Adrenaline pumping as play-offs return

542

We’ve been here several times before.  Our first venture into the Champions League play-off round was in 1998 against (then) Croatia Zagreb.  Zagreb were clearly the better team but while a 1-0 win in the home leg gave us hope we were outclassed in the return game.

The unforgettable tie against Ajax was next.  Celtic’s best away performance in this tournament saw us beat the Dutch champions 1-3 in Amsterdam.  Ajax were clearly caught cold and performed infinitely better at Celtic Park, winning 0-1, but Celtic shut up shop to deny them any real chance of progression.

Basel were unknown and un-fancied in 2002 but their movement in central midfield was too much for Celtic, although curiously they only managed to perform for 45 minutes in each game.  An away goal defeat blocked our route to the top competition.  MTK Budapest were professionally swept aside in 2003.

Who can forget Spartak Moscow?  Just as they had done against Ajax, Celtic did the hard work away in the first leg, returning with a 1-1 draw, but incredible dramas unfolded at Celtic Park.  Roman Pavluchenko levelled Scott McDonald’s opener but the Russian missed a first half penalty.  The game went to extra time and with minutes left a defender punched Scott Brown’s shot off the line.  Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink missed with the resulting spot kick setting up a memorable penalty competition.

Vennegoor of Hesselink and Pavluchenko both scored this time as brave efforts from Gary Caldwell, Derek Riordan and Maciej Zurawski, who almost certainly knew he would never kick another ball for Celtic, and a save by Artur Boruc, sent us through.  Naka proved that 12 yards is too close a dead ball distance for him.

A favourite Celtic Park memory?  You bet.

The adrenaline is pumping already.  Bring it on.

    Please stop talking tripe.

You are talking cash figures – you seem to have missed out inflation.

Adjusted for inflation, public spending is still going up in real terms, you demented turpentine-guzzling cabbage.

In addition you do not seem to understand the difference between DELs and AME.

    You poor, deluded, six-toed man-child.

DELs = Public spending on public service provision.

This is falling and falling heavily in real terms.

AME = Benefits / pensions / interest / the dole.

This is rising both in cash and real terms.

The former is having to be trimmed because of the latter, and because we’re broke. But “falling heavily”? No. Total public spending is going up, and up, and up, heavily, and real terms.

So much for the lies and teenage girl histrionics from the Left about “austerity”.

All that money spent on your education at St ALS and you are only capable of regurgitating the headlines from the Forger’s Gazette.

If only your parents had not been first cousins, or if only they had cared enough about your education to send you into a good school, you might not be embarrassing yourself today with such silly statements. (thumbsup)

  3. Defence is more than the two CBs. My biggest concern for tonight is with our fullbacks. Neither of them have been too effective at getting in crosses, and Izzy looks bereft of confidence.

Sammi will be crucial, as he always is in European games, while if Commons can build on his recent performance he could be a major asset for us.

I agree – mids and forwards to press them high and rattle them like we did to Helsinki. Maybe leave one centre mid sitting deep. Would tell the full backs and CB’s(obviously) to sit back most of the night so no gaps are left. Let the rest loose to press when we don’t have the ball – get it back asap and build from there.

  19. Central midfield need to be on their game tonight. A few times recently I’ve noticed attacks coming straight down the throat of midfield, attackers finding space just outside the box where Ledley/Kayal/Wanyama/Brown should be tracking the man and putting in a tackle.

No idea if this is confusion over responsibility, lack of communication etc, however it’s a general malaise in midfield and easily sorted.

  20. McBhoy

Mulgrew at LB would be a disaster, and I think Neil Lennon knows that by now. He is a must-start at CB. One possibility would be having Ledley at LB. For me, he has been equally effective there as at CM in our European games. His calm footballing brain may be what’s required.

That’s all assuming we go 4 at the back, of course. If we repeat the formation we had at Helsinki, Celtic need to get the balance in midfield correct. The holding player does not need to be a tough tackler like Wanyama. Pirlo plays that position for Italy, passing the ball intelligently and leaving the tackling to the other CMs. I think one of the reasons Vic received his 2 yellows was that he felt surplus to requirements and became too aggressive.

up_over_goal – He has failed to invest sufficiently in new infrastructure projects in order to stimulate economic growth,

Which infrastructure projects has he failed to “invest” in, and how much economic growth have we foregone as a result?

deciding instead to place all his hopes and dreams in private enterprise, which, in a shrinking market at home and in Europe, is folly.

Since all public spending ultimately comes from taxes levied on private enterprise, the effect of more public spending is ultimately to destroy jobs and wealth in the productive sector of the economy. (thumbsup)

asked for the same range you used in your public spending example,

like your making an example of how much the public spending budget has increased,

you identify social security is a substantial part, (I think you know exactly how much is paid to social security but wont press:o), you then bring in pensions, I expect this has been split already, and the pension figure you quote is pensions being paid out to people who have already paid all their dues to the mismanaged (by all parties) pension pot. So I find this gripe particularly nasty fascist vindictivness. Take their pensions off them, they are a drain on society, dont bore me with the fact they worked and paid all their lives to earn respite in their dotage, but naw, philvis want you back out on minimum wage distorting the labour market.

They didn’t seem to quite grasp that I would never sell my shares no matter the financial offer. Can others advise/share their experience. Are they scamming or seriously trying to build a holding? Probably should have asked a few intelligent questions but I am winding myself up for tonight.
