AEK for Celtic or Rosenborg

598

AEK Athens are a far sterner test than Celtic or Rosenborg would want in the Champions League third qualification round.  Last year they despatched Brugge 3-0 on aggregate from the Europa League qualifiers before drawing home and away against AC Milan.  They left the tournament in the first knock out round on the away goals rule to Dynamo Kiev.

On the positive side, they are preseason and the third round will be their first competitive games since May.  Although they are a famous European name, last season was their first domestic title in 24 years, when the interrupted Olympiacos’ domination of football in Greece.

Should we overcome Rosenborg, this would be a big task for Celtic.  AEK will be favourites, no matter who they face.

  1. Fritzsong,

Isn’t 2 the standard ? More than 2 could lead to flooding the playing field, but you could get by with one, although it may lead to an imbalance.

  2. Boaby,

I think what Thomthethim was trying to say is that if , in your business, 2 of your trucks break down – You don’t go out and buy 2 more – as you will have too many trucks when the original trucks get fixed….I think :-)

    Hope you are well mate.

  3. I wouldn’t worry to much if Dembele and Griffiths aren’t fit to play, we have plenty players in the team that can score a goal or two,

There has been many games played without Moussa or the Griff, and we still win, we played without Dembele and Griffiths for about half a season and we still managed to win the double treble, why worry, Celtic will win against the Norwegians if the rest of the team plays up to their ability, if not, we don’t deserve to win the game.

Such an excellent post that I thought one of the three you mentioned must have written it :-)

I was thinking of attempting something of that ilk yesterday but I knew that I could not be both honest and polite in dealing with views which I considered both ignorant and arrogant.

Once again, well done on an excellent post.

  10. Ye olde transfer windae debate…

It’s always interesting and although there is always the case of same olde, Same olde – it is very usually different and tells us a lot about where we are as a Club.

My thots on this one; Neg was absolutely right when he intimated that reviewing and raising the players wages was an overdue game changer… Now some accountants will tell you that you can’t spend money twice (most of these are not pornographers). I know it’s not that simple… but in general if you are spending a lot more money on wages, then you can’t spend the money on transfers.

Now, when Shaun Maloney was leaving I suggested that rather than pay a transfer fee and undoubtedly more wages on a replacement we should pay Shaun a commensurate wage to sign a new contract. For me this was a no brainer… We took the munny and run..;(

Managing the squad by rewarding the performers is the way Brendan prefers to work and to me it’s the correct approach…

Now to my point… this transfer window is complicated. Fholk want to rush out and buy to “plug” perceived holes in our team… maybe their impatience is grounded in the fact we have hugely important Season defining games to play before our Season proper even begins – granted.

My point would be this… this transfer window is in it’s infancy, I’m not too concerned in whose coming in!

My thoughts are – whose leaving.

Now at Celtic as at all Clubs – players come and players go… some we’re glad to see the back off, some we wanted to keep but they went, some we needed to keep but simply couldn’t.

We are in that position now – when the transfer window opened in the summer we had over half a dozen players in the want to keep, need to keep camp – these ghuys were potentially offski.

Stuart Armstrong has already gone… Anyone surprised

    Now some others…

    Moussa

    Simunovic

    Boyata

    Tierney:(((((

…What happens if all of them go?

…What happens if all of them stay?

…What happens if it’s a mixture of the above and then we have (un)expected comings and goings?

Furinstance – …What happens if sparky leaves:?

    This is where we are…

    That’s over £60M+ of transfer unknowns…

Anyone one want to tell me they’re happy to “strengthen” the squad before these unknowns are known? I’m No!

    Hail Hail

    @ AULDHEID on 24TH JULY 2018 11:48 AM

Given that we have spent that kind of money (£2m to £4m to £7m) and it is in the less risky bracket and has allowed qualification, then perhaps the reason we haven’t is that so far we have not found players in that bracket to buy who want to play in Scotland.

Now if we haven’t tried that is something to criticize but we don’t know what efforts are being made and I prefer to hold judgement until I have enough information on which to make it.

I think its this CL qualification period. I hate it, so much money depending on what is a lottery.

It takes the enjoyment out of watching.

What qualifying game was it last year we all watched from behind a couch or took the dog a walk?

  12. JimmyQuinnsBits on

Well… I’ve migrated up to the Peneda-Gerez national park right up the north of Portugal and, as lovely as the place is, I have no chance of watching the game.

Internet at the B&b is mobile only and wouldn’t support a stream. Porto is an hours drive away and I’m not sure I’d find anywhere showing the game – and I couldnt have a swally so its a no go.

happyclappers …. if we win, it is beacause we are the bestest team in the world, with the bestest supporters, and the handsomest manager … and if we lose, it is because the refs a hun, and the bedwetters dont make the players feel supported …

negatonians…. if we lose, its because PL spent all the money on his heated driveway, and if we win, we’re just papering over cracks, and will be cannon fodder in the group stages, if we get there …

Ross Hall’s Uncles’ Cousin’s mate, who used to drink with Granny Coyle and is a taxi driver, was spotted at Barrowfield yesterday. This would seem to add some weight to the rumour that Celtic maybe aren’t no looking to not no probably sign some player… or otherwise. “Either way a decision seems possibly imminent likely-wise”, said Charlie Nicholas.
