

    Read more, go for the facts. For the man with a good will it takes few minutes to find what were their statements on the religions.

    Unfortunately, as Thomas Hardy has put it “there is a condition worse than blindness, and that is, seeing something that isn’t there.”

    Anyone think Stokes or Hooper would have buried that header last night?

    Me neither.

    Theres the difference. Link up play from the bits of the game I seen was also good. Only brought up a stream of the game to check him out and was impressed. We’re going to get injuries and theres always room for another goalscorer at Celtic- I hope the rumours about him signing when we qualify for CL OR sell Ki are true.

    Its a competitive transfer market and any striker with blistering pace these days who also scores goals is going to cost 10m+. Rhodes is no slouch and would be a great signing, fitting our transfer policy down to the ground and a good Tim to boot, he’d know what to expect up here. Seems to have the right attitude as well.

    Good point, still wouldn’t fancy either striker if the oppurtunity did present itself though!

    Interesting you should say that though- Izaguirre is a good player and during his first season was excellent, but his crossing for the most part is woeful. More often than not ends up out of play, in the keepers arms or badly overhit.

    Apart from that he’s great;)

  13. According to a variety of CQNers:

    Forster is not commanding at all;

    Matthews can`t defend;

    Rogne is prone to injuries and mistakes;

    Mulgrew is not a CH and cannot cross when he is played on the left;

    Izaguirre is now an overall poor player;

    Brown hasn`t got a clue;

    Wanyama is brilliant;

    Kayal. whilst injured, is also superb;

    Commoms is fat and slow;

    McCourt is unfit;

    Ledley is slow;

    Ki is unsuited to the Scottish game;

    Samaras is brilliant and useless;

    Stokes is lazy and not very good anyway;

    Hooper is slow and has no close control.

    I can`t understand how the bookies can make us 33/1 on to win the SPL. Very strange.

    “A letter from the SPL to the Former club known as Rangers 1873 – dated 18 May 2012 – stated ‘The Board decided to accede to the application of Dundee Utd and accordingly, the sum will be withheld from the next sum payable by the SPL Limited to Rangers Sevco and the sum will be paid by the SPL Limited to Dundee Utd’.

    “Why the SPL have not paid Dundee Utd the outstanding sum as previously agreed is a question that they Or BDO need to answer. We wrote to Dundee Utd on Monday explaining the SPL had previously confirmed they would pay it…. but we are being obtuse by pretending to be the same legal entity as before which is now being held in liquidation

    “I spoke to (SFA chief executive) Stewart Regan and his solicitor this morning and provided them with copies of all relevant documentation. Whether this documentation is relevevant to Sevco seems highly unlikely

    The bookies probably looked at what we spend on wages compared to the other SPL clubs … and to be fair to the bookies if they are basing it on that then the odds are pretty short.

    RAPID VIENNA say they are still owed well over £1m for the transfer of striker Nikica Jelavic to the oldco Rangers.

    The Austrian side say they have not been paid or informed if they will receive the remaining £1,011,733 plus steep accruing interest from the £4m sale of the striker two years ago.

    Rapid have informed FIFA about the issue after becoming aware that Green’s new administration were settling some of the debts of the oldco Rangers noting that the position of foreign debtors had yet to be clarified.

    The club spoke out yesterday in light of club chief executive Charles Green’s assertions that all money owed by the liquidated Rangers had now been paid to Scottish clubs.

    Dundee United have disputed this claim although Rangers say the £31,000 owed to the Tannadice club should have been paid by the SPL out of last season’s prize money.

    Dundee Utd see the claim as being around £62,000

    Rangers have 15 days to pay Rapid or they could face punishment from FIFA which is highly unlikely due to them being Rangers. FIFA is expected to issue a stern rebuke and offer a settlement period of ten years with all proposed fines suspended for this time period

    Peter Klinglmiller, director of communications for Rapid, told The Herald: “The new owners at Rangers have said that it is important that every football debt is paid and we want that to be done for us now, especially as Jelavic is now with Everton.

    “We have to be treated fairly over this. The last installment of Jelavic’s transfer fee has to be paid by the end of August. There is still time for the money to be paid.”

    Croatian international Jelavic was sold by former owner Craig Whyte to Everton in January for £5.5M with the Ibrox club going into administration the following month.

    It is understood Green is attempting to retrieve the money from the Jelavic deal from Craig Whyte and Sir David Murray

    STV has obtained the wording of a letter believed to have been sent by the Scottish Premier League to Rangers on May 18, 2012.

    In the correspondence, the SPL agrees to meet a debt owed by Rangers to Dundee United, totaling just over £31,000, taken from competition money due to the Ibrox club for finishing second in the league in the 2011/12 season.

    The letter, from SPL secretary Iain Blair, read: “The Board of the Scottish Premier League Ltd considered the application by Dundee United that the outstanding sum due by Rangers to Dundee United of £31,031.20 be offset against the next sums due to Rangers by SPL Ltd, with the offset sum being paid to Dundee United.

    “The board decided to accede the application to Dundee United and accordingly the sum will be withheld from the next sum payable by the SPL Ltd to Rangers, and the sum will be paid by the SPL Ltd to Dundee United.”

    I thought Everton had still to pay the huns a large slice of the Jelavic transfer fee in January 2013.
