AEK for Celtic or Rosenborg

598

AEK Athens are a far sterner test than Celtic or Rosenborg would want in the Champions League third qualification round.  Last year they despatched Brugge 3-0 on aggregate from the Europa League qualifiers before drawing home and away against AC Milan.  They left the tournament in the first knock out round on the away goals rule to Dynamo Kiev.

On the positive side, they are preseason and the third round will be their first competitive games since May.  Although they are a famous European name, last season was their first domestic title in 24 years, when the interrupted Olympiacos’ domination of football in Greece.

Should we overcome Rosenborg, this would be a big task for Celtic.  AEK will be favourites, no matter who they face.

Looks like one or two guid Tims aren’t quite sticking to the script….

    @@@@@

Not really surprised to be honest , always been a game of bluff between our management and board, difference is this time I think the manager is holding all the Aces.

Kenny D it was, sent us to Argentina, thanks Kenny ?…

P.s I was at Anfield that night, my da took me and my mate on a supporters bus full of Rutherglen taxi drivers, telt my maw it was a treat for my 17th birthday…?

  3. Brendan was asked about the McGinn transfer and said he had nothing new to add to that and that it was up to the clubs to make the deal.

This is nothing new as far as I am aware, target identified and given to the board to make the deal or do we think that BR is on the phone to Hibs making the deal himself???

James Forrest is a good tim.

But he is sticking to the script.

    His own script.

JF was of the opinion that it was the suits that prevented MON, WGS and NFL from achieving their aims for the team (and in RD’s case that it was PL and not RD who was conducting all the business- identification of targets as well as negotiating the buying).

Unfortunately for James, all those devious bassas of managers have described their working relationship with the suits, or at least Peter Lawwell, as both good and helpful (Lenny repeated that the other day in our 7iar documentary).

So the track record of people who read words into what has actually been spoken and who discern hidden and coded messages that were not actually spoken by articulate managers, is not very good.

I have never trusted the rhetorical trick of when people try to say :- “What X is really trying to say is……..” and then they usualy furnish their own opinion to fill the gap.

Brendan is an articulate man. He meant to say what he said and no more. He does not need an interpreter

    Aff oot.

Unpopular opinion alert: in order for Celtic to have the merest hope of playing even one less qualifier in the Champions League under the current format, then we need ALL Scottish clubs to get through the group stages of their respective UEFA competitions…even the fudgin’ Sevvies…

I believe Celtic will do the needful…

  9. BR Iis not blaming the Board for the lack of transfers. That is nonsense if you read what he says.He says what anyone with any inkling of sense has been saying.A CH,of the quality some fans are demanding is outwith our reach, financially. You cant have top class, ready made players ready to step in every time someone gets an injury. When he says its not in his hands,he means theres nothing he can do about the transfer prices, wages required.

Its not rocket science, but there are some that want to read into it what they wish. All the nonsense we have been reading on here was shot to pieces by Brendan in that interview.Wont change their fantasy world though. While Brendan lives in the real one.

  10. i'vehadtochangemymind on

I found My Left Foot by Christy brown in oxfam yesterday – really enjoying it – I hadn’t read it first time round ; only remember the ‘Fugg Plato! ‘ comment from the film.

  11. Well well well . Brendan is not in charge of improving the team by signings . The best manager the club have had in many a year ,is being hindered from taking us to another level , by the suits . To be perfectly honest ,it is no surprise to me . If the celtic blog is on the button ,and BR spoke the truth regards BLAME THE BOARD then I will be surprised if he sticks around much longer , and I don’t blame him . Doesn,t half scunner you .

  12. Anyone on saying Moussa,Griff, are injury prone, sick notesand should be punted. No?That must only apply to the usual whipping boys, like Jozo, and “Bomb scare”Dedryck, who funnily enough, play in the positions so many are screaming out to be filled.Another funny thing is if both those players were being sold by other clubs, their combined transfer fees would start around £20 million.Way out of our league.

I commented on moussa missing a lot of game time , and so he does . The past wee while the griff has as well , I never mentioned punting them . But joso FOR ME ANYWAY , could be improved upon , for by that, having an injury prone CH we also have one who can’t/ won’t play on plastic pitches . He is one IMHO I would try and improve upon

After we signed Odsonne,I said I was happy with our front players, and with our midfielders. Not much point in additional signings there.

I pointed out that we were likely to need an additional experienced CH,same for RB,and LB. All as back-up for our preferred incumbents.

KT is our only LB,though we have defenders who can cover across the back otherwise.

I also pointed out,not for the first time, that I reckoned Moussa’s plan for two years and offski was wrecked by persistent injuries, and that LG needed game time to maintain fitness.

    Just saying,like.

He ran into a bunch of locals who were in a band.

They gave him a copy of their No1 album(so they said)

One of the band was wearing hoops on sleeve cover.

Sure sevco fan gave album to one of my mates

that i go to games with.

Band had said they met hoops supporters a few years earlier

that had given them tops and they had supported since.

PS no offence to arty farty band members

  19. I hope Commper isn’t Rafael Shoite! That’s if we ever get to see him in action!!??

Someone should create a poll about either 4m turning CP Into a Pink Floyd concert or using the money to strengthen the defence..

  20. Nothing altered when we engaged Brendan Rodgers as manager in relation to signing players, it’s the same as it is at every major club. Scouts ( we have them ) Managers ( we’v got one ) Finance Control ( we have that too )

Brendan Rodgers has to recommend a player for signing, the finance guys decide how much the club can shell

out, just like record signing Odsonne.

The Celtic manager whoever he is, past or present is never involved in transfer fee figures or details, the financial payments made by Celtic are calculated the way any normal business would operate.

A caviat in this day and age after what has happened in Scotland, should always remember be we are dealing with a ‘biscuit tin’, using real supporters money, earned by Celtic, and we won’t be paying Hibs for example with I. O. U’s or Royal Bank of Scotland loans, that don’t ever ever need repaying.

Rod Petrie ( no friend of Celtic ) but a business man who refused point blank to sell Scott Allen to Sevco regardless of what they said they would pay? The McGinn deal will be done, because Hibs can’t afford to lose X number of millions and compromise will win the day.

However, every transfer window the internet must bash the board as it makes the rebels in them, feel better.

  21. Turkeybhoy

    Jim the Tim.

The following is just a general observation based on your posts not on the rights and wrongs in them because there aren’t any.

Nothing has any meaning except the meaning we give it.

James Forrest has looked at what BR said and gave it his own meaning.

Sometimes I agree with the meaning James gives, sometimes I prefer to put my own meaning and in this case taking all that I think I know (but recognising that is very limited compared to knowing ALL that I and none of us know) I don’t accept the meaning James has given in this instance.

Thinking about what we think and why we think it is difficult because of the speed at which thought emerges, thought that triggers a reaction to what, at the end of the day, turns out to be a meaning that does not stand up to more thoughtful examination.

We all do it. I do and I know that I’m responsible for what I think and no one else that provokes my thinking, but by the simple question of asking oneself why do I think what I just did?, especially if the thought produces negative feelings, has great benefits for our emotional welfare.

Feelings are the sons and daughters of our thinking and we all love our sons and daughters, even if at times we might judge them wrong.

So no rush to judge, go back to square one and think about what caused the judgement.

You don’t get this on Follow Follow. :)

  22. The main question tonight defence wise is can Big Kris handle the experienced but slow Bendtner, they didn’t score against us in two games last year so a repeat of that would be good.

  23. Auldheid,

I think I think I understand what you think about thinking but it is quite difficult to be sure I think what I think I think about what you think.

Maybe it would be easier to adopt the non thinking attitude of some posters, who my wee mum would characterise as, “some people just open their mouth and let their belly rumble”, such is their thoughtlessness!

  26. Lord Bannatyne ordered Collyer Bristow to tell the Court of Session why it doesn’t want the details which brought a legal action which involved it and the liquidators of ‘oldco’ Rangers to an end made public.

The solicitors paid the ‘oldco’ liquidators £24 million in relation to fees they received to the Glasgow team’s takeover by businessman Craig Whyte in 2011.

The lawyers – who acted for Mr Whyte in the takeover – made the payment in an out of court settlement to the liquidators.

The legal practitioners argue that the nature of the settlement should remain confidential.

Their wishes have been expressed in a legal action in which a firm – which incorporates businesses involved in Craig Whyte’s takeover – are suing the ‘oldco’ Rangers for £2.8 million.

However, Lord Bannatyne wants to hear the reasons why Collyer Bristow want to keep the matter secret.

On Tuesday, following a hearing at the Court of Session, Lord Bannatyne ordered Collyer Bristow to instruct Scottish lawyers to make submissions on the matter to him at a future hearing.

He said: “It would be better to hear from Collyer Bristow solicitors. I am going to direct to them to appear before me and I will continue the case.”

Collyer Bristow’s wish for the agreement to remain secret emerged during a hearing at the Edinburgh court on Tuesday.

Their concerns were heard during a procedural case involving Rangers FC Group Ltd and RFC 2012 PLC.

Rangers Group is suing RFC 2012 – the liquidators of ‘oldco’ Rangers for £2.8 million.

Rangers FC Group Ltd is the name given to companies which were previously involved with ‘oldco’ Rangers.

It includes Wavetower, the company which Mr Whyte used to acquire Rangers, and Sevco 5088. The latter was the name given to the company which was used by the club’s former Chief Executive to buy the ‘Gers from Mr Whyte.

Rangers Group Ltd is currently controlled by a specialist London based business called Henderson & Jones. This company specialises in buying legal claims from other businesses and pursuing them through the courts.

Rangers Group wants the information because it believes it would help them assist their current action against the liquidators of Rangers.

It wants judges at the court to review a decision made by the liquidators – RFC 2012 PLC.

Rangers Group believes RFC 2012 PLC owes it cash because it is a creditor of the now defunct business.

However, RFC 2012 has refused to give Rangers Group any cash because it believes that it isn’t legally entitled to any money.

RFC 2012 have based their refusal to hand over the cash because it believes there was alleged illegality on the part of Wavetower and Sevco in their dealings with Oldco Rangers.

At a hearing last month Rangers Group’s advocate Douglas Fairley QC told Lord Bannatyne that it was important for his clients to know the details of the settlement of a legal action involving Collyer Bristow and the liquidators.

The judge agreed and allowed the settlement document to be placed before the court in a sealed envelope marked confidential.

The court would then legal arguments about whether the envelope should be opened and details of the settlement be made public.

On Tuesday, Mr Fairley said he knew that Collyer Bristow paid the liquidators £24 million. But he said he didn’t know what the exact nature of the agreement constituted.

He urged the court to make an order to open the envelope containing the settlement agreement.

Mr Fairley added: “We know that the settlement was for £24 million. But what we don’t know is what that £24 million was paid for.”

Mr Fairley told the court that it was important for his clients to know the settlement was for.

Advocate Roddy Dunlop QC, who was acting for RFC 2012, said his clients were content for the settlement agreement to be made public.

However, he said that he knew that Collyer Bristow didn’t want the settlement to be made public.

Mr Dunlop added: “The position is that the respondents do waive any privilege and confidentiality that they currently enjoy in this settlement.

“However, it is a bipartite agreement and Collyer Bristow have not waived their rights in this case.”

Lord Bannatyne concluded that he couldn’t make any ruling until he had heard legal submissions from Collyer Bristow about why they want the settlement agreement to remain confidential.

The case will next call in the near future.

  27. Auldheid thank you for your reply . May I just say .its jimtim. Not jim the Tim . Don’t want to get the guy lumbered with my post.

  28. The hands cant hit what the eyes cant see on

People can speculate as to Brenda’s feelings on the transfer front but me made the below quote about a month ago. You can infer from the quote and the subsequent (in)action on the transfer front that he surely frustrated to a degree. Also, the quote was preceded by Brendan discussing Edouard signing, so it is evident that he believes these signings have to be made in addition to Edouard.

“We know we need to strengthen.

We lost Stuart Armstrong and Patrick Roberts who were really influential players for us in all the years I have been here. We need to at least replace that and if we can also add to the squad.” Brendan Rodgers, 29/06/18.

  29. I noticed from Brendan’s presser the sevc hacks asked about Mikael Lustig’s availability which was quickly put to bed as it was too early in PC’s return, but such is their in depth knowledge they forgot about another of Celtic’s world cup full back participants.

Watch this space as ‘the mole’ reckons we won’t risk 3 at the back in a European game.

  30. Ignorant and stupid….

ach I’ve been called worse names…

I’m sure you got lots of hits on the walking billboard of a site of yours so everyone is happy, including your good self….

It’s hot way down south csc

  31. One last thing.

I don’t invent stuff. The manager has said as clearly as he can that he does not know what is going on with signings. This is a fact. I didn’t invent it. He has told the club what he needs, he has said this to the media over and over again. He wants those who have left replaced and a couple of new players on top of that.

This nonsense some of you are talking about us having to be careful, and only wanting quality additions at the right price … excuse me for raining on your parade a wee bit, but if that was true we wouldn’t be looking at John McGinn, who I’m a big fan of, but who is only potential at the moment. He is not a “next level” footballer, far from it.

The most important guy at a football club is the one in the dugout. Brendan Rodgers has gone out of his way to inform the Celtic fans that as far as transfer negotiations go it’s out of his hands. He has no idea whether deals are progressing or not, and that suggests a lack of communication as much as anything else. Does that usually translate into good news?

How many of you work in major companies? Communication is everything, otherwise one department doesn’t know what the other department is doing.

You don’t even HAVE to read between the lines to know there’s a problem here and I am not surprised to find people on here who just don’t want to see it.
