Abada released from shackles

176

The story of the season was all there for us to see at a park in Paisley yesterday.  St Mirren dropped deep, they neither wanted not retained the football, yet they somehow managed to get a kick inside the Celtic Penalty area.

That was enough to knock the ball against Greg Taylor’s arm.  The referee missed the incident but from the moment the replays were shown until play eventually broke for a VAR intervention several minutes later, we knew the penalty was in the post.

St Mirren have the secret sauce to stifle Celtic.  It worked when we last visited in September, 80% possession and a 2-0 defeat.  It worked again in the first half, but Charles Dunne’s red card made holding onto the task impossible.  Kyogo pounced on his short pass back, Dunne brought the stirker to the ground, it was a red card and another correct decision to rescind the penalty award, as Dunne released the player inches from the 18-yard line.

It took 11 second half minutes for Celtic to equalise, 11 minutes with Liel Abada on the field. He looked like a player released from shackles, constantly darting back and forth looking for the ball, always looking for the goal.  For me, he starts on Wednesday.

Great to see Matt O’Riley get a goal too.  There is so much to his game already, regular goals is needed to turn him into the finished article.

So far, so good for VAR.  If a player fouls an opponent while attempting to play the ball and concedes a penalty, a yellow, not a red card should be shown.  If, however, the player fouls while making no attempt to play the ball, the card should be red.  Think back to Jeremie Frimpong in the 2019 League Cup Final.

Alex Gogic grabbed Oh’s shirt, the player fell and VAR again called on the referee to review.  It was another stonewaller.  Don’t get me wrong, in no way wanting to punish a team that can actually give us a difficult game when they are already beaten, but Gogic’s offence was a textbook red card that had been reviewed by VAR.  How on earth………

  1. The St Mirren penalty can’t be looked at in isolation. That isn’t the test. The test is whether a Sevco player – doing exactly the same as Taylor – would be similarly penalised. The answer is a resounding no.

Big Goldson, in particular, seems to have handled the ball in the box this season more often than Meadowlark Lemon did in his whole career. Comparative penalty stats don’t lie and cannot be explained by natural variance.

We’ve got about 18 players (including two that have recently departed) who are having fantastic seasons, but CCV for me should be Scotland’s POTY.

  5. What an utterly f’…d up country America is.

With all its global and domestic challenges and with a leader who can hardly even spell his own name never mind tell you how many states there are, yet it still chooses to not allow one of the fittest athletes in the world to play in one of its tennis tournaments. It still denies people who have not been jabbed with discredited and untested jabs access. Zero logic to this.

At least the UK is waking up to the realization that public health messaging was being weaponised, using fear coercion and shame, to control. Incredibly despite zero evidence to support their stance the US still sticks its far oversized ass in the air and head in the sand.

Oh but once there you can go by a gun and defend yourself. You still have that right.

  6. ‘the referee missed the incident’ according to Paul67’s article.

Except he didn’t, as tv replays show he was looking right at it. He didn’t believe it was a penalty. Andrew Dallas wanted a penalty given for reasons we all know. Dickinson knows he’ll be in the lower leagues for a few weeks if he doesn’t follow Dallas’s instruction.

  11. Since the introduction of VAR on the weekend of 21/22 October, respective Celtic/sevco league stats below.

Celtic were awarded 4 penalties and had 6 penalties awarded against them, a net penalty count of -2.

sevco were awarded 6 penalties with 0 against, net count of 6.

This represents an 8 penalty difference between Celtic and sevco, in sevco’s favour of course.

Celtic have benefited from 2 red card awards for their opposition, with 1 red card to Celtic, net of 1.

sevco have seen their opponents receive 4 red cards, with 0 to sevco players, net of 4.

Represents a red card difference of 3, again in sevco’s favour.

For those interested, in any given game under VAR sevco have a 36% chance of being awarded a penalty and a 24% chance of benefiting from an opposition red card. Their chance of conceding a penalty or red card under VAR are, on the available stats, 0%.

I was a tad annoyed on the first half comments on the blog to switch Jota or indeed take him off at HT.

He was motoring all the time, taking up good positions, but when the ball got to him he was pushed, pulled, jostled,

I dont agree with the more effective on the left, i think he is equally effective on both sides, creating much and working hard,

I think ange might have given them all a rocket to stick to his instructions, Jota really enjoyed his goal didnt he.

anyways, he is fit, he starts everytime for me.

onwards to wednesday, eyes on the prize bhoys.

As a wee ps, observing JK and ANGE, they get each other, there was plenty of agreements and head nods,

has he also made John better ? or was JK already good and we just needed an escape goat.

  15. as an aside, and another pre match discussion Johnstone or Ralston.

The difficulty with this, even though they are facts, is that the media narrative and also most fans of most other clubs assume we BOTH get all the decisions, not just the manky Mob. Watch whenever we get a decision, it is highlighted for weeks, even when that decision was correct, at how unfair referees are to whoever is playing against us. As you say I won’t be holding my breath!

Rumblings abounded about him in the pub I watched the game in.

Players with fantastic technique don’t need to be playing well up to the point they turn the game.

Ange knows this and routinely perseveres with him when he looks a bit off it.

    St Stives,

Agreed on Jota but you need to keep in mind, he has set himself a high bar and will obviously get some in the neck when his form drops a bit.

As to AJ & TR I did not think TR should replace AJ and never actually said that at any time but I did and still do think TR needs game time and that can’t happen without AJ being subbed.

  19. Jota is also pretty unique for a Portuguese player in that he doesn’t play act or dive.

If that sweary beastie Buddie on Sunday watched Bruno Fernandes later that afternoon, he could have had a heart attack

  21. A question on refereeing in other team sports.

In the USA who appoints the umpires for NFL and do they have to declate their alligencies ?

and the same for GAA, how are referees goverend and is there any percieved favouritism going on or questioned in the past ?

  22. Canamalar.

If he done that, would he not become ‘illegal'(loathe humans described that way) and be deported? as he has not met any of the vaccine criteria, like Aus.

  23. St Stivs

In GAA at club level, the ref is from the county but not affiliated with either club. Pretty sure most refs are linked to a club in the same way as players.

At county level it is easy as the ref is affiliated to their county ref association so it is easy to make sure they don’t get their own county.

GAA is ridiculously bureaucratic so anyone switching clubs/counties has to go through hoops to do it

I was thinking ( sorry ,Charlie) that I would like to see abig banner at our games highlighting those amazing figures (are they definitely accurate?) but I then thought the GB would need to be the Banner Bearers and I think we know the reception that would get.

Maybe Paul,Mick (of Sentinel Celts) et al (even other teams` fan sites) could connect and spread the message as widely as possible?

For me, listening to other players and coaches, John was always a good training ground coach and still is. He is no better or worse now than then but he is more experienced.

He became an escape goat because a) He was an asst. coach during the disastrous year of 10iar and b) He could not force a decent tune out of that defeated squad when he had the reins for half a dozen matches.

Even if Ange himself was to recommend him as his successor, I doubt he would meet with much favour as he has never managed a team successfully. Scott Brown is doing better at Fleetwood, and Sean Maloney might just save Wigan but I suspect we will look to a foreign coach again after we landed lucky with Ange Who?

No seen too much of Oh yet, but he does seem to fall over rather easily for a big lad. That was a clear penalty but perhaps the reason for the no sending off was because his touch was taking him away from the goal

Agree, I did notice that OH does seem to be knocked over easily, perhaps it’s having to adjust to the physical element of Scottish football for the lad. St.Mirren did a lot persistent fouling moist of which they got away with.

When Kyogo wasn’t firing I was thinking the departed GG was sorely missed to counteract these tactics.

We’ve all seen Jota do some wonderful things on a football pitch but that was a wonder equalising score he produced to start another rampant display by the Hoops against the ten man Saints and a terrific display by Liel Abada off a strong bench. Upwards and onwards .
