An elite individual talent at work

140

Winning as comfortably as Celtic are these days, it is easy to forget those times when we struggle to breakdown packed defences.  This has been a feature of Celtic games for as long as I’ve been watching.  We have always and will always come up against teams who will put 10 men behind the ball and seldom leave their final third.

In most games we will move the ball around quickly enough for cracks to open up.  The same is true for our main title rivals.  Often, the league is won and lost on how well the contenders are able to overcome a packed defence that sticks to task.

Leagues are won by players and actions that set the champions apart.  In this particular area, David Turnbull excels.  His technique when shooting from outside the box is exceptional.  In less than a combined 90 minute action against packed defences in recent weeks, he has scored three times from outside the area.

Low shots, hard and bullet fast, this is not about how Celtic move the ball or their ability to create space, it is an elite individual talent at work.  When we are comfortably ahead of St Mirren, Morton or St Johnstone, this is of little consequence, but when struggling to make the breakthrough, David Turnbull is an outstanding asset.

He is still only 23, lots of road ahead. Talk of a new contract is not premature.

I think its more likely that it has something to do with Brexit and the application of EU law. The timing of the new Judicial panel would suggest it.

    But I dont know.

  2. Saint Stivs from last article.

Great read about Everton’s new stadium . It seems focused on enhancing the match day experience for fans and sensible environmental responsibility.

Liverpool has a good intregated public transport system but Everton are still putting on shuttle buses from main line stations.

This is something we have discussed on here many times. We really need a transport solution that puts people first. I thought Dominic Mckay was going to run with this as well as other imaginative schemes.

This needs to be addressed sooner rather than later. Taking private cars to the game will become harder and frowned upon. More restrictions and deincentive will be put in place.

Taking the car to the game will eventually not be a feasible option.

The Ulez zone coming into effect from the 1st June will eventually be extended to cover the whole of the city, Many older buses, taxis and cars will be forced off the road. Taxi fares are rising by 19% in Glasgow which will impact on usage.

To do nothing is not an option, we need to plan now and urgently discuss options with GCC.

This will not go away. Times and attitudes will force this.

Heartbreaking the sad scenes in Turkey and Syria.

One crumb of comfort is the offers of assistance from so many countries of all shades and opinion.

It just goes to show how well Celtic are playing when a player like Turnbull can’t get into the starting line up , he would waltz into any other team in Scotland and even the Championship in England. It must be a difficult task for Ange trying to keep all the Bhoys happy.

  5. I wouldn’t moan too much about the pitch in Perth, they may take the huff and go down the Kilmarnock/ Livingston option.

I unsedstood that CAS applies the sporting rules as opposed to civil legal laws.

I’m obviously mistaken then. However, I’m pretty sure laws on fraud are not different in UK from Europe but I do expect the UK want their cut and control over corruption. Irrespective of investigation in UK, the issue would have aslo impacted Champions League so I expect UEFA would be within their rights to open their own investigation, after all if the yanks can investigate Swiss based FIFA and UEFA then anyone can claim to have jurisdiction, no?

I think the fear is that he could probably get better money and more game time in those alternatives.

Oh and Ange was pretty clear, keeping players happy is not his problem, players keeping him happy is how it is and should be, I love that attitude.

the website itself and the explanation of design, build, sustainability and time line is brilliant.

the fan engagement in the process is excellent. ironic given what goes on on the park.

I know i torment TB163 about repetative questions over Barrowfield, Lennoxtonw, museum, hotel etc etc,

but there is a lesson to be learned for Celtic plc about fan engagement, simply fans want to know everything that goes on, brick by brick. and why not.

Uefa already did investigate and punish City for these exact breaches, City appealed to CAS and won.

Is the current issue based on new information coming to light?

  11. Go tell the Spartim on

Leeds sack another boss, the need for success immediately and of course the resultant cash that comes with it, further fuels the English’ greed and need to replicate the days of the empire via football.

i often think that Tebas’ continually attacks on Man City and PSG, maybe fueled by more sinister things other than their wealth. FFP is and always will be a con, but anyone guilty under those “weak” rules should have their a*se handed to them.

  12. A pure random for the quizzers – no googling mind. Brought up today by my colleagues in USA who visited a tenuos celtic linked person and events from the early years.

Celtics record defeat is 8-0 loss to Dumbarton in a friendly on 1st January 1892 at Celtic Park.

Who kicked the game off ?

Its the result of four year investigation, most probably based on the same leaked info Uefa had. The charges are the same

  14. I´m not looking for any debate on this, I just want to state a point.

It could be called political but it´s not party political.

    Lossiemouth-born James Ramsay McDonald ( 1866 – 1937 ) on Anglification

1921, Ramsay MacDonald, Socialism: critical and constructive:

“The Anglification of Scotland has been proceeding apace to the damage of its education, its music, its literature, its genius, and the generation that is growing up under this influence is uprooted from its past, and, being deprived of the inspiration of its nationality, is also deprived of its communal sense.”

100 years later. Where would Scotland be today if Celtic hadn´t been around?

God would needed to have invented them?

James Ramsay McDonald was British Prime Minister on two occasions. Good or bad? You find out and decide. But find out about ALL the man´s life, especially before the first world war.

Some good news the other week for the folks on The Fair Isle at least. I was just reading about “El Gran Grifon”, the Spanish ship that came aground there in September 1588. It is said the spanish sailors showed the local folk how to use the colours from the flowers for dye and use it to colour their wool.

I would suggest a greater concern is the americanisation of UK & Europe.

  16. I like DT at the SPFL level, but elite he ain’t.

His ability to score goals from outside the box is only highlighted due to the paucity of such goals from Hatate, McGregor and O’Riley in particular.

To play the way we do and compete in Europe (the true elite level) we need more pace and athletism in there, not more Turnbulls.

Our elite players are CCV, McGregor, Jota, Hatate and Kyogo.

Since the Sevco game the number of folk voicing their MOTM opinions has been relatively steady – 74, 70, 62, 68, 69, 69, 65. Celtic FC are delighted to announce the contract extension of Celtic FC B team player, Bruno Davidson. After putting pen to paper, the young midfielder has commited his future to the club until summer 2025.

Joining the youth set-up in 2020, Davidson has made his mark on Darren O’Dea and Stephen McManus’ side this season, playing an important role in the team’s performances across the Lowland League, UEFA Youth League and Premier League International Cup.

Speaking on his new contract, Davidson said: “I’m delighted to extend my stay here. I definitely feel like it’s the right place to continue my development and grow as a player.

“I’m ready to continue working as hard as I have been and hopefully kick-on even more.”

Everyone at the club congratulates Bruno on his new contract and looks forward to seeing him progress in the Hoops.

To avoid any confusion about MacDonald’s views it’s worth pointing out that a few lines later he makes it clear he’s calling for devolution.

When Bruno Davidson was a 15 year-old playing for Hutchison Vale in the Edinburgh Youth League, he was being pursued by a plethora of EPL clubs, eventually opting to join Celtic when he turned 16.

cue for someone to come on with a list of headed goals.

Main thing is we are scoring for fun, long may it last.

  24. ERNIE LYNCH .

Apols Ernie for the late reply , I’m sure mister Gerrards ego would want the titles stripped in England and get his league medal and somehow offer an excuse as to why Rangers titles shouldn’t be …..

No doubt VAR would jump in to assist the manky mob …..
